Mr. Lybrate-user, thyroid is small gland present in all of us, located on the cricoid cartilage in the front of throat, a butterfly shaped gland. This secretes hormone thyroxine, necessary for development and functioning of brain, and for all vital metabolic activities. Deficiency causes hypothyroidism, leading to weight gain, slow heart rate, intolerance to cold, early fatigue, tiredness, difficulty in speech, inability to concentrate, menstrual irregularities in women, infertility, dry skin. Dry hair, hair fall and anxiety and depression. Excess activity of the gland causes hyperthyroidism, leading to weight loss, agitation, rapid heart rate, palpitation, protrusion of eyes, excess sweating, intolerance to heat etc. Both these conditions can only be controlled by proper treatment. There is no cure.

What should be the symptoms to avoid diabetes and please explain the precautions for diabetes.
Individuals can experience different signs and symptoms of diabetes, and sometimes there may be no signs. Some of the signs commonly experienced include: Frequent urination Excessive thirst Increased hunger-even though you are eating Weight loss - even though you are eating more Tiredness Lack of interest and concentration A tingling sensation or numbness or persistant pain in the hands or feet Blurred vision Frequent infections Slow-healing wounds Vomiting and stomach pain (often mistaken as the flu) Extreme fatigue Early detection and treatment of diabetes can decrease the risk of developing the complications of diabetes.Following are the tips to prevent onset/or control diabetes 1-Control Diabetes by Losing Weight:-The most significant thing which can make a big difference to your health is to lose your extra weight.This will not only lower your blood pressure but also helps lowering your cholesterol too. For woman:waist of 80 cm or more & for man:waist of 90 cm or more are at risk 2- Constant and regular food timings :-the timings at which you have your meals should be set fixed and at regular intervals each day. This will considerably improve your metabolic activity and helps reducing your weight. 3- Split your meals and eating in moderate amount:-Spliting your meals into 3-4 times per day (including snacks)and eating in fair and consistent amount , improves ur metabolic rate as the food u take is not concentrated at one time. 4- No long Gaps and skipping of meals:-There should be no long gaps between meals.Never miss out breakfast. 5- No overeating:-Never eat in a bulk on one time .Try to have moderate amount of food each time u eat.It will help maintain your blood sugar at a healthy level and wont let it to fluctuate.Remember to eat your food slowly, chew well. 6- Proper Exercise and work outs:-Exercise is very important and a fast way to trim down calories ,extra weight and controlling glucose level.Brisk walking for 30 min.atleast five times a week is the best and easiest way of excersicing.You can also try Cycling,swimming,dancing.Timings for exercise should be fixed and regular.Avoid heavy exercise.Do not eat right away after a workout . 7-constant and regular timings for medication 8-Avoid fried foods and meat:Limit fats and sweets.Rather choose a variety of foods including whole grains, fresh vegetables, salads, fruits, low fat dairy products. 9- Take high-fiber and complex carbohydrates:-as they are easily broken down to basic sugars. Add whole grain foods in your diet.Avoid carbohydrates like white bread, pasta, pizza , candies, and snacks.Instead include high-fiber carbohydrates like wheat bran,flaxseed and methi seeds to your wheatflour.This will increase fibre in your diet. 10-Drink enough fluids:-Keep your body well hydrated.Drink a lot of water that will help flush the toxins off your system. 11.Fresh vegetables and fruits:- gives essential benefits as these contain a lot of vital minerals as well as nutrients .Include sprouts in the diet as they are easily digestible and a rich source of nutrients. 12- Avoid excess salt:-in form of pickles/papads etc..just 1 tsp(5 gm)is sufficient for a healthy diabetic hypertensive individual. 13-Avoid alcohol consumption:-Alcohols such as beer and wine contains large amount of calories .choose sugar-free drink. 14- dairy products :-Dairy products are high on fat content such as cheese, curd, milk etc.So instead consume skimmed milk products , low fat cheese, yogurt (curd) etc.Do not have more than two cups of tea or coffee every day.Try green tea instead.

Take diet low in proteins, no non- vegetarian food, no eggs, avoid dairy products, do not take beans- like rajmah. You can take vegetables but not beans and spinach. Take tablet pirox dt twice daily for pain tablet zyloric 100 twice daily till your uric acid level comes down.

Diet restriction, daily exercise like walking for 40 min and various medicines - oral - according to your levels of fbs and ppbs with hba1c is ideal remedy. There is no treatment to cure permanently but one can control level of diabetes mellitus. Consult doctor at your city in person.

