    Growth hormone or somatropin is responsible for cell growth as well as reproduction. But insufficient somatropin production by the pituitary gland may result in lack in height. It is mostly caused by a serious brain injury, any prevalent medical condition or might occur as a birth defect.

    1. Congenital ghd - this form of ghd appears from at the time of birth itself.
    2. Acquired ghd- ghd can be acquired during later life as a result of trauma, infection, tumor growth within the brain or radiation therapy.
    3. Idiopathic ghd- idiopathic ghd is the third, and comparatively worst kind of ghd since it has no treatment.

    Ghd is mostly permanent, but can also be transient. Read on to know how to detect whether you or your child is suffering from growth hormone deficiency (ghd).

    Childhood onset
    1. Restricted height- compared to other children of your child's age, he/she may be of shorter height, which is a rather conclusive sign to detect somatropin deficiency.
    2. Chubby and comparatively younger appearance- your child may have a proportionate body, but if he/she is unnaturally chubby and has a baby-face compared to other children, he/she may be suffering from ghd.
    3. Late puberty- your child's puberty maybe later than usual or even not appear at all, depending upon the gravity of the ghd.
    4. Hypoglycemia and exaggerated jaundice- low blood sugar is amongst the most primary manifestations of ghd, along with extended duration of jaundice.
    5. Micro-penis- micro penis condition is one of the incident signs of ghd, which later escalates to growth deficit as the infant gets older.

    Adult onset
    1. Fatigue- adults with ghd may experience extreme tiredness throughout the day, with reduced muscle strength.
    2. Osteoporosis- osteoporosis, along with bodily deformities, is a common sign in adults with ghd.
    3. Lipid abnormalities- a test of your lipid profile may reveal abnormalities in ldl cholesterol, insulin resistance, and impaired cardiac functions.

    Tests to determine ghd
    1. Physical test- a chart is drawn to determine the proportion of height and weight with respect to your age to detect anomalies.
    2. Hand x-ray- a hand x-ray can determine whether the age of bones are at par with your age.
    3. Mri-mri scan can determine the health of your brain and pituitary gland.
    4. Test for other hormones- growth hormone may not be solely responsible for your health condition, so it is important to determine if other hormone levels are all normal.

    1. Hormone supplements- hormone supplements like corticosteroids (hydrocortisone or prednisone), levothyroxine (levoxyl, synthroid, etc), and others work to replenish the deficiency of pituitary hormones.

These organs maintain the chemical balance of the body by secreting hormones which regulate all the body systems.

    Diabetes is the name for a group of diseases which are characterized by abnormalities in the absorption of glucose and blood sugar levels.

    Relation between the endocrine system and diabetes:

    The hormone insulin is secreted by the pancreatic beta cells called the islets of Langerhans. It is a peptide hormone that metabolizes carbohydrates, proteins and fats, stimulates the conversion of glycogen or stored protein to usable glucose and also helps the body cells to absorb the glucose. The movement of ionized or free calcium (Ca2+) is also somewhat dependent on insulin.
    Insulin is secreted from the pancreas in two phases - the first phase occurs when blood sugar level is high and need to be absorbed into the cells while the second phase is associated with a slower production not influenced by blood sugar.

    Types of diabetes and how they are affected by the endocrine system

    1. Type 1 diabetes mellitus: This condition is caused by underproduction of insulin by the pancreatic beta cells. It is called 'insulin dependent diabetes mellitus' (IDDM), since it is directly influenced by the hormone.

    2. Type 2 diabetes mellitus: This type of the disorder is not directly dependent on insulin. It is usually caused by obesity and lack of physical exercise. The cells develop resistance to insulin and because of that blood sugar is not absorbed properly. This eventually leads to under-secretion of insulin.

    3. Gestational diabetes mellitus: Pregnant women might develop high levels of blood sugar even if they did not have diabetes in the past. This occurs due the changes in the regular hormonal cycles and secretion of pregnancy hormones and can result is complications and miscarriage.

    Sub-specialties of diabetic endocrinology

    1. Diabetic renal disease: The kidneys filter the blood. If there are chronically high levels of sugar in blood, hormones like erythropoietin (regulates production of red blood cells) and renin (regulates blood plasma and fluid content) are not produced. As a result, the kidneys' capacity is reduced and waste materials build up in blood.

    2. Diabetic vision problems: Insulin problems may cause the blood vessels supplying the retina (light sensitive eye tissue) to expand or contract. This causes blurry and distorted vision and pain in the eyes.

