Smoking and Its Effect on Teeth

FWFO, MDS - Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopaedics, BDS

Smoking and Its Effect on Teeth

Smoking is a phenomenon where the smoke emanated from a burning substance, usually tobacco, is inhaled. Smoking is a major cause for multiple diseases such as lung cancer, mouth cancer, blood pressure disorders etc.

Smoking tends to limit the capabilities of the immune system and this makes it easier for various diseases to affect the body. Smoking can lead to problems in the teeth where the gum tissues that attach the bone with the teeth are affected. This may cause the blood flow to the gums to be impaired and affect the functioning of the teeth.

The changes that the teeth undergo due to smoking are -

1. It may increase teeth sensitivity.
2. Smoking causes the teeth to be pulled away from the gums.
3. It can result in swollen and bleeding gums.
4. It may cause pain while chewing food.
5. Bone loss around the jawline occurs in smokers.
6. It can result in stained teeth and bad breath.

Disorders related to the teeth caused by smoking

There are various disorders of the teeth which are directly linked to smoking, they are -

  • Mouth cancer - in this condition tumors are formed in the mouth
  • It can cause plaque to accumulate in the teeth
  • It may cause gum disease that can result in tooth loss
  • It may interfere with healing period of any dental treatment
  • It reduces the success rates of teeth implants
  • Sweeteners present in the tobacco can also cause tooth decay

The effects of smoking on the tooth can be minimized by avoiding smoking altogether. Apart from that, following proper dental hygiene such regular brushing and flossing of the teeth will keep the teeth healthy. Avoiding smoking also reduces chances of lesion leukoplakia (white patches near teeth and gums).

Toothaches can be due to decay, gum infection or sensitivity. Get your teeth x-rayed to determine the cause. Cavities can be filled with or without rct. Gum infection can be treated by scaling and polishing. For sensitivity, use desensitizing toothpaste twice daily. Regarding yellow teeth, everyone doesn't have pearl white teeth. You can go for bleaching.

Sir, bleeding from the gums, especially while brushing is due to collection of food particles and debris over a long time between the tooth and the gums because of which your gums have become inflamed. There is nothing to worry. Please visit a dentist and get a cleaning done. Do not take any medicines for this unless a doctor prescribes them as they may have side effects and they will not help with this problem in any way.

How Breathing Through the Mouth Affects Oral Health in Children

MDS - Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, BDS
Dentist, Hyderabad
How Breathing Through the Mouth Affects Oral Health in Children

Mouth breathing in children is very common and while a kid with open mouth might seem cute, it is not always the case. The parents need to be made aware that a child breathing through the mouth all the time is not normal and it is high time they find a way to manage it.

A little understanding of the effects of the mouth breathing habit on the child's health in general and oral health in particular can be an eye-opener for the parent. For an educated person, there are obvious symptoms, which indicate that the child is a mouth-breather.

These symptoms include:

  1. Dryness of the lips
  2. Crowding of the front teeth
  3. Snoring
  4. Sleeping with the mouth open
  5. Recurrent infections of the airways including sinusitis and middle ear infections
  6. Bad breath

Common causes include:

  1. Chronic nasal obstruction/congestion because of which the child is not able to get enough oxygen through the nose.
  2. Enlarged tonsils or adenoids
  3. Thumb or finger-sucking habit
  4. Recurrent respiratory infections

Effects of mouth breathing on oral health:

Mouth breathing may seem like a harmless habit, but has serious effects on the oral and dental health of the child. Some of them are discussed below.

