Exercises for relaxing the Eyes: -Begin by massaging (apply light pressure) your upper eyelids for 10 seconds. Massage your lower eyelids next. Make gentle, circular movements. -Make an effort to blink more frequently can help ameliorate eye strain. Blinking can thus help ameliorate eye dryness. Try to blink once every four seconds to keep your eyes from drying out. -Giving your eyes more breaks during periods of intense focus or concentration, particularly at a computer screen, will help alleviate eye strain. Try the 20-20-20 method: Every 20 minutes, look away from your screen at any object 20 feet away for 20 seconds. -Rub your palms together beforehand to produce some heat before you begin palming - this heightens the relaxation component of this technique. Cup each hand and close your eyes. Place each cupped hand over each eye. Breathe normally and rest in this position for 5-10 minutes. You may want to set an alarm to keep the time. Medication: Instill 2 drops of Euphrasia eye drops twice daily.

I am suffering from red painful eyes for the last 4 days. Can you suggest what should be done.

FICO, DNB Ophtalmology
Ophthalmologist, Gandhinagar
I am suffering from red painful eyes for the last 4 days. Can you suggest what should be done.
Redness of the eyes has multiple causes associated with it. To enumerate a few common causes: (1) allergy of the eye. It is usually caused by improper eye hygiene. There is a tendency to rub the eyes with fingers, handkerchief, cloth, etc. This is not a good habit because it tends to transmit lots of virus, bacteria and dust into the eye. Allergy usually presents with symptoms of watering (clear water), redness and itching of the eye. (2) infectious conjunctivitis: this is usually associated with white-yellowish discharge. If so, it would be a good idea to go and show to an eye specialist in person. (3) foreign body lodged in the eye. This is more commonly associated with people who drive 2 wheeler vehicles without protection. It occurs more commonly in one eye. Foreign bodies that commonly get lodged are eyelashes, insect wings, small insects, dust particles, iron particles (more common with people working in the iron industry) the solution for a foreign body lodged in the eye would be better provided by an eye specialist at the clinic. (4) raised intraocular pressure: this is a condition known as glaucoma. It is not so common as the previous mentioned conditions. There is usually associated pain in the eyes. It is commonly bilateral (occurs in both eyes). There is usually a positive family history of glaucoma associated in a majority of the cases. (5) inflammation of the coats of the eyeball. This is known as" uveitis" it is also a relatively less common condition. There is associated pain. It would require a thorough eye checkup including the retina-thus a good idea would be to visit the eye specialist in person. From the symptoms described by you, it seems more likely to be a case of allergy. Maintaining the precautions and hygiene that I mentioned should probably work well for you. Hope my suggestions helped you.

Corneal Abrasion - Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

MBBS, MS - Ophthalmology, Diploma in Ophthalmology , Fellowship in Cornea and Anterior Segment

Corneal Abrasion - Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Your eyes are one of the most important parts of your body. They are delicate and essential. But, there are instances of it getting injured. Corneal abrasion or scratched eye is one of the most common injuries related to the eye. It causes discomfort to the eyes. It also leads to reddening of the eye and makes it hypersensitive to light. Corneal abrasions are caused due to loss of corneal cell in the upper region of the cornea. The top or upper layer is known as corneal epithelium.

Cornea is the front part of the eye. It’s task is to help in focusing of light and enables us to see objects. A good and healthy cornea is needed and a must for having good eyesight. Thus, it is always advisable to visit an ophthalmologist immediately after you notice a corneal abrasion or meet with an accident that has led to corneal injury.

What Are The Factor That Causes Corneal Abrasions?

There are a number of ways that can result in corneal abrasion. It should be kept in mind that anything that comes in direct contact with the eye can lead to corneal injury. It is a painful scratch on the clear part of the eye or cornea.countless ways to get a corneal abrasion. Objects ranging from tree branches, paper, make up tools, finger, pet, debris in the workplace to sports toll, anything can cause an injury to the eye.

Most of the corneal abrasions are n’t caused due to traumatic incidents that are noticeable. Your cornea might get affected by sand, dust and any other tiny object. The chance of corneal abrasion increases with dry eyes. The problem gets worse at the time of waking up from sleep. If your eyes are dry, it will get hurt as the lids can tear and dislodge a part of the cornea. It is a myth that contact lenses protect your eyes. They can also be the cause behind corneal abrasion.

