Cholera is a bacterial disease usually spread through contaminated water. Cholera causes severe diarrhea and dehydration. In ignored cases cholera can be fatal in a matter of hours, even in previously healthy people. Signs and symptoms include:
• Rapid heart rate
• Loss of skin elasticity (the ability to return to original position quickly if pinched)
• Dry mucous membranes, including the inside of the mouth, throat, nose, and eyelids
• Low blood pressure
• Muscle cramps

A stool sample can help in diagnosing the condition. A general physiciancan even identify cholera by a complete physical examination.
HOW IS CHOLERA TREATED?
The best way to stay clear from cholera is to prevent it by consuming safe water and food. Also ensure that you use only safe water for brushing, cooking, washing etc. If you get cholera, you should seek immediate help in order to avoid dehydration. Staying hydrated is the mainstay of treatment. Oral or intravenous fluids may be given depending on the severity of cholera. Antibiotics may be given to kill the bacteria and bring down the duration of the disease