  1. Dry mouth: A constantly open mouth can lead to drying up of the saliva. This in turn leads to reduced effects of saliva including the flushing effect on the bacteria and the food deposits. This leads to increased chances of tooth decay and gum diseases.
  2. Tooth decay: With reduced saliva, the pH remains acidic for a longer period of time, leading to increased chances of tooth decay.
  3. Gum diseases: Reduced amounts of saliva also leads to increased gum disease and periodontal disease as the bacteria are not removed and have a conducive environment to act upon.
  4. Facial development: A mouth breathing child maintains a different posture than a nose breather. This leads to a narrow and long face, flattened nose, smaller nostrils, reduced facial tone, thin upper lip, pouty upper lip, and a small lower jaw.
  5. Speech: An open mouth causes the tongue to thrust into the palate when talking. This leads to altered pronunciation of some sounds; especially and can cause lisping.
  6. Braces: Mouth breathing causes multiple challenges including prolonged treatment period, inability to close the gaps, reduced stability of the realigned teeth, and increased chances of relapse. The added complication of increased gum disease and tooth decay makes it worse. The habit needs to be corrected first before going in for braces.

If that sounds like a long list, they are not all inclusive. Early intervention in the habit can correct and negate all these effects. Talk to your dentist to know how to help your mouth breathing child.

There are varied reasons for sensitivity. One of the common causes for sensitivity is wearing off of the ename that is the hardest layer of the tooth, for this the treatment depends on the tooth structure loss and which part of the tooth structure is lost. Second most is recession of gums causing exposure of the root surface of tooth can also cause sensitivity. Another thing causing sensitivity is sinus problems. Depending on the cause treatment can be planned. Hence check with the doctor, cause delay in any one of this can cause you trouble.

My mom have follow gums with bad breath, sometimes it gives out blood What should she do.

My mom have follow gums with bad breath, sometimes it gives out blood
What should she do.
•Eat a healthy, balanced diet and avoid eating strongly flavoured or spicy food. •Cut down on sugary food and drink, as it can increase the amount of bacteria in your mouth. •Reduce your alcohol consumption. •Stop smoking. •Cut down on coffee. •Drink plenty of water to help prevent your mouth becoming dry. •Chew sugar-free gum after eating, to stimulate the flow of saliva. This will help clean away any remaining food particles. •Don't use toothpaste to clean your dentures, as it can scratch the surface and cause stains. •Clean your dentures thoroughly using soap and lukewarm water, denture cream or a denture-cleaning tablet. •Use a separate toothbrush to clean your dentures. •Make sure you visit your dentist for regular check-ups. Having regular dental check-ups will ensure that any plaque is removed from your teeth, particularly in areas that are difficult to reach. •Your dentist can recommend the best way to clean your teeth and gums, and point out areas you might be missing. They can also identify any signs of gum disease and ensure early treatment. •Gastritis, lung & sinus infection may also be the cause of bad smell in the mouth. 90% of bad breath is due to a dirty tongue. •If your bad breath is caused by a gastrointestinal problem, such as an H. Pylori infection or gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), you may be referred to a gastroenterologist. •Persistent bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth may be a warning sign of gum (periodontal) disease. Gum disease is caused by the buildup of plaque on teeth. •You may need deep cleaning & fill tooth cavities with artificial enamel filling. Rinse your mouth thoroughly with a mouth wash until then. Advance procedures can be done with laser too. You may consult me in person.

I am 18 years old. I want to ask how do I whiten my tooth either by naturally or medical treatments.
Here is home remedy for brighter teeth--- mix several teaspoons of baking soda with enough fresh lemon juice (or water) to make a paste. Wipe your teeth and any extra saliva off of them with a paper towel. Put a good amount of paste onto your toothbrush and apply. Leave the paste on for 1 minute, then rinse, so as to avoid the acid effecting enamel. If you are using just water you can leave it on for up to 3 minutes. For faster result you can go for teeth bleaching from dentist.

Which toothpaste is good for regular use? For care dental problem. Stop create cavity.

Dentist, Gurgaon
Which toothpaste is good for regular use? For care dental problem. Stop create cavity.
cavity does not depends on goodness of tooth paste but one its use. any Toothpaste used two times a day along with a good quality tooth brush with correct technique can prevent cavity. you do not have to buy any special Toothpaste as now a days all of them contain good fluoride content. do not use tooth powder as they have thicker particles and can abrade your teeth. brush twice a day, specially at night after dinner, rinse your mouth after every meal, floss your teeth, drink lots of water, eat healthy, change your tooth brush every 2-3 months, and visit a dentist every 6 months for regular dental check up.