    Does Hormonal Imbalance Hint the Risk of Diabetes?

    Hormones are chemical substances that regulate a vast range of important functions in the body. They are secreted by various glands and organs and can affect important body functions like growth, immunity, blood pressure and glucose levels among several others. Several disorders can arise due to an imbalance of your hormones, particularly diabetes.

    Diabetes is a metabolic disorder, which is mostly chronic or long lasting in nature. It interferes with the body's ability to use glucose and chiefly pertains to the hormone called insulin, although other hormones can also be related.

    Any imbalance in the following hormones can lead to diabetes:

    1. Insulin

    Insulin is a hormone, which is secreted by the pancreas. Diabetes can occur when this hormone is not secreted in adequate amounts or in when it is used inefficiently. During digestion, food gets broken down to glucose, which provides energy to the body. Insulin facilitates the function of moving the glucose from the bloodstream to the cells. In the case of diabetes, the glucose remains in the bloodstream due to insulin issues.

    2. Cortisol

    The adrenal gland is responsible for producing the hormone cortisol, which regulates blood pressure, stress and glucose production. The production of cortisol is controlled by another hormone called ACTH, which is secreted by the pituitary gland in the brain. Excess quantities of glucose in the body disrupt the function of insulin and trigger the liver to produce glucose, thereby leading to diabetes.

    3. Growth hormone

    The pituitary gland is responsible for producing certain hormones including the growth hormone. Growth and development of the muscles, bones and other organs of the body fall within the functions of the growth hormone. Overproduction of this hormone can lead to a disease called acromegaly in adults. Excess secretion leads to increase in the glucose levels in the blood, which can subsequently cause diabetes.

    Many fruits are rich in micronutrients, essential vitamins, fibre content and antioxidants along with that fruits occupy more space and less in calories so makes your tummy full and gives you feeling of satiety or fullness.

    Most of the fruits have high fiber content , it comes in soluble or insoluble form. both forms are indigestible. They forms a bulk & increase water content of stool making it softer and easily movable in Gastrointestinal tract. High fiber diet reduces cardiovascular morbidity & mortality.

    Diabetic person should avoid eating fruits with high glycemic index i.e. those fruits which readily digest in stomach and raises your blood sugars more than others like Mango, Chikoo, Banana (Green), Grapes, Custard Apple, etc.

    Also one should avoid drinking fruit juices as condensation process increases sugar content of juice as well as a glass of juice is roughly equivalent to eating 2-3 fruits at a time. It is always better to eat a fresh fruit instead of drinking a fruit juice added with or without preservatives.

    Managing blood sugars by diabetic person is all about balancing food intake. For example suppose Person (A) who is diabetic had four bread slices at breakfast at 9.00 AM and his blood sugars measured at 11.00 AM found out to be 300 mg/dl. If the same person (A) divides those breakfast into 2 halves and take 2 bread slices at 8.00 AM and 2 bread slices at 10.00 AM then his blood sugar roughly remains around 130 mg/dl. In this example the food intake is not decreased but instead it is divided into small quantity and consumed frequently.

    Normally we consume most of the meal in the first 20 mins of starting a meal so eating a fruit before meal delays food intake and gives feeling of fullness or satiety earlier. That eventually leads to consumption of less food at meal so less calorie intake and helps to loose weight.

    Many colorful fruits like berries are rich in antioxidants ( Lycopen, Beta-carotene, etc.) . In diabetes high blood sugar values causes damage to nerves, retina, blood vessels and other systems via specific pathways. One of them is through generating free oxygen radical species, these anti-oxidants reacts with such harmful oxygen radicals and scavenger them thus minimizes the tissue damage in diabetes.

    What fruits to eat in diabetes ?

    Blueberries, blackberries, strawberries etc. all berries are rich in antioxidants, vitamins and low in carbohydrates.
    Peaches are rich in vitamin A & C , Potassium and fiber.
    Apple a day keeps doctor away. Apples are rich in fiber, vitamin C & low in carb. don’t peel the skin as it contains antioxidants.
    Oranges are great in vitamin C, low in carb, contains potassium and folate, other citrus fruits like grapefruits are also equally good to eat.

    The new device called the tadpole endoscope (te) takes inspiration from the mechanics that tadpoles use to swim and is like a micro-robot fish with a camera which is swallowed by the patient.

