BP needs low salt diet.Total diet should be what your body needs based on your energy expenditure. Diabetes affects all organs in the body ? Eyes, kidneys, nerves, reproductive system all are affected, In fact, from toe to hair. For diabetic control, patient should be under proper guidance for regular follow up and advice. It is not as easy task to control blood sugar in the desired normal range. Whatever we eat is metabolised to sugar in the body to provide energy for our daily activities. For the absolute control, one has to monitor his / her blood sugar at regular intervals (Self-Monitoring of Blood glucose ? SMBG). Though difficult, this can be done by a glucometer and keep a record. Get an idea of Fasting sugar (FBS) and 2 hours after food (PPBS), & HbA1C (inform me) and check before dinner and after every major food. The basic idea is to reduce the food intake to 1/3 of what you take now. The dictum of sugar control is diet, exercise, diet + medicine and at later stage medicine+ Insulin will be needed. There are different diet plans of varying calories for each person depending on his activity & lifestyle.

Hello. My mother is suffering from Thyroid with TSH= 12.0. What kind of problem is this? Is it possible to completely cure this problem? Or lifetime medications? I got no reply about the period of medications. Kindly brief me about the pattern of problem and medications. Thank you.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
Hello, Thanks for the query. With TSH 12.0 mU/L, she has hypothyroidism. This needs to be treated with Levothyroxine. Dosage has to be decided on the basis of TSH, T4 value and her body weight. Treatment has to be for lifetime. If not treated it can lead to multiple problems like weight gain, cold intolerance, slow heart rate, tiredness, early fatigue, muscle and joint pains, anxiety, depression, dry skin, dry hair and hair fall and menstrual problems. Early initiation of treatment is necessary. On treatment TSH should be maintained between 3 to 4 mU/L. If you have any doubts please come back. Thanks.

A common treatment is to replace thyroxine with a specific synthetic thyroid hormone (levothyroxine). This hormone is safe and affordable, but determining the right dosage often takes time. Your metabolic rate has to be returned to normal. Raising it too quickly can cause palpitations and make some medical problems like coronary artery disease and atrial fibrillation worse. Symptoms of thyroid hormone excess are: shakiness or tremors palpitations insomnia increased appetite diets rich in soy and high fiber can interfere with levothyroxine absorption. Medications and supplements also can reduce absorption. These include: calcium supplements iron supplements cholestyramine aluminum hydroxide (present in some antacids)

Dear Lybrateuser, - To control your blood sugar have more of fibrous food vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, beans, sprouts, nuts - have 4-5 small meals rather than three large meals, have a light dinner with protein food in it & vegetables, take a walk for 10-15 min after dinner, have a well balanced diet with controlled portion from all the food groups as not having a particular group will lead to deficiency disease & metabolic imbalance - control weight with diet & exercise + sleep well for at least 7-8 hrs at night, keep sleep & wake up time fixed.

I have diabetes. I am trying to control it but its increasing day by day. What can i do?

I have diabetes. I am trying to control it but its increasing day by day. What can i do?
Following are the tips to prevent onset/or control diabetes 1-losing extra weight:-is the most significant thing which can make a big difference to your health. It helps lower your blood pressure and cholesterol too. Waist of more than 80 cm in women & 90 cm in man are at risk 2- constant and regular food timings:- it will improve your metabolic activity and helps reducing your weight. 3- split your meals and eating in moderate amount:-splitting your meals into 3-4 times per day (including snacks) and eating in fair amount, improves your metabolic rate as the food you take is not concentrated at one time. 4- no long gaps and skipping of meals:-never miss out breakfast. 5- no overeating:-never eat in a bulk on one time remember to eat your food slowly, chew well. 6- proper exercise and work outs:-exercise is a fast way to trim down calories, extra weight and controlling glucose level. Brisk walking for 30 min. Atleast five times a week is the best. You can also try cycling, swimming, dancing. Timings for exercise should be fixed and regular. Do not eat right away after a workout. 7-constant and regular timings for medication 8-avoid fried foods, meat, fats and sweets. 9- take high-fibre and complex carbohydrates:-like oats. Add whole grain foods in your diet. Avoid white bread, pasta, pizza, candies, and snacks. Instead include high-fiber carbohydrates like wheat bran, flaxseed and methi seeds to your wheat flour. This will increase fibre in your diet. 10-drink enough fluids:-keep your body well hydrated. 11. Fresh vegetables and fruits:- these contain a lot of minerals as well as nutrients. Include sprouts in the diet as they are easily digestible.

