I am having agoraphobia taken counselling sessions and cbt. Take medication as an when required lonazep .5 mg. How can I overcome anxiety and fear.

BASM, MD, MS (Counseling & Psychotherapy), MSc - Psychology, Certificate in Clinical psychology of children and Young People, Certificate in Psychological First Aid, Certificate in Positive Psychology
Psychologist, Palakkad
Dear lybrate user. I can understand. Agoraphobia treatment consists of cognitive behavioral therapy, life style changes, relaxation therapy and meditation. Once you learn how to manage your anxiety yourself with the help of the above treatment methods, you will be cured and you can stop the medicines if any. You are already under cbt treatment. Usually it takes 6 months to one year for a complete cure. The improvement purely depends on the efficacy of the cbt. Hope your cbt is good. Take care.

Dear Lybrate user, If a doctor has told you not to wrry, you should not worry and the recurrent pain has to be due to anxiety. Anxiety disorders are a category of mental disorders characterized by feelings of anxiety and fear, where anxiety is a worry about future events and fear is a reaction to current events. These feelings may cause physical symptoms, such as a racing heart and shakiness. There are a number of anxiety disorders: including generalized anxiety disorder, a specific phobia, social anxiety disorder, separation anxiety disorder, agoraphobia, and panic disorder among others. While each has its own characteristics and symptoms, they all include symptoms of anxiety. Anxiety medicines alone cannot cure anxiety disorders mainly because medicines do not alter behavior. Behavior change and Continuous practice of the changed behavior cure anxiety. I suggest anxiety education, progressive counseling and progressive psychotherapy. I assure you complete cure. I need to know more about your anxiety so that I will be able to diagnose it properly and provide you tips to overcome and manage your anxiety. Take care.

Symptoms of Bipolar Disorder

MBBS, MD - Psychiatry
Sexologist, Mumbai
Symptoms of Bipolar Disorder

As per medical studies, bipolar disorder is a personality disorder that is said to affect millions of people around the world, as per medical studies. Extreme mood swings that take a person from a state of euphoria to depression can be called bipolar disorder. While we all go through phases of the same, the patients who suffer from this disorder will usually show a persistent swing or shift between varying moods. The severe shifts will lead to difficulties when it comes to managing one's everyday affairs in a normal manner. The symptoms and signs are also characterised by the phases and mood swings that the patient may be going through.

Read on to know more about the signs and symptoms of bipolar disorder:

  1. Mania: One of the extremes in mood swings experienced by the patient includes extreme euphoria or mania for no apparent, or life altering reason. Feeling overly happy and enthusiastic are the basic symptoms of this phase.
  2. Impulsive: The patient can end up feeling elated for a prolonged period of time, with extreme restlessness and impulsive behaviour. They may also end up getting agitated and edgy. This is usually characterised by fidgety behaviour and when the patient speaks too fast. The patient may speak too fast due to racing thoughts which overtake his or her speech and actions.
  3. Confidence: In this stage, the patient may also display extraordinary confidence, which may not necessarily be backed by reality. In reality, things may be very different in terms of opportunities, skills, people and other such factors. During this mania phase, the patient may also indulge in risky behaviour that gives an adrenaline rush like gambling and having sexual intercourse with multiple partners. This usually happens when the patient is bolstered by a sudden surge of unfounded confidence.
  4. Depression: This is the other end of the spectrum for these patients. When the mania abates, it gives to way to extreme depression and even anxiety.
  5. Withdrawal: The patient usually tends to isolate himself or herself from the rest of the family and social circle for a prolonged period, refusing to meet anyone on a normal basis. They also avoid contact with people whom they meet every day, which can have an adverse effect on their work and the rest of the aspects of their lives.
  6. Memory and Concentration: In this phase, the patient can also experience difficulty in remembering important things and concentrating on tasks. The patient may also be preoccupied with a number of things which can prevent him or her from making proper decisions. Slow speech and lack of energy may follow as a result of such preoccupation. Preoccupation with death is a common symptom of this phase. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.

Dear Lybrate user, At your age, Memory problems like amnesia, dementia etc are not common. Many young people are having problems with memory. These problems are either they are too busy or due to anxiety and stress. Busy people use organizers or employ a personal assistant because they can't remember every task. You need to understand this. If you still say, you are having memory problems, we need to check your memory using memory test. If you want more of my help in this regard, please contact me. Take care.