    The tadpole endoscope stands out from existing wireless capsule endoscopes with its addition of a soft tail that allows it to be guided around the stomach remotely by a doctor, allowing for more comprehensive imaging and accurate location of problems within the body.

    Cancers of the gastrointestinal (gi) tract, including esophagus cancer, stomach cancer and colon cancer, rank as the second most prevalent among all types of cancers in the world.

    Three procedures are required for the traditional method of diagnosing cancers in the gi tract: esophagus cancer and stomach cancer can be diagnosed using gastroscopy; intestinal cancer can be diagnosed using capsule endoscopy; and colorectal cancer can be diagnosed using colonoscopy. All of these diagnostic procedures are expensive and put a lot of stress on the human body.

    Created by engineers from the institute of precision engineering at the chinese university of hong kong, the te attempts to improve these existing methods by offering a reliable, non-invasive diagnosis procedure for the gi tract.

    The process will work by the patient going to the hospital and swallowing the te which starts working immediately. Once the te is in the stomach, the doctor can control the te to swim around to gather images. By adjusting the posture of the patient, the doctor can view the whole stomach.

    The te will then move into the lower gi tract depending on natural peristalsis. The patient can then be sent home wearing a sensor pad to record these images which the doctor can subsequently use to make a diagnosis.

    So far, the te has been tested in a stomach model and a pig stomach without the image system. The authors hope that the viability of the propulsion model will take one step closer to the next stage of experiments before the device can be used in a working medical context. The research was published in the journal hkie transactions.

    Diabetes more than doubles the risk of developing Parkinson's disease while metformin therapy protects against that risk, according to research published in the publication Parkinsonism and Related Disorders.

    Parkinson's disease is a disorder of the brain that leads to tremors and difficulty with walking, movement and coordination. It most often develops in people age 50 or older and is one of the most common nervous system disorders of the elderly, according to the National Institutes of Health. There is no known cure.

    The major 12-year study in Taiwan found that while diabetes increases the risk of Parkinson's 2.2 fold, including metformin in the therapy negates that risk.

    “An exciting aspect of the finding is that metformin seems to be working to protect the brain against neurodegeneration which contributes to Parkinsonism. This means it may also be considered a relevant therapy for the prevention of dementia as well,” said Mark Wahlqvist, professor at the National Health Research Institutes in Taiwan and lead author of the study.

    Metformin is the first-line medication for patients with type 2 diabetes. This affordable and commonly prescribed oral drug lowers blood glucose levels by decreasing the amount of glucose produced by the liver and enhancing insulin action. It's a type of biguanide drug used since the 1950s with a relatively safe record.

    Researchers also found that use of sulfonylurea drugs, a common treatment for diabetes, further increases the risk by about 57 percent.

    Sylfonylureas are a category of oral medications that stimulate the beta cells of the pancreas to release more insulin, according to the American Diabetes Association. Sylfonylurea drugs have been in use since the 1950s and include glipizide, glyburide, glimepiride and chlorpropamide.

    Researchers theorize that metformin may re-set the regulation of energy metabolism in the brain cells. They suspect that exercise and diet may have the same energy regulating effect.

    The study does not examine the mechanism behind metformin's protective effect on the brain. Researchers say that additional research is needed in this area.

    Past research has shown that metformin reduces cardiovascular mortality and several cancers, including those of the large bowel, liver and pancreas.

    Diabetes causes vascular damage throughout the body. Because the blood vessels within the eye are so tiny, any damage at all can have a tremendous impact on eye health.

    One of the most prevalent of the diabetes-related eye diseases is glaucoma. In fact, people with diabetes are between 40% and 50% more likely to develop glaucoma than non-diabetics.

    Glaucoma causes the pressure within the eye to increase gradually, damaging the optic nerve and leading to partial or complete vision loss. The exact mechanisms for this are unknown. While there are several types of glaucoma, the most common form is open-angle glaucoma.
    Open-angle glaucoma

    The eye is full of fluid which continually refreshes. Normally, fluid drains at a point in the eye where the iris and the cornea meet. If this opening becomes even partially blocked the fluid drains out of the eye too slowly, even as new fluid is added. This backup of fluid causes an increase in pressure within the eye, damaging the optic nerve.

    Open-angle glaucoma does not cause any symptoms until the disease is well-advanced. By that time, vision is impacted, with loss of peripheral vision first, advancing to tunnel vision and then total vision loss as the disease progresses.

    The goal of treatment is to lower intraocular pressure. This can be approached one of three ways: lower eye pressure, improve drainage of fluid from the eye or decrease the volume of fluid produced within the eye.

