We need to identify cause of recurrent eye lid infection and then treat it. Rule out diabetes by checking blood sugar levels -both fasting and 2 hours after a meal. Rule out refractive error, eyelid inflammation called blepharitis, eye allergies, dryness...They cause eye rubbing and germs from ur hands cause eye infections. maintain eyelids hygiene as well. So wash your hands or use a hand sanitiser every 1-2 hours. DON'T touch your eyes.

Hello, Bloodshot eyes appear red because the vessels at the surface of the white portion of the eye become swollen. Vessels may swell due to: Eye dryness Too much sun exposure Dust or other particles in the eye Allergies Infection Injury Eye infections or inflammation can cause redness as well as possible itching, discharge, pain, or vision problems. Other causes of eye redness include Colds or allergies, Acute glaucoma, Corneal scratches: Injuries caused by sand, dust, or overuse of contact lenses. Sometimes, a bright red spot, called a subconjunctival hemorrhage, will appear on the white of the eye. This often happens after straining or coughing, which causes a broken blood vessel on the surface of the eye. Most often, there is no pain and your vision is normal. It is almost never a serious problem. Because the blood leaks into the conjunctiva, which is clear, you cannot wipe or rinse the blood away. Like a bruise, the red spot will go away within a week or two. Management: - Try to rest your eyes if redness is due to fatigue or eye strain. No other treatment is needed. - Wash your hands, hold clean water in your hand, keep your eyes closer to the water and dip the eyes by blinking the eyelids frequently in the held water in hand. Repeat it for 3-4 times again. - Avoid watching T. V. Working on computer or mobile, reading or frequently keep blinking your eyes to avoid dryness. Take frequent breaks in between. - In case there is itching, use a clean napkin or a tissue to wipe the tears and cleaning the eyelids gently. -Wear an UV-rays protected sunglasses while you are out in sun. Medication: Take homoeopathic medicines - Schwabe’s Belladonna 30 and Euphrasia 30 - both thrice daily for 4 days. Use Euphrasia Eye drops twice daily. Revert back thereafter.

Here are health tips of Childhood Squint

Hi, I'm Dr. Archana Gupta Mahajan. I'm a senior consultant at Pediatric Ophthalmology, squint at Bharti Eye Hospital. Today I'm going to talk a little bit about childhood squint. I just wanted to say this that squint as a problem is not unsymptomptable. Any child that you notice is squinting, parents should bring the child for check up as early as possible to a Pediatric Ophthalmologist.

A detail evaluation including dilated evaluation would be done and whatever treatment is needed needs to do be done. That means either glasses, it might be exercised, also timely surgery. So surgery is not something to be scared of. A squint Sergey is an extracular surgery, it’s a very simple surgery and done at the right time it is sight saving. Also under sum up in the end and say this at the moment you notice a squint in a child you should be brought it for a check up. Children should be evaluated by an Ophthalmologist before 3 years of age years or before the child goes to school.

Thank you. Any queries you can connect with me at lybrate.com or call up our hospital at Bharti Eye Hospital.

There is no medication or food for improving eyesight or to get rid of glasses. If not interested in glasses then you can try a. Contact lens b. Lasik laser as your age is now 19 years so your number will not increase now whether you wear glasses or not as number becomes stable at age of 18-20 yrs. Having said that I advise you to eat balanced diet including green vegetables and seasonal fruits for keeping eyes and body healthy. If you are not comfortable with contact lens then go for lasik. Lasik is a very easy and painless procedure. If you want to get rid of glasses then go for lasik.

Give me the complete details about lasik laser treatment. I am suffering from short sight. Thank you.
Lasik is a simple laser procedure which changes the shape of the cornea so that the light rays fall on the retina properly. Basically a flap is made on the cornea, the laser is then given to cornea and flap is reposited. It is a painless procedure. It is a day care procedure does not require any injections, does not require admission, you can simply resume your duties in 2 days. Cost varies from centre to centre. Side effects are usually limited to dryness of eyes for few months. We can do lasik anytime after age of 18 years. You need to undergo proper prelasik checkup to decide whether lasik is safe for you or not