Mr. Lybrate-user, it appears you have fairly severe hypothyroidism. You have not mentioned what is the t4 and t3 level. Other parameters look with in the range. To treat hypothyroidism you have to start on thyroxine tablets. 10 mcg is too low a dose. It has to be begin with 50 to 75 mcg, then check tsh level after 6 weeks and then if level has come down to the expected extent continue the same dose. Thanks.

Hello, I'm 28 years old girl from delhi. I'm having insulin resistance but my blood sugar level normal it's not high ...
Please check: 1) HbA1c 2) Serum insulin level (both fasting and PP) 3) OGTT (5samples) Above test will tell you whether you are diabetic or pre diabetic or normal. Slow healing may be due to either diabetes or any other causes which lower immunity.

One at a time.1) Malaria is a fever and parasite causing it is transmitted through bite of mosquito, there is No human to human transmission. Diabetes is abnormally high levels of sugar in the blood , extra sugar comes out of body through urine and damages the kidneys and other organs including heart and blood vessels. DM is of 3 types , juvenile or type 1- young are affected, Type 2 , elders are affected 3) gestational-pregnant women are affected. Diabetes is due to less insulin produced by an organ called pancreas in the abdomen. Type 1 & 3 are controlled by injections of Insulin only ,All 3 require diet therapy along with medicines . Your 3rd query is about heart attack blockage in artery due to cholesterol something ?? Yes high levels of cholesterol are responsible for causing blockages in blood vessels but this is One of the important causes. Rest of the causes - get back here with your doubts .

How to Have Better Sex With Diabetes?

MBBS
Sexologist, Jaipur
How to Have Better Sex With Diabetes?

Diabetes has always been a mysterious home to many diseases. It reduces quality of erection. However, there are ways you can enhance your love life, by involving some strategies, such as:

  1. Approach sex like exercise: This helps prevent dreaded blood sugar lows.If you use insulin, check your blood sugar before sex and have a snack if it's low.
  2. Just go with it: Planning can be helpful, but don't sweat it if sex just happens. There's no reason not to grab the opportunity if it pops up just because you haven't followed your diabetes exercise routine.
  3. Use a lubricant: If you are a woman with vaginal dryness, a vaginal lubricant can make sex feel better. Ask your doctor about using one regularly, not just during sex.
  4. Prepare a sex arsenal kit: Keep anything you might need for optimal sex next to the bed.If you're a woman, you may want to have a lubricant in your kit. Feel free to include massage oils.
  5. Get a room: Treat yourself and your partner to a night at a local hotel. It's a great libido enhancer.Plan it days in advance. It's planning, but it's planning something fun.
  6. Get in some practice: If you are a man who uses a device like a vacuum pump or constriction band to help with erectile dysfunction, take time to learn how to use it right.
  7. Creativity is sexy: If you have trouble getting aroused, stretch beyond your go-to bedroom moves. Try out new positions. Explore different ways to climax. Most women don't climax from intercourse alone, anyway. Some men can have an orgasm from prostate stimulation.
  8. Limit alcohol: A little alcohol may boost your desire, but drinking can also make your blood sugar level drop quickly. If you drink alcohol, you might sip some champagne during intimacy.
  9. Get help for emotional issues: depression, anxiety, poor self-image, and other emotional concerns can hurt your sex life. And if you have a partner, sex troubles can put stress on your relationship.
  10. Relax: How you feel about your diabetes can set the stage for sex. With diabetes, you have to expect the unexpected.

You can think of a formula in your mind for better, increased, steamier sex life. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Sexologist.

Mr. lybrate-user, If the patient is regularly taking prescribed medicine and also following diet restriction and exercise schedule, then blood glucose does come down. That is what is seen with the patient. It means due to current medication diabetes is under control. But to remain in that good control, treatment has to be continued for lifetime. Plus periodic check ups should also be done. If you stop medication now, blood glucose levels will go high and can cause severe problems. Thanks.