    There are a variety of eye drops that may be prescribed.

    Prostaglandins (xalatan, lumigan) and cholingeric agents (isopto carbine and isopto carbachol) act to increase outflow of fluid from within the eye.

    Beta blockers (betimol, timoptic, betoptic) and carbonic anhydrase inhibitors (trusopt, azopt) reduce the production of fluid within the eye.

    Alpha-adrenergic agonists (iopidine, alphagan) both lessen fluid production and increase fluid outflow.

    Physicians may prescribe a combination of the above.

    Oral medications may also be prescribed, if eye drops alone are not sufficient. These are usually in the form of a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor.

    If medications are not sufficient to halt progression of the disease, then surgery might be necessary.

    Drainage implants might be inserted within the eyes to facilitate drainage.

    Laser surgery, known as laser trabeculoplasty, can be done to open clogged drainage canals.

    Filtering surgery, known as trabeculectomy, removes a small piece of tissue from the location of the drainage canals, widening the opening and improving drainage.

    The best possible treatment for glaucoma is prevention. Everyone above 40 years of age should have an eye exam at least every three years. Diabetics should have a dilated examination of their eyes annually.

    Well-controlled blood sugar level are another preventive measure that will lessen the odds of developing glaucoma.

    Scabies is an itchy skin condition caused by the microscopic mite sarcoptes scabies. It is common all over the world, and can affect anyone. Scabies spreads quickly in crowded conditions where there is frequent skin-to-skin contact between people. Hospitals, child-care centers, and nursing homes are examples. Scabies can easily infect sex partners and other household members. Sharing clothes, towels, and bedding can sometimes spread scabies. This can happen much more easily when the infested person has crusted scabies. You cannot get scabies from a pet. Pets get a different mite infection called mange.

    Symptoms are
    Pimple-like irritations or a rash
    Intense itching, especially at night
    Sores caused by scratching
    The infected person's clothes, bedding and towels should be washed in hot water and dried in a hot dryer. Treatment is also recommended for household members and sexual partners. Several lotions are available to treat scabies.

    Tachycardia means a rapid heart rate of more than 100 beats per minute. Supraventricular means the problem starts in the upper part of your heart, above your ventricles (the lower chambers of your heart). If you have SVT, your heart may beat at a rate of about 140 to 250 beats per minute.

    SVT episodes usually don't last long and go away on their own without any treatment. They often happen in young, healthy people. You will usually get fewer episodes of SVT as you get older, but you may find that the symptoms get worse. How long an episode lasts can vary from a few seconds or minutes, to several hours.

    Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) doesn't always cause symptoms but you’re more likely to have symptoms if you already have heart disease.
    Symptoms you may get during an episode of SVT include:
    being aware of your heart suddenly beating faster (heart palpitations)
    feeling dizzy
    feeling short of breath
    chest pain
    These symptoms may be caused by problems other than SVT.
    You may need to have a test called an ECG. An ECG records the electrical activity in your heart to see how well it's working. 
    ECHO - This test uses ultrasound to provide a clear image of your heart muscles and valves and can show how well your heart is working. 
    you can take antiarrhythmic medicines by doctor.
    These include beta-blockers, calcium-channel blockers and antiarrhythmic medicines. You can also take them to prevent further SVT episodes.

    Are dark cracks behind neck a sign of diabetes?

    Many overweight and obese people have darkened and a rather flaky texture behind neck, darkening in armpits and other parts of body with creases and folds like elbows, knees or knuckles. This is commonly mistaken as smudge of dirt, uncleanliness or lack of hygiene. Some people think that it is due to repeated friction caused by necklace or chains etc. In fact it is a sign of'diabetes' which is already developed or might develop in future.

    This darkening is due to excessive cell growth and differentiation of fibroblasts caused by excess of insulin in the body especially in obese individuals and type 2 diabetes patients.

    In obese individuals and type 2 diabetes patients excess amount of fat especially abdominal fat (tummy fat) causes resistance to action of insulin secreted by pancreas and tends to hamper its action. In return, body produces more and more insulin from pancreas to keep blood sugar under control. This excess amount of insulin secreted by body promotes this skin cell growth leading to the visible condition called'acanthosis nigricans' in medical terms.

    After producing excess amount of insulin pancreas start exhausting, this converts into diabetes. At this stage diabetes can be prevented by simple lifestyle modifications & focussed weight loss.
