Children cough when the lining of the windpipe becomes irritated. This happens when a child is sick or when the body is fighting off an illness and making lots of mucus or phlegm. Coughing is a normal symptom of a respiratory infection, but it may be caused by other respiratory diseases.

Paediatricians may look out for symptoms of cold or flu. They may listen to the child’s lungs for detecting whooshing sound. For confirmation of diagnosis, the following tests may be ordered for:
• Chest X-ray
• Lung Function tests
• Blood tests
HOW IS COUGH IN CHILDREN TREATED?
The pediatric expert would provide a cough syrup to your child only if they are older than a year. In infants, cough syrups are usually avoided. They may suggest home remedies and give an antibiotic in extreme cases.