Symptoms Of Scratched Cornea:

It is important to know that the cornea is one of the most sensitive parts of our body. Any injury in the cornea can be really painful. Other symptoms may include redness, tearing, headache, blurry vision, etc.

Treatments For Corneal Abrasion:

The treatment depends upon the severity of the injury. Minor injuries can be cured with the help of non-preserved lubricating drops. It fastens the natural healing process. These are also treated with the use of antibiotic drops. The healing may take some two to three days times.

Treatment for a corneal abrasion depends on the severity of the wound and the cause. Minor abrasions sometimes can be treated with non-preserved lubricating drops to keep your eye moist and comfortable while your eye's natural healing process takes place. In critical cases, an antibiotic ointment might be asked to use for a longer period. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an Ophthalmologist.

My eyes are irritating. And tears flow out now and then and I have an painful sensation over it.
Eyes irritate due to exposure to uv rays ie. Sunlight or may continuous use of computer, that cannot be avoided. Tears flow due to this irritation. So while going out and using computers wear antiglare spectacles. When the irritation starts wash your eyes with chilled water 2 to3 times or apply handkerchief soaked in chilled water over the closed eyes and rest for 5 mins. Irritation will reduce almost.

I asked with a doctor he said that an small chalazion is impossible to cure with medicine. Please advice what should i do to cure?

MBBS, DNB (Ophthalmology), Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS)
Ophthalmologist, Thane
I asked with a doctor he said that an small chalazion is impossible to cure with medicine. Please advice what should...
Yes It is true that Chalazion doesn't go away with medical treatment as it a pus encapsulated in deeper layers of lid unlike stye Which is superficial infection with a pus point on skin. Chalazion is usually due to chronic eye strain mostly from Refractive error (glasses no.) And usually patient is not wearing glasses or wearing wrong prescription glasses. So the cause must be treated so that there is no recurring Chalazion. I prefer to give hot fomentation trial for every case of Chalazion too. If it is a recent onset one then with correct glasses & hot fomentation somethimes the Chalazion may reduce. You can try it.

I am 17 years old and my eyes sometime got red while reading or doing any thing. I have a power lens -2.5. What is its cure.

DHMS (Diploma in Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery)
Homeopath, Ludhiana
I am 17 years old and my eyes sometime got red while reading or doing any thing. I have a power lens -2.5. What is it...
Eyes get red due to Straining of eyes.It can be annoying, but it tends to disappear with rest. Although it’s not often a serious condition, eye strain could be a symptom of an underlying problem. Eye strain is known to cause fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and headaches Eye strain may lead to other problems, such as: • Headaches • Difficulty Concentrating • Irritability • Burning Sensation • Watery Eyes • Dry Eyes • Photophobia • Eye Pain The first thing you can do is change your environment and work habits. By doing this you can relieve the pain without spending money on treatment. If you work on the computer, try taking more eye breaks by looking down the hall or out the window, or by closing your eyes for thirty seconds. You should get your eyes checked at least once a year, especially as you grow older. Routine eye exams give you the opportunity to discuss with your Eye Specialist any issues you may be having, and they may enable you to catch any problems in their early stages. Age Frequency 0 to 6 months Minimum of once a year 6 months to 18 years Every 2 – 4 years 19 to 39 years Every 3 – 5 years 40 to 64 years Every 2 – 4 years 65 and older Every 1 – 2 years If you spend a lot of time sitting in front of a computer or reading, you may need prescription glasses solely for those activities. If you work on a computer, taking eye breaks for five minutes every hour can lessen the strain on your eyes. Simply closing your eyes for a few moments can also do wonders. Try standing up, moving around, or taking a short walk to help regain concentration.Regular eye exercises that involve focusing on different distances can help prevent future straining. Blink often. Blinking refreshes and replenishes your eyes naturally. If you are having trouble with blinking due to the dryness of your eyes, try using Homoeopathic CINELUBE EYEDROPS ( HAPDCO) 3 times daily.
