Keep your leg raised while sitting or lying Quadriceps strengthening exercises- Quad Clenches: Lie flat on your back or sit upright on a chair with leg kept horizontally on another surface. I am 23 years old male. I have knee pain since 2 yrs. I go to gym regularly. I have visited some doctors. One said there is swelling in the cartilage and don't do squats in gym. I don't do that but there is no relief in pain. I feel this pain only during running and using stairs. Rest of the time I don't feel pain in normal movement of the joint. But that motion of the joint is not smooth. I feel some crackling sound in my knees. I do exercises to strengthen the quadriceps but nothing happened. Is there any damaged in the cartilage due my high and frequent sports activities. I feel pain in both knees.

Dear lybrate-user, you appear to have damage in the cartilage of the knee cap portion of the knee joint. It is advised that you do not continue doing squats/ climb stairs, etc. However if these precautions are not improving your symptoms then you nee to get the consultation of a sports surgeon to assess the degree and size of the cartilage injury in your knee joint. Superficial and small cartilage damages can be managed completely with physical rehabilitation. However large or deep lesions would need stem cell treatment techniques to repair the damage. Hope that helps you, you are free to contact me if needed. Regards,

Thanks for the query. From the complaints you had described it could be stress to the muscles of the neck. I would like you to maintain roper posture at your work place. Start on some neck stretching and strengthening exercises. If the pain is not settling then consult your local orthopedician and get opinion,

Dear lybrate-user Check if you have been sleeping on uneven bed that causes strain in neck, shoulder abd back. This kind of strain can put pressure on the nerves reaching out to the arms and chest where the pressure must be causing tingling sensation. You have to make sure your overall health improves with the correct kind of foods, some basic ayurvedic tonics and adequate exercise/rest to develop a healthy body. Regards.

I am 36 years old male suffering with hypermobility of joints. It was diagnosed 2 years ago with stiffness and pain in lower back and sacroiliac joints. My joints are very weak and get hurt easily since my childhood. Its been more than a month that I took stairs to office for a week instead of lift. I used to climb 15 floors without lift. My knees started paining and then I stopped doing it. Now my knees are swollen and they are not getting better even after icing or using hot water bottle. All the tests in the past were negative. The tests done were RA Factor, HLAB27, BL17, CRP, cbc, MRI and complete spine screening and Bone scan of lower back. My lower back is fine now but I have swelling in my knees and pain in left shoulder and left wrist.

Short arcs: lie flat on your back or sit upright with your leg placed horizontally on a flat surface like a chair or bed. Place a rolled up towel under the knee. Pull your toes towards you and clench you thigh muscles. Slowly lift your foot up off the bed until your knee is straight (keep your knee resting on the towel). Hold for 3 secs and slowly lower them on the chair. Repeat 10 times twice a day. Straight leg raise: lie flat on your back. One leg and knee will be straight and other leg should be bent. Pull your toes towards you and tighten/clench the muscle on the front of the thigh, locking your knee straight. Lift your foot up in the air, about 6 inches off the bed. Hold for 3 secs and slowly lower the leg. The knee must remain straight the whole time you are doing this exercise.
