Hot And Cold Therapy - How It Can Help Manage Back Pain?

Hot And Cold Therapy - How It Can Help Manage Back Pain?

Lower back pain can be one of the most physically debilitating things that can affect you and limit your mobility. Even if the pain isn’t that acute, it could still signal something deteriorating in your lower back. While oral medications, topical creams or sprays can help in reducing pain, there are other effective remedies you can try on your own. These will be handy when you have no medications at hand. One of these is the hot and cold therapy.

Heat therapy for lower back pain

Heat works well with lower back pain as it can dilate blood vessels and improve circulation within the tissue. This will help in circulation and also result in lowering the pain. Heat therapy will also loosen up other muscles in the area and help soothe sore areas which have been taking the burden along with the lower back muscles. Some of the techniques that can be applied are:

  • All day heat wraps: These are specially manufactured belts or wraps which wrap around your abdomen and keep tightness and pressure on your lower back as well as supplying heat.
  • Electric heating pads: These are mechanized heating pads which generate heat with electricity. You can place them under you back and then either sit or sleep with it positioned behind you. However, ensure that you don’t keep these for too long as they could burn your skin.
  • Hot Compress with towels or hot water bags: Use a clean towel and heat it over a conductive surface and apply it on your lower back. You can also use hot water bags for the same purpose.

Cold therapy for lower back pain
Cold therapy uses the principle of constriction of blood vessels as well as slowing circulation. This will help numb the area and thus help relieve the pain. Some of the ways these can be administered are mentioned below.

  • Ice towel: In this method, soak a towel in ice cold water, wring it to dry it and then apply on your lower back. This will numb the pain without transferring the sting of the cold or damaging your skin.
  • Ice packs: Put about half a kg of ice in a plastic Ziploc bag and pour water over the ice to just about cover it. Push out the air out of the bag and then lock it. Use this ice pack with a towel to ensure that you back doesn't get wet.
  • Ice gel packs: These are ready made packs, which can be bought from medical stores and kept frozen to be used whenever you need it in order to relieve lower back pain.

Stop taking medicines. Get up early in the morning. Start streching all smaller joints to larger joints. When sleeping support your neck and shoulder with a pillow of medium height so that to contour according to your neck and shoulder.

1. Rule out health problems. Fatigue is a common symptom of many illnesses, including diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, anemia, thyroid disease, and sleep apnea. Many medications can contribute to fatigue. These include some blood pressure medicines, antihistamines, diuretics, and other drugs. 2. Get moving The last thing you may feel like doing when you’re tired is exercising. But many studies show that physical activity boosts energy levels. Exercise has consistently been linked to improved vigor and overall quality of life.People who become active have a greater sense of self-confidence. But exercise also improves the working efficiency of your heart, lungs, and muscles. That’s the equivalent of improving the fuel efficiency of a car. It gives you more energy for any kind of activity. 3. Strike a pose. Although almost any exercise is good, yoga may be especially effective for boosting energy. After six weeks of once-a-week yoga classes, volunteers in a British study reported improvements in clear-mindedness, energy, and confidence. 4. Drink plenty of water. Dehydration zaps energy and impairs physical performance. 5. Get to bed early. Lack of sleep increases the risk of accidents and is one of the leading causes of daytime fatigue. The solution: Get to bed early enough for a full night’s sleep 6. Eat fish. Good for your heart, omega-3 oils may also boost alertness. 7. Keep time with your body clock. Some people get a burst of energy first thing in the morning. They're often called morning larks. Night owls are people who are at their best at the end of the day. These individual differences in daily energy patterns are determined by brain structure and genetics, so they can be tough to change. Instead, become aware of your own circadian rhythms. Then schedule demanding activities when your energy levels are typically at their peak. 8. Shed extra weight. Losing extra weight can provide a powerful energy boost Some people may benefit by eating smaller meals more frequently during the day. This may help to steady your blood sugar level. Favor whole grains and other complex carbohydrates. These take longer than refined carbohydrates to digest, preventing fluctuations of blood sugar. FOR MEDICATION CONSULT ONLINE IN PRIVATE

Hello sir, My uncle has met with brain stroke 3 years back. As of now he is gud but his left hand is just like we keep the hand when fractured and his fingers are closed just we close our fingers. Nerves are clumsy and are not free to move. His ring finger makes all fingers to be close. His fist is always closed due to tight fix of nerves. Is there any injection to free up nerves so that he can easily open and close his hands.

MBBS, MD-General Medicine, DM - Cardiology
Cardiologist, Secunderabad
Dear, although I am not a neurologist, I would like to still answer your question. Your uncle has suffered from brain stroke, which means part of the brain tissue controlling movements of his right side of the body is affected/damaged. This happens when blood supply to that area is blocked for some reason, say blockade in artery supplying that part. Subsequent recovery depends upon restoration of that blood flow, and how quickly its restored. After initial stage recovery in such cases takes a long time. Continued treatment with physiotherapy is required to bring back some functions. But some residual weakness may remain. Best of luck.