Hi doctors,
I have severe eye irritation every day during mightier. Suggest some ideas to reduce eye irritation.
Hi lybrate-user, here are some natural solutions for you which will help you get rid of the problem. 1. Eyebright herb is one of the best natural home remedies for Eye Infections. You can take eyebright tea, tincture or liquid extract, or use a light mixture (a teaspoon of dried eyebright steeped in a pint of boiling water) as an eye wash about 3-4 times in a day. It can also be used as a compress over eyes. 2. Using aloe vera juice as eyewash is a highly beneficial natural cure for Eye Infections. You can also soak a piece of cloth in the juice and place it over your eyes to reduce Eye Infection. It is particularly helpful in healing Stye. Warm tea bags or compresses can also be used to cure Sty naturally. 3. Add 2-3 granules of alum in a glass of distilled water and use this mixture as eyewash for about one week to get rid of Eye Infections like Stye. 4. Placing warm compresses infused with lavender rose or chamomile oil is another useful Eye Infections home remedy. 5. Add three tablespoons of honey in about two cups of boiling water and use this solution to wash your eyes in order to reduce Eye Infections. Or, you can simply put one or two drops of honey in eye for 2-3 times in a day. 6. Placing cold bread over the eyes is one of the simplest natural home remedies for Eye Infections to reduce itching and inflammation. Cold tea bags can be placed over eyes to relieve burning sensation. Cold red raspberry tea bags are quite soothing in this regard. 7. Boric acid eye wash is another useful Eye Infection natural cure for Conjunctivitis because it has antibacterial and antifungal properties. To prepare this eyewash, add one teaspoon of boric acid and ten drops of goldenseal tincture in a cup of boiling water. Hope this helps. Good Luck.

Dear Lybrate user. I can understand. Having tears on a person's eyes when he hear the siren of an ambulance or when hearing a tragic news, reading about an accident etc is usually considered as sympathetic issue. There is always a link between sympathy and emotion. Your friend could be emotionally unstable. He needs to take EQ test. Then we can determine the treatment. Take care.

How To Treat Lazy Eye?

FACS, FRCOphth, Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS), MS - Ophthalmology, MBBS
Ophthalmologist, Kolkata
How To Treat Lazy Eye?

Amblyopia is commonly known as 'Lazy Eye'. It is a vision development disorder, which affects eyes and the brain during infancy and childhood. It signifies that the eye does not achieve a normal visual acuity even with refractive correction in form of glasses or contact lens. During normal visual development, the eye and brain learns to 'see' and develop binocularity, that is the ability to perceive depth (Stereoacuity). This occurs in the first 8 to 10 years of life.

Each eye transmits a clear and identical image from retina to the brain, which fuses the two images into a single image with 3 dimensions ( adding depth). When the image is formed on the retina of two eyes is too dissimilar, the brain cannot fuse the two images and suppresses the more blurred image. As a result, the worse eye does not learn to 'see' and becomes 'lazy'. This condition is seen in 1-4% of population.

The common causes for dissimilar images or Amblyopia are:

1. Misalignment of the eyes or squint: It is the primary reason for Amblyopia is misalignment of the eyes. In case, both your eyes are not aimed in the same direction, the image captured by each eye is different , resulting in diplopia. The brain will see from the dominant eye and suppress image from the other eye. Over a prolonged period of time, the eye dissociates from the visual cortex of the brain.

2. Refractive Amblyopia:

  • Unequal refractive error in both eye. When the eye power of both eyes differ by more than 1.5D of spherical equivalent, which results in dissimilar images between the two eyes. As a result, the visual development in restricted in the worse eye.
  • High refractive error or astigmatism in both eyes, since there is a blurred image in both eyes, the normal vision development does not occur in either eyes resulting in bilateral lazy eyes.

3. Cloudiness in visual system or visual deprivation Amblyopia: Any kind of obstruction or cloudiness in the normal visual axis of the eye tissues can lead to Amblyopia. Disorder of any kind, which blocks a clear image from being focused blocks the formation of a clear image on your retina. Commonly due to congenital or developmental cataracts or corneal opacities or prolonged closure of one eye in early childhood( drooping of one eyelid, eyelid swelling, patching of one eye).

Treatment for Amblyopia: For treatment of Amblyopia, a child must be compelled to utilize his affected, weaker eye. This can be done by correction of causative factor such as, treating refractive error with glasses, surgical correction of misalignment of eyes followed by patching and vision therapy, cataract surgery.

Patching or occlusion of the good eye: This is done to force the brain to pay attention to visual input from the worse eye. This allows nerve connections between affected eye and brain to develop due to, which the eye 'learns to see'. Eye drops such as atropine are also used for blurring the vision of the good eye. Some form of vision therapy may also be required to train both eyes to see together and develop some degree of depth perception.

To be effective, treatment should be implement as early as possible , within the period of normal visual development best within first 8 years of life. Some visual gain has been seen in selected patients up to age of 14 to 18 years. This also highlights the importance of a comprehensive eye examination as a routine in young children. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an Ophthalmologist.
