How to increase breast milk in quantity for baby? Any medicine or any natural remedy.

MBBS, Diploma in Child Health (DCH), Pediatric Gastroenterology
Pediatrician, Delhi
Many people ask this question in a mistaken belief that the milk production in the mother is less. Most often it is not true. If the baby is passing plenty of urine, 5-6 semi formed stools per day and if the baby is gaining weight, the breast milk is sufficient. However to ensure good supply of milk, the mother must feed the baby often to ensure the" let down reflex" which happens only when the baby suckles. Drink plenty of water and take frequent small nutritious meals.(extra calories 300-500, in form of ghee, butter are helpful. Stop worrying. Stress reduces milk production. Have sufficient privacy, nurse the baby in peace. Methi dana, zeera plenty of dal and vegetables and fruits will do the trick. Enjoy the feeding, don't treat it as a burden. Take help from an experienced person.

My son age is 10 but he did not drink milk daily. Sometime he drink boost with milk. Is this good ? Please suggest which one is good ?

MD - Paediatrics, MBBS
Pediatrician, Tumkur
Even if he is not consuming milk if he is taking vegetables rich in calcium like cabbage, broccoli etc it's enough. Boost can be added to milk if he likes. You can also give calcium tablets.

My 4 years old daughter generally use to have cold on and off. What should I do ?

MD - Paediatrics, MBBS
Pediatrician, Tumkur
If it's not associated with fever it's likely to be due to allergy. Then it needs avoidance of allergens and symptomatic treatment.

My 6 and half month old baby is doing green colored motions frequently. What should I do?

MD - Paediatrics, MBBS
Pediatrician, Tumkur
Colour is not an issue. If the stool consistency is loose and more than 3 times in a day you must take care of hydration and continue breastfeeding.
