The Best Vitamins & Minerals For Your Teeth

The Best Vitamins & Minerals For Your Teeth

The tooth may look a tiny structure, but is a very complicated one. Structurally, it has very high concentrations of minerals and vitamins, all essential for optimal dental health. Reduced or increased amounts of these substances can lead to obvious defects in the teeth, which may impair aesthetics and sometimes even the functioning of the tooth.
While calcium is one mineral that would immediately come to mind, there are a lot of other vitamins and minerals too which play a significant role both in tooth formation and in optimal dental health. Listed below are some of these, along with their role in dental health.

Vitamins:

  1. Vitamin A: Often associated with vision, vitamin A is essential for production of good amount of saliva which maintains healthy mucous membranes. Reduced saliva increases predisposition to decay and gum disease and also increases bad breath.
  2. Vitamin D: Needless to say, with the strength of the jaw bones, a good amount of calcium is required to boost bone mineral density.
  3. Vitamin C: The gums have connective tissue fibers which help bind the tooth to the jaw bone. For good strength of the connective tissue, vitamin C is important. Therefore, vitamin C deficiency can lead to tooth mobility and even tooth loss in severe cases.
  4. Vitamin B complex: There are too many people who would have popped a multivitamin to ward off mouth sores. Niacin and riboflavin especially are essential for optimal mucosal health and reduce inflammation.
  5. Vitamin K: This has multiple roles to play. It helps in improving the body's healing process, blocks substances that break down bone, promotes bone strength, and reduces bleeding disorders.
  6. Minerals: There is a long list of minerals that are essential for optimal dental health, as below:
  7. Calcium: From strong enamel to jaw bone, calcium is extremely important for the tooth to be fully formed. Calcium deficiency can result in hypoplastic teeth that are more prone for chipping and decay.
  8. Potassium: Needed to improve bone mineral density. It also works in conjunction with magnesium and prevents from the blood turning too acidic. Acidic blood can suck out calcium from teeth and bones.
  9. Fluoride: Proven to be the anti-decay magic medicine, fluoride reduces the incidence of tooth decay. Fluoride gels are applied for children to promote remineralization of enamel which may have initial caries.
  10. Phosphorus: Provides support to calcium and potassium in bone formation.
  11. Iron: Required for keeping red blood cell count at a good level and fighting infections.
  12. Iodine: This trace mineral is required for absorption of calcium and potassium that is essential for tooth formation.
  13. Zinc: Naturally found in saliva, it fights against plaque formation and subsequent infections.

For optimal dental function, ensure your diet has these essential nutrients.

Hi lybrate-user! its good to hear that you stopped smoking! apart from yellowing your teeth it is also a leading cause of oral cancer. To make your teeth white again you can 1. Go to a dentist, get scaling and polishing done. Ask for bleaching your teeth. 2. Try rubbing strawberries on your teeth. Keep it for 2-3 mins and rinse. Repeat 3 times a week. There are various home based methods which proclaim to brighten up your teeth but over zealous use of them can lead to enamel weakening and porosities and hence teeth sensitivities.

To avoid infection and reduce pain in a first-degree burn on the tongue: rinse the area well with cool water for a few minutes. Remove any dirt or particles that may be on the burn. Wet a clean cloth with cool water and hold it on top of the burn. Suck on ice chips or a popsicle to soothe the pain. Gargle with cool water or salt water. Avoid warm or hot liquids, which could irritate the burn. Take acetaminophen or ibuprofen for pain and inflammation. Sprinkle a few grains of sugar on the tongue to relieve pain.

Bad breath can be due to various reasons. If you have bleeding gums or tartar accumulation on your teeth, a dental cleaning will help you overcome the problem. If you have any other issue like constipation or acidity or sinusitis etc, you need to get the root cause of the problem treated. In the meanwhile you can use any over the counter mouthwash and maintain a good oral hygiene which will reduce the bad smell to some extent.

Infections affecting the throat may also affect other tissues and the uvula to swell. Allergic reactions may lead to rapid swelling of the throat and mouth (also known as edema). When this happens, it can spread and affect or infect the uvula. Injuries to the uvula can cause it to swell. To treat this, antibiotics, steroids and antihistamines are prescribed.

Hi, there are various reasons of bad breath, like impurities in blood, inefficient digestive system, dry mouth (lack of saliva production), gum disease, cavities, plaque and tartar formation around teeth and gums, kind of diet, improper brushing / cleaning of mouth etc. I would advise you to get a thorough physical and dental examination to rule out the cause of bad breath and to solve it permanently.

This may be due scaling. May be due to iron present in water. Rub a piece of lemon in your tooth. Brush with baking soda. And visit your dentist.

All of sudden I felt my tooth was shaking and I rushed to my dentist. He told that it was not entire tooth that was shaking but half of the tooth was shaking. As there was a crack. He told the root of the tooth was fine but only lower portion was bad. He said that I have to get the entire tooth removed and there. Was no other option. So I went ahead snd got it removed. Later when I searched the Internet, I found there were ways to save such tooth. I am feeling so bad that I lost one more tooth because of my dentists lack of latest knowledge. I want to confirm if my dentist did the right thing in order to decide if I should continue with him or find another dentist. Till now I have lost 6 tooth in all and have had 4 root canal. Could this be because my dentist hasn't been giving me right advice. I take care of my oral hygiene. I brush twice daily and rinse my mouth well after every meal and avoid eating sweet stuff but still my oral condition is in bad shape. Wondering if my doctor could have saved my oral condition by giving me timely advice by attacking the root cause rather than solving the issue as and when they were rise up?

There are certain ways that r invented to save those teeth bt it need proper training for that and also equipment. The dentist hv done what is perhaps best to his knowledge. Bt if you hv any doubt then go for another 2 or 3 advise consequently. That's how your doubt can be clear. Not alwyz intetnet give the right information.

I'm gradually losing enamel on my gums how to reduce it and what can I do for whiting of my teeth.

I'm gradually losing enamel on my gums how to reduce it and what can I do for whiting of my teeth.
If your gums are losing attachment to tooth surface then there may be calculus (hard stone like) deposits at gum line. You may need scaling (professional cleaning) and polishing of your teeth. Learn proper brushing technique also form your dentist. This will improve your oral hygiene and colour problem too. Remember permanent teeth are always yellowish white. So need not to worry much.

Sometime I have swelling in my teeth and some liquid comes from there.
What should I do please help.
The type of treatment you have for toothache/swelling will depend on the cause of the pain, so your dentist will examine your mouth and may carry out an X-ray to try to identify the problem. •If your toothache/swelling is caused by tooth decay, your dentist will remove the decayed area and replace it with a filling. •If your toothache/swelling is caused by a loose or broken filling, the filling will be taken out, any decay will be removed and a new filling put in place. •If the pulp inside your tooth is infected, you may need root canal treatment. This procedure involves removing the infected pulp and then inserting a special type of filling to seal the tooth and prevent re-infection. •If your toothache/swelling can't be treated using these methods, or if your tooth is impacted (wedged between another tooth and your jaw), it may need to be removed.
