Not all heart attacks begin with the sudden, crushing chest pain.
One-third of the patients who had heart attacks had no chest pain. These patients were more likely to be older, female, or diabetic.

The symptoms of a heart attack can vary from person to person. Some people can have few symptoms and are surprised to learn they've had a heart attack.

    Most common symptoms

Chest pain or discomfort. Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center or left side of the chest. The discomfort usually lasts for more than a few minutes or goes away and comes back. It can feel like pressure, squeezing, fullness, or pain. It also can feel like heartburn or indigestion. The feeling can be mild or severe.

Upper body discomfort. You may feel pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, shoulders, neck, jaw, or upper part of the stomach (above the belly button).

Shortness of breath. This may be your only symptom, or it may occur before or along with chest pain or discomfort. It can occur when you are resting or doing a little bit of physical activity.

Breaking out in a cold sweat.

Feeling unusually tired for no reason, sometimes for days (especially in women)

Nausea (feeling sick to the stomach) and vomiting.

Light-headedness or sudden dizziness or fainting.

Coughing starts when part of breathing passage is inflamed, or is irritated by dust, smoke, mucus, foreign body etc.

    1) dry cough - generally occurs due to nose and throat infection most cases due to virus. It is dry, hacking, tickly in nature. Sounds like somebody is clearing throat.

    2) wet cough- associated with production of sputum and rattling sound of chest. Also called chesty cough. Common causes are bronchitis, copd, pneumonia.

    3) croup- associated with an inspiratory sound after each episode of cough. Generally in children. Occurs due to swelling of vocal chords due to viral etiology.

    4) whooping cough- associated with difficulty in breathing due to prolonged coughing and an inspiratory whoop due to gasping for air after a bout of cough. Can be prevented by vaccination. So not seen in vaccinated people.

A dry cough disturbing sleep and irritating the patient needs to be treated

    1. Fluids may help thin secretions and soothe an irritated throat.
    2. Dry, hacking coughs respond to honey in hot water, tea, or lemon juice.
    3. Elevate your head with extra pillows at night to ease a dry cough.
    4. Try a cough drop to soothe an irritated throat.
    5. Antitussive like dextromethorphan and codeine may be needed.
