Insomnia - Can It Affect Your Emotions?

MBBS, MD - Psychiatry, MBA (Healthcare)
Psychiatrist, Davanagere
Insomnia - Can It Affect Your Emotions?

There is a distinct relationship between sleeping disorders and your emotional health. Both influence each other. Insomnia, a common sleeping disorder, is generally caused due to stress and tension. Depression and anxiety also account for insomnia. It has been proven by research that people who experience sleeplessness or cases of insomnia are at a higher risk of depression and similar psychiatric disorders.

Insomnia is an important factor which causes depression, and many people affected by it commit suicide. Researchers have found dysfunctional activity in the area of the brain where emotions are processed and regulated, among people with insomnia. Their study explains the mechanism by which insomnia affects and influences emotions in people, which leads to depression and other disorders.

The ways in which insomnia affects your emotions

There is a clear difference in the brain activities of people with insomnia when compared with normal people who get good sleep. There is usually a great difference between the activities of the amygdala, which are neurons in the temporal lobe of the brain. The amygdala is very important in regulation and processing of emotions.

  1. Insomnia disrupts the ability of the brain to process negative emotions.
  2. Neural change and problems with regulating emotions are also caused because of insomnia.
  3. Insomnia disables the ability of judging or sensing any kind of emotion by looking at the face of a person. It is difficult to judge emotions such as anger and sadness in people suffering from insomnia. This impairment occurs more in women.
  4. Insomnia and similar sleeping disorders affect our inhibition and disrupt our impulse control mechanism. An insomniac person is likely to develop increased impulsiveness to negative stimulus.
  5. People suffering from insomnia develop a perception towards negative stuff and perceive most things in a negative way, rather than looking at the bright side which a normal person tends to do. People affected by insomnia are characterized by a negative mood and are pessimists in nature.
  6. A sleep deprived or insomniac patient shows greater activity around the limbic area of the brain. This is the area where major emotional regulation and processing are undertaken.
  7. A person suffering from insomnia develops a cranky personality. The patient is in an irritable mood and is triggered by the slightest and pettiest of circumstances. An insomniac patient is also characterized by swinging moods, high temper and general fatigue, which result due to lack of sleep.

Insomnia is a sleeping disorder which directly affects a person's emotions and the processing and regulation of emotions. There is a direct and important link between insomnia and emotional disorders. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Psychiatrist.

Hi lybrate-user Know and understand how to gain weight in a healthy manner While some people try their level best to lose weight, others go to all kinds of lengths to gain weight in order to look healthy. Contrary to belief, people who are generally skinny don’t know how to increase weight and often find it difficult to do so. This is usually because they have a high body metabolism rate which doesn’t allow fat to accumulate, resulting in faster burning of calories. Fortunately, there are several tips to gain weight, which are not only effective, but healthy as well. How to increase weight and stay healthy If you are attempting to increase your weight, it is important to remember that simply eating anything at all will not help. Incorrect eating habits might not only affect your body functioning, but could also have other undesired effects on you. This is why it is important to eat correctly, while keeping track of your daily activities. Listed below are some simple and effective tips to gain weight. Put together a schedule Like most other things, it is essential to put together a detailed and achievable schedule that will help you gain the numbers you want. For this you will need to measure the different parts of your body like thighs, waist, hips, stomach etc. So that you can keep track of your progress. Along with keeping a track of your measurements, it is also necessary to keep track of the foods you consume and the kind of exercise that you might have to indulge in to help pile on the pounds. Prepare a nutritious diet plan When trying to increase weight, you simply cannot start by consuming fatty foods. Much like how you follow a particular diet to lose weight, you will have to chart a specific diet plan to put on weight. For this you have to pay careful attention to the proteins, fats and carbohydrates you consume. Ensure you diet has foods that are rich in calories and will help you gain weight like nuts, oats and whole grains. Other foods that can help to increase weight are dairy products like cheese, yogurt and ice creams. You can also include beverages like fresh fruit juices or milk shakes to help increase your weight. Strategic and frequent meals Instead of over indulging in food, it is advisable to consume 5-6 small portion meals every day, within a gap of 3-4 hours. When doing so, you should also make sure that you consume those foods that are higher in calories first, and then the ones with lower calories. For instance, while having breakfast, have eggs first and then cereal. It is also important that you eat the right kinds of food which will help you gain weight naturally, rather than foods that are full of sugars and fats. Healthy and nutritious snacks You are bound to feel hungry in between meals even on a healthy diet. In such times, it is best to keep nutritious and healthy snacks at reach to sate hunger pangs. Whole wheat or whole grain sandwiches, fruit and nut mixes, dry fruits and pistachios are some of the best snacks because they provide necessary nutrition and are tasty. Drink plenty of liquids One of the most important parts of a diet, whether losing or gaining weight, is to drink plenty of liquids to keep your body hydrated. However, while losing weight requires beverages like water and green tea, while gaining weight you need to have beverages that supplement you with calories. Fresh fruit juices and fruit milkshakes are some of the best options because along with keeping you hydrated, they also provide the necessary calorie intake and do not affect appetite. Weight and strength training In addition to consuming the right foods, it is also important to add weight and strength training to your daily activities. With this you can strengthen muscles, which in turn can help in increasing overall body weight. Light or medium strength or weight training will help in adding lean muscles, which is ideal for those who want to gain weight while staying fit. However, it is important to stay away from too much of cardio or aerobic exercises as they are usually used for burning fat and calories. Get adequate rest While eating all the right things and working out to gain the right amount of weight, it is also vital that you get adequate rest. Keeping up with a busy work life and looking after yourself well can be a little draining, which is why you need to sleep and rest well. This will rejuvenate both, your body and mind and leave you feeling fresh and healthy every day. These are some of the most effective tips to gain weight, naturally and healthily. However, if you don’t know how to increase weight in the right way, you can also consult a nutritionist or dietician to help you get the right schedule. This will ensure you have someone knowledgeable to speak to in case you run into any difficulties.