Please get your hemoglobin checked, because it is possible you may have anaemia, which could be the reason for tiredness. If there is no anaemia detected, then please eat adequate diet with proteins like eggs and a lot green vegetables. You also must be aware that in hypothyroidism one should avoid soya containing products, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, mustard and coffee as these items affect treatment. Please inform the hb level.

The exact cause is not known. The following are the risk factor 1. Heredity 2. Obesity, 3. Stress 4. Smoking 5. Lack of exercise, 6. Sedentary life style diabetes can be associated with hypertension, weak eye sight and joint pain in some patients, but it is not always.

Hello doctor, I am diabetic for the last 12 years. I am 63 years old. My recent sugar levels are FBG 120 mg PPBG 140. HBA1c is 6.2. I am taking daily one table glyciphage 500 mg before breakfast, one tablet before lunch and one tablet before dinner which is prescribed by my doctor. In addition, I am also taking Telvas 40 mg for BP and one tablet of Calchek-5 and one vitamin tablet. Daily I will go for walking for 40 minutes. Though I am fond of sweets I am always remember I am diabetic. Kindly advise me what precautions I have to take.

Hi, The precautions to be followed are as follows: - Avoid all whites like rice, sugar, maida, etc. - Eat in small quantities 4-5 servings per day. - Walk daily for 1 hour. - Avoid intake of oil fried food and sweets. - Take medicines prescribed by the doctor regularly. - Visit your doctor regularly for follow up check-ups. - Get your sugar levels checked once in a month and try to keep it under control. - Get rid of mental tensions and worries. - Be active always and avoid sedentary life style. - Perform yoga and meditation to keep your mind calm. - Consume lot of fiber in your diet which lowers your cholesterol levels.

Reasons To Eat Walnuts Daily

Walnuts belong to the tree nut family, along with brazil nuts, cashews, hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, pecans, pine nuts, and pistachios. Each has its own unique nutritional profile.

One-quarter cup of walnuts, for instance, provides more than 100 percent of the daily recommended value of plant-based omega-3 fats, along with high amounts of copper, manganese, molybdenum, and biotin. Some of the most exciting research about walnuts includes:

1. Cancer-fighting properties

Walnuts may help reduce not only the risk of prostate cancer, but breast cancer as well. In one study, mice that ate the human equivalent of 2.4 ounces of whole walnuts for 18 weeks had significantly smaller and slower-growing prostate tumors compared to the control group that consumed the same amount of fat but from other sources.

Overall the whole walnut diet reduced prostate cancer growth by 30 to 40 percent. According to another study on mice, the human equivalent of just two handfuls of walnuts a day cut breast cancer risk in half, and slowed tumor growth by 50 percent as well. 1

2. Heart health

Walnuts contain the amino acid l-arginine, which offers multiple vascular benefits to people with heart disease, or those who have increased risk for heart disease due to multiple cardiac risk factors.

If you struggle with herpes, you may want to avoid or limit walnuts, as high levels of arginine can deplete the amino acid lysine, which can trigger herpes recurrences.

Walnuts also contain the plant-based omega-3 fat alpha-linolenic acid (ala), which is anti-inflammatory and may prevent the formation of pathological blood clots. Research shows that people who eat a diet high in ala are less likely to have a fatal heart attack and have a nearly 50 percent lower risk of sudden cardiac death. 2

Eating just four walnuts a day has been shown to significantly raise blood levels of heart-healthy ala, 3 and walnut consumption supports healthful cholesterol levels.

Separate research showed that eating just one ounce of walnuts a day may decrease cardiovascular risk, 4 and among those at high cardiovascular risk, increased frequency of nut consumption significantly lowers the risk of death. 5

3. Rare and powerful antioxidants

Antioxidants are crucial to your health, as they are believed to help control how fast you age by combating free radicals, which are at the heart of age-related deterioration.

Walnuts contain several unique and powerful antioxidants that are available in only a few commonly eaten foods. This includes the quinone juglone, the tannin tellimagrandin, and the flavonol morin. 6

Walnuts contain antioxidants that are so powerful at free-radical scavenging that researchers called them" remarkable" 7 and research has shown that walnut polyphenols may help prevent chemically-induced liver damage. 8

In another study, researchers found that nuts, especially walnuts, have potent antioxidant powers. Walnut polyphenols had the best efficacy among the nuts tested and also the highest lipoprotein-bound antioxidant activity. The researchers concluded: 9

" nuts are high in polyphenol antioxidants which by binding to lipoproteins would inhibit oxidative processes that lead to atherosclerosis in vivo. In human supplementation studies nuts have been shown to improve the lipid profile, increase endothelial function and reduce inflammation, all without causing weight gain"

