I am 36 years old lady suffering with numbness in legs and these days in hands also.

I am 36 years old lady suffering with numbness in legs and these days in hands also.
There are numerous conditions that can cause you to feel numbness and tingling. For example, an insect or animal bite, toxins found in seafood, a migraine headache, or radiation therapy can give you a feeling of pins and needles. An abnormal level of vitamin B-12, potassium, calcium or sodium is another potential cause. In some cases, feelings of numbness and tingling or burning can indicate a serious injury or medical condition. Seek urgent care if you just experienced a back, neck, or head injury or are unable to walk or move. Losing consciousness, even if only for a short time, is also a warning sign that you need medical attention.

Avoid bending forwards and try squatting instead if you need to reach something at a lower surface. Start with tummy tucking exercise and extension exercises of the back like prone on elbows or hands, hip extension exercises.

I have a meniscus tear of my knee. Is there any cure to this or any remedy other than operation as my knee gets blocked and is very painful.

A torn meniscus is like a loose body in the knee. So ideally it should be either fixed or taken out. It's a short procedure and I can assure you that usually you can start walking after 1-2 days of its taken out. If it is repaired/stitched then it takes a long time for recovery. I would suggest you don't waste time and get it done as every time your knee gets locked it causes damage to your knee cartilage.

Requires detailed examination and investigation. Preliminary investigations suggested: hb, tlc, dlc, esr, blood sugar fasting & pp, uric acid vit d urine r/e x-ray of the affected part. Anyway it may be tried sleep on a hard bed with soft bedding on it. Spring beds, folding beds or thick mattress are harmful use no pillow under the head. Do hot fomantation paracetamol 250mg od & sos x 5days. Caldikind plus 1tab od x10. Do neck, back, knee & general exercises. It may have to be further investigated. Do not ignore it. Let it not become beginning of a bigger problem. Make sure that patient is not allergic to any of the medicines that he/she is going to take. If it does not give relief in 4-5days, inform.

After running for few minutes my ankle starts paining. My age is 16. What may be the problem?

After running for few minutes my ankle starts paining. My age is 16. What may be the problem?
Hi ~stop running till pain subsides ~use elastic bandages (such as an ace bandage) to wrap your ankle. ~wear a brace to support your ankle. ~use crutches for walking till swelling and pain subsides. ~keep your foot raised above your heart with pillows when resting or sleeping to reduce swelling. ~get plenty of rest and do not put weight on your ankle. Still you don't get relief than visit physiotherapist as physical examination /xray may be required for further investigation. Do reply for detailed treatment plan. Wishing you a good health.

I am 55 years old female. I am having left leg calf pain when I get up after sitting for some time. I also get cramps also on the same leg calf muscles at times. What is the reason.

MCh Ortho, ATLS (AIIMS), Diploma In Orthopaedics (D. Ortho), MBBS, MS - Orthopaedics

It is frequently due to vitamin and calcium deficiency. Sometimes it may also be due to improper blood circulation in your leg. Take vitamin supplements, fresh fruits, plenty of water daily. Consult an orthopedic surgeon if your condition does not improve.

Hot packs are very effective as they dilate blood vessels and increase blood flow, delivering needed nutrients and oxygen to cells in the area being heated, aiding the removal of cell waste and promoting healing.

All About Shoulder Dislocation

M. Ch. (Ortho), MS - Orthopaedics, MBBS
Orthopedist, Delhi
All About Shoulder Dislocation

A shoulder dislocation is a shoulder injury which is characterized by the upper arm bone popping out of the socket of your shoulder blade. The shoulder joint is the most mobile among all the joints in the body, making it the most prone to dislocation. The dislocation of the shoulder joint can either be partial or complete depending on the injury. In a partial dislocation, the head of the upper arm is partially shifted out of the socket whereas in a complete dislocation, the head comes out of the socket in its entirety.

Symptoms-

The symptoms of shoulder dislocation are:

  1. Swelling or bruising of the affected area.

  2. Deformed shoulder.

  3. Excruciating pain in the shoulder region.

  4. Mobility of the joint is greatly reduced.

Apart from these symptoms, there may be tingling, numbness and weakness in the affected region.

Causes-

There can be multiple ways in which a shoulder can be dislocated because of its ability to move and swing in all the directions. The fibrous tissues that connect the bones of your shoulder may also get stretched or torn. These injuries occur due to a sudden blow or a strong force exerted on the shoulder joint.

It is caused by:

  1. Trauma to the Shoulder Joint: Hard blows to the shoulder joint such as one suffered from a vehicle accident can lead to shoulder dislocation.

  2. Sports Injuries: In contact sports such as hockey and football, the sudden forceful contractions of the shoulder region may lead to dislocation of the shoulder.

  3. Falls: Tripping or falling from an elevated place and landing on the shoulder can cause shoulder joint dislocation.

Treatment-

The treatments for shoulder dislocation are –

  1. Medication: Medications such as pain relievers can be prescribed by the doctor to reduce pain.

  2. Surgery: Surgery of the shoulder joint can help in treating chronic shoulder dislocations. Surgery is also required if the blood vessels or the nerves along the shoulder joint are damaged.

  3. Immobilization: This process involves attaching a sling or a splint to the affected area to prevent it from moving. This allows the shoulder joint to heal and recuperate faster.

Hunching over a desk is a leading reason why people end up with crippling back pain at some point in their lives. But a few simple changes in the way you work can make your pain go away. 1-while sitting Keep your head up; Focus on aligning your head and neck right above your shoulders; avoid straining forward. 2-Be choosy with your chair: Pick one that allows your lower back to rest against a lumbar support. Then tilt the back of the chair so it’s very slightly reclined. 3-Plant your feet: Keep them flat on the floor and shoulder-width apart to quiet tension in your knees and ankles. 4-Take breaks: Getting up at least once an hour— just do some shoulder rolls—reduces pressure on spinal disks and boosts circulation. If your back pain is severe please go to a Physiotherapist for detail assessment and management of your pain. Best wishes.