She is a diabetic patient. Sometimes she feel very fatigue. Please give me a suggestion.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
She is a diabetic patient. Sometimes she feel very fatigue. Please give me a suggestion.
Diabetes affects all organs in the body – Eyes, kidneys, nerves, reproductive system all are affected, In fact, from toe to hair. For diabetic control, patient and doctor should be in constant touch for regular follow up and advice. The common symptoms are:-Both types of diabetes have some of the same tell-tale warning signs. Hunger and fatigue. Your body converts the food you eat into glucose that your cells use for energy. But your cells need insulin to bring the glucose in. If your body doesn't make enough or any insulin, or if your cells resist the insulin your body makes, the glucose can't get into them and you have no energy. This can make you more hungry and tired than usual. Urinating more often and being thirstier. The average person usually has to pee between four and seven times in 24 hours, but people with diabetes may go a lot more. Dry mouth and itchy skin. Because your body is using fluids to make pee, there's less moisture for other things. You could get dehydrated, and your mouth may feel dry. Dry skin can make you itchy. Blurred vision. Changing fluid levels in your body could make the lenses in your eyes swell up. They change shape and lose their ability to focus. Diabetes, often referred to by doctors as diabetes mellitus, describes a group of metabolic diseases in which the person has high blood glucose (blood sugar), either because insulin production is inadequate, or because the body's cells do not respond properly to insulin, or both. It is a difficult task to control blood sugar in the desired normal range. Whatever we eat is metabolised to sugar in the body to provide energy for our daily activities. For the absolute control, one has to monitor his / her blood sugar at regular intervals (Self-Monitoring of Blood glucose – SMBG). Though difficult, this can be done by a glucometer and keep a record. Get an idea of Fasting sugar (FBS) and 2 hours after food (PPBS), & HbA1C (inform me) and check before dinner and after every major food. The basic idea is to reduce the food intake to 1/3 of what you take now. The dictum of sugar control is diet, exercise, diet + medicine and at later stage medicine+ Insulin will be needed. There are different diet plans of varying calories for each person depending on his activity & life style. For diabetes, hypertension (high BP) and many long-term illness control there is the need for regular advice and follow up. Just one time consultation or advice is not enough to guide a diabetic in scientifically & medically correct manner. For giving you regular follow up you ask me with all details like your daily eating pattern and medicines you take. I assure you a proper guidance. If you keep in touch personally.

I wanted to know does using treadmill regularly will effect knee joints. For a work out of 10 to 15 min.

MBBS
General Physician, Fatehabad
I wanted to know does using treadmill regularly will effect knee joints. For a work out of 10 to 15 min.
Hi lybrate-user, The treadmill is still one of the more popular pieces of exercise equipment, but while it has some appealing characteristics, it's important to realize that you may be forgoing many important health benefits of exercise if all you're doing is walking or jogging on a treadmill. Yes, repetitive exercise at a sharp incline, such as hill running, can result in patellofemoral stress syndrome -- a painful condition you might refer to as runner's knee. Sharp incline running allows less movement in your ankle joints, meaning your knees have to pick up the slack and take on added impact. As these things go, less movement usually translates to less comfort. Suggestion: If you're not totally scared away by the idea of impact damage and joint stress, and plan to use a treadmill regularly anyway, remember that moderation can be your best friend; don't increase the incline unless you feel comfortable. If it feels wrong, it's probably doing more harm than good. If you experience sharp pains in your knees, stop the exercise, then rest and ice the affected areas. Alternative exercises such as cycling, swimming and elliptical trainers have similar health benefits to running, and they tend to be easier on the joints. Hope this is useful. Good Luck.
