Behavioral Disorder In Children - What Should You Do?

Behavioral Disorder In Children - What Should You Do?

Childhood is bliss, and naturally, it is the ardent desire of every parent to help their child develop as well-rounded adults. However, it can be highly disconcerting if a young child behaves in a defiant, uncooperative manner with extreme hostility towards you. If this is the case, then you must consult with a psychiatrist to find out if your child is suffering from a behavioral disorder which is typically characterized by repetitive and persistent behavior for at least 6 months and more, which are uncommon in other children of the same age.

Types of behavioral disorder
Behavioral disorder can be of various types. However, among the children within 14 years of age, there are three most common types of behavioral disorders. These are conduct disorder where children become violent, aggressive and deceitful, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, where they fail to stay attentive to one thing for long and oppositional defiant disorder, where the children fail to follow disciplines and become argumentative, and defiant.

Common signs
Some of the common signs of a behavioral disorder among children are, threatening or harming themselves or people around them, getting into arguments frequently and throwing tantrums excessively. It might also include getting attracted to different addictions at an early age such as drug use or smoking, inability to perform well in school or developing a tendency to skip school, destroying and damaging property, stealing or lying.

Causes behind it
Factors causing children to develop behavioral disorder can be various. In some cases, it can be a solely genetic reason where the frontal lobe of the brain fails to act correctly. But for others, the reason may be the environment or the way the children are brought up, such as, being a victim of child abuse, or having a dysfunctional family, being neglected, etc.

Probable risks involved
Developing behavioral disorder not only disrupts the daily functioning and activities of a child, but it makes children burst in sudden anger, erupt in defiance, ignoring the disciplines, hampering the harmony and peace of a household.

Ways of dealing with it
The treatments that are available for dealing with behavioral disorder in children are multifaceted, depending on the factors contributing to it and the condition of the child. First of all, the parents need to develop traits like empathy, calm temperament and a cooperative attitude to better communicate with their children. Along with teaching the children various social skills, teaching them anger management, and encouraging them in their hobbies, prescribed medications, family therapy as well as cognitive behavioral therapy might be helpful.

If left untreated for long, behavioral disorder in children can cause severe mental health issues, leading them even to become dysfunctional adults. Therefore, once the signs and symptoms are noticed, parents are advised to consult with a psychiatrist and opt for ways through which they can best help their child.

My child is 4 years & 8 month old boy his weight 15 kg, height is approximately 3 feet 6 inch he don't want to eat anything excepts milk we are giving - pediasure 2-3 times and he love to drink only milk 3-4 times in a day he is very thin and I am always worried his health request to you please guide me. Thanking you

M.D.( Pediatrics), DCH
Pediatrician,
It is an art than science to teach children eat healthy food. Take him along with you when you take your meals. Let him see how and what you eat. Don't scold in order to follow quickly. He will learn by watching you, parents are role model to children. They will behave the same way you behave. Love them, understand them, they have mind of their own. You also know how difficult is our mind to control. So more difficult will be for child. But love will ultimately triumph all. Have patience and work honestly to raise child. It is definitely not easy in an instant era.

Hai lybrate-user, Sorry, but there is no permanent cure for this. Improvement may be achieved but only to a certain extent through Ayurveda. If you are willing for an Ayurvedic assistance, please feel free to consult personally with full medical reports. Give maximum affection and care possible. Your child is gifted to be unique. He/She may develop specific areas of sole interest if guided under an expert. Try to explore those, like singing, painting, handicrafts etc.

It is induration and if the injection was BCG it is normal reaction to form a scar. If other injection was given it can be abscess forming and need to drain it when it is forming pus. Give local heat there and watch.

An 11 month old child needs breastmilk along with complementary foods. If your baby is breastfeeding, you do not need to give him milk from outside sources. Energy supplements like bournvita are okay for kids who consume milk other than mother's milk.

You need not to worry. This is regurgitation occurs after feed usually due to swallowing of air too during feed. If feeding with bottle, switch to spoon feeding which shall reduce episodes of regurgitation. Give more time to burping. At this age if her wt is about 6 kg, it indicates she is taking required feed.

If baby is taking feed properly, there may be chance that he may not be getting full feed or had been over fed which is less likely since he has crying since morning. An other reason may be discomfort for any reason. Look for that. One or two loose motion in a day is normal. I hope he must be on exclusive breast milk.