It is not mandatory to take vitamin supplements with fluoxetine. It is helpful in all types of depression but in psychotic depression it is advisable to use it along with some atypical dopamine antagonists. For more details or queries you may consult me online.

Hi. I really feel depressed. Dnt want to be with anyone. Negative thoughts about life. Always stressed. Full of anxiety for even small matters. Plss help.

MD - Psychiatry, MBBS
Psychiatrist, Delhi
Depression should be objectively treated as an illness. Low mood, withdrawn behaviour, lack of interest and motivation, low energy and anxiety are symptoms of the same. Please lift yourself and approach a psychiatrist asap, the earlier you start, the earlier you are likely to regain your ownself. Medicines alongwith psychotherapy should take care of you completely. Take care.

Dear sir, I am in very much depression, pls suggest me, I have already use serta 100 mg for last 9 months but there is no good result. I am taking treating from pgi chandigarh

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
You must combine medical treatment with therapy to ideally combat depression. Seek a counselor who is well versed in treating depression to get you to develop skills and techniques to deal with the daily challenges that life throws at you. Medication does not give you these adaptations but it certainly addresses the chemical imbalances in the brain to bring about normalcy. Apart from that you must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, and wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, eat more of proteins, nuts, and vegetables, attend yoga classes etc. Watch a lot of sitcoms on tv or comedies and cheer yourself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose yourself to some sunlight every day, at least 30 minutes but not in the scotching heat. I hope you can find someone to love and be loved too. Whatever happens please incorporate these three important adaptations in your life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If you did these three things, lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in god to alleviate your sufferings too.

My brother is 20 yrs old. He is in a situation where he is talking contineously ; abusing people and he is not ready to go to the psychiatrist or take any medicine and it is very hard for us to bring him forcefully to any psychiatrists. So how can we convience him to go to the psychatrist and how to make him feel better at home ?

M.D,Psychiatry

It will be in your best interest if you contact local psychiatrist. If this is not possible then give him tab olimelt 10 mg at night by mixing in some food. If he is diabetic then don't give this medicine.

Dear lybrate-user, 16 is a very beautiful age when you grow up, out of a "child" phase into a "young man" phase. There are hormone changes that confuse and can lead to depression if not understood. Follow a healthy diet and get a lot of physical exercise. Sweating helps reduce the burden of growing up hormone imbalances and you will start to fell better in a day or two. Regards.

Hi lybrate-user, your son is still young, definitely young guys of this age mostly have this vomiting problem and gastric problem at this age. Though there is no underlying physiological cause, many other reasons like fear of getting fever and vomiting also triggers vomiting. Do not worry. Give gas tablets before meals. He needs counselling and relaxation therapy. Do not worry, This vomiting will be completely cured. You are requested to ask your son to talk to me for counselling after booking appointment. If you are interested kindly contact so that we can discuss further. Do not worry this is a simple problem. Give good at correct time for your son. With regards,

I have been smoking from 3 years and daily 5 to 6 cigars. Will I get cancer? Please advise.

DNB, DPM, MBBS
Psychiatrist, Delhi
This are harms of smoking --- Smoking is a huge risk for lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, accounting for more than 75 percent of all deaths from these disorders. Smoking doubles the risk for cardiovascular disease deaths, but, because this disease is more prevalent, it accounts for as many smoking deaths as cancer and lung disease. The third major cause of tobacco-related mortality is chronic obstructive lung disease. Other common smoking-related diseases include low-birth-weight offspring, perinatal complications, other cancers (e.g., throat, bladder, and pancreas), and ulcers. Second-hand smoke increases the risk of cancer and heart disease in spouses and the incidence of respiratory and ear problems in children. The tar in cigarette smoke is responsible for the cancers. Irritants and ciliotoxins appear to be responsible for lung diseases. Carbon monoxide and clotting factors appear to be the most likely causes of cardiovascular disease. The role of nicotine in cardiovascular disease appears to be much smaller than previously thought, and how many perinatal problems (including sudden infant death syndrome) are caused by carbon monoxide or by nicotine is debatable. Smokeless tobacco, pipes, and cigars cause oral cancers, especially when accompanied by heavy alcohol use.