4. Weight control

Adding healthful amounts of nuts such as walnuts to your diet can help you to maintain your ideal weight over time. In one review of 31 trials, those whose diets included extra nuts or nuts substituted for other foods lost about 1.4 extra pounds and half an inch from their waists. 10 eating walnuts is also associated with increased satiety after just three days. 11

5. Improved reproductive health in men

One of the lesser-known benefits of walnuts is their impact on male fertility. Among men who consume a western-style diet, adding 75 grams (a bit over one-half cup) of walnuts daily significantly improved sperm quality, including vitality, motility, and morphology. 12

6. Brain health

Walnuts contain a number of neuroprotective compounds, including vitamin e, folate, melatonin, omega-3 fats, and antioxidants. Research shows walnut consumption may support brain health, including increasing inferential reasoning in young adults. 13

One study also found that consuming high-antioxidant foods like walnuts" can decrease the enhanced vulnerability to oxidative stress that occurs in aging" increase health span" and also" enhance cognitive and motor function in aging" 14

7. Diabetes

The beneficial dietary fat in walnuts has been shown to improve metabolic parameters in people with type 2 diabetes. Overweight adults with type 2 diabetes who ate one-quarter cup of walnuts daily had significant reductions in fasting insulin levels compared to those who did not, and the benefit was achieved in the first three months. 15.

Sir, actually what I'd suggest you is proper personal hygiene as my doubt would be with regards to Candidial infection, as you have quoted that your wife suffers from itching soon after your sexual act with her. More of concern is the Diabetic status as Diabetes itself is an Immunicompromised state and fungal infection like candidiasis can harbor the external genitals. So,Good control of Blood sugar values with proper hygiene is suffice to get rid of your issues.

Are you suffering from diabetes? If yes, then it’s time for you to be extra careful about your health. Diabetes may cause several other diseases as well. You must check your lifestyle and take efforts to get rid of diabetes as soon as possible. If you have diabetes, then youu are at risk of developing nerve damages (neuropathy), vascular injuries and other heart diseases, regardless of your age, sex or other external or internal factors. Diabetes patients must strive to maintain fasting blood glucose levels less than 110 mg/dL and hemoglobin HbA1C level less than 7%. Also, diabetes patients should keep a check on blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

Here’s how diabetes can affect your overall health:
There is a correlation between blood pressure, cholesterol levels and diabetes. Researchers have found that high bad cholesterol levels act as hindrance to insulin regulation. People with diabetes are more likely to develop heart-related diseases. About 60% diabetes patients die due to heart attacks. Diabetes is responsible for hardening of arteries or atherosclerosis. This situation is dangerous and can cause heart attacks, strokes or other chronic diseases.

Diabetes leads to impaired nerve function. This is called neuropathy. This condition is of two types: Peripheral (affects toes, feet, legs, hand, and arms) and Autonomic (affects digestion, bowel, bladder, heart and sexual activity). Symptoms of neuropathy include tingling, weakness, burning sensation, numbness in the limbs, digestive disorders, infection of the bladder and erectile dysfunction.

Diabetes is responsible for causing damage to the kidneys as well. This is called nephropathy. In this condition, the filters in the kidney or glomeruli get damaged. As a result, there is a leakage of protein in the urine. Consequently, kidneys get damaged. Urine showing small amounts of protein is an indication of kidney damage. About 20-40% patients suffering from diabetes die due to renal failure. The symptoms of renal disorder due to diabetes include itching, fatigue, urine with protein, swelling of feet and ankles and pale skin colour.

Diabetes causes non-injury amputations as it affects the nerve in the limbs, especially foot. Usually, minor infections in the foot may lead to ulcers and later require amputation. In rare cases, charcot joint or charcot foot may also occur. This is called neuropathic arthropathy. The symptoms include swelling and reddening of the foot. The bones of the affected foot have a tendency to develop cracks, deforming the entire region. Diabetes leads to blindness in adults. The eye disorder caused due to diabetes is called retinopathy. Patients with diabetes develop cataract easily. The capillaries and blood vessels in the retina get damaged or obstructed, resulting in damage to the entire retina.

Ayurvedic remedies for diabetes:

  1. Plan your diet as it is one of the most important thing in order to manage your diabetes. One must take balanced diet. But avoid foods increasing the Kapha Dosha. These include sugar, fats, potatoes, rice. You must avoid alcohol
  2. Take the help of physical exercises or yoga to stay fit.
  3. Check your weight.
  4. Don’t sleep during daytime.
