Hi good morning just want to ask you abt alzimer, my mom has a alzimer and it is advance stage so Is there any new invention for alzimer

MBBS, MD Psychiatry, DNB Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Nagpur
Alzheimer's dementia at advanced stage means your mother might be having forgetfulness, confusion about time, place and person and impaired consciousness at times. Also behaviour problems and personality changes are also common. There is no medicine currently available to reverse changes of alzheimers in the brain. However the rapid progression of symptoms can be arrested using a combination of few medicines. Also for behaviour and sleep problems she can be put on medications that she could find benefit with. She needs supportive management only.

If you had an EMG/ NCS that diagnosed you with carpal tunnel, you can decide further management based on its results- for mild to moderate cases, hand therapy is the key, using splints as well; for severe cases surgery is better- a hand surgeon should be able to help.

My friend met with an accident on Saturday night due to blood clot in central part of the brain, he is in deep coma right now since that day. Please help me know he can be recovered.

PDDM, MHA, MBBS
General Physician, Nashik
The outcome for coma and vegetative state depends on the cause and on the location, severity, and extent of neurological damage: outcomes range from recovery to death. People may emerge from a coma with a combination of physical, intellectual, and psychological difficulties that need special attention. Recovery usually occurs gradually, with patients acquiring more and more ability to respond. Some patients never progress beyond very basic responses, but many recover full awareness. Patients recovering from coma require close medical supervision. A coma rarely lasts more than 2 to 4 weeks. Some patients may regain a degree of awareness after vegetative state. Others may remain in a vegetative state for years or even decades. The most common cause of death for a person in a vegetative state is infection such as pneumonia. Duration depends on the severity of the injury and patient general condition, often short; rarely more than 2-4 weeks.

Dear Lybrate User, *Try to keep to a regular timing for going to bed*Avoid fried and heavy foods. Eat early and light food at night so that the food is almost digested by the time you go to bed. *Prefer fruits and green vegetables. *Fix daily work schedule and be busy with your work. Don’t keep pending problems in mind. Note down the points and leave them for next day’s action. *Don’t do stimulating mental work or keep watching TV which can keep your mind agitated or active. This will not allow you to sleep. LCD screen will also have adverse effect. *Day’s physical exercise makes you tired and induces sleep. *A warm bath in the evening will also be helpful. *Low volume music also induces sleep. *Keep your bed room neat, dark and cool. You may cover your eyes with bed sheet. *Drink plenty of water during the day rather than toward bedtime. *Don’t have stimulating drinks like tea or coffee Drinking a glass of milk before going to bed is fine. *Daily Massage body with coconut oil and bath with warm water,

KETOGENIC DIET:

The ketogenic diet is a special high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet that helps to control seizures in some people with epilepsy.
Doctors usually recommend the ketogenic diet for children whose seizures have not responded to several different seizure medicines.
The typical ketogenic diet, called the "long-chain triglyceride diet," provides 3 to 4 grams of fat for every 1 gram of carbohydrate and protein.
Several studies have shown that the ketogenic diet does reduce or prevent seizures in many children whose seizures could not be controlled by medications.

Few things related to headache so that we can plan the treatment accordingly - if pain is associated with blurred or decreased vision than check your eye sight for refractive error - if the pain is associated with cold and fever than we have to rule out sinusitis as the cause and if the pain is pulsatile in nature and with a throbbing pain usually with an aura than we have to rule out migrane as the cause - if the pain is associated with neck problems than we have to rule out cervical spondylosis as the cause - if the pain is associated with either low or high bp or due to hyperacidity than we have to treat the cause after examination.

Hi, my daughter is ten years old. She has a stomach pain in 2012, which disappeared for 2 years. In between she was treated with pain killer injection and gas injection for relief, and finally she was given t. B medicine. Then she was okay for two years. Now she has again the same complain of abdominal pain. We admitted her at nearby nursing home. She was again treated with pain killer injection and gas injection. Dear your daughter seems to be having a neurological manifestation of henoch-schonlein purpura. In this disorder, patients usually have altered level of consciousness with associated problems in the form of convulsions (seizures) and visual or verbal problems. There can be episodes of bleeding in the brain too with associated brain swelling. The treatment strategy would be to provide steroids and keep a watch on further development of symptoms in the neurological arena. She needs a complete evaluation with vasculitis profile, eeg, mri brain etc.
