Lybrate-user, half an hour walking is bare minimum, that is required. However, if you can do exercise for 1 hour a day, that will benefit in achieving better control of blood glucose. Simple brisk walking is as good as any other exercise. If want to start yogic asanas, that is good, but in addition to walking. Plus maintain a strict dietary control. Thanks.

What is the problem in flue and what causes hashimoto's thyroiditis, and what is the best method of treatment?

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
What is the problem in flue and what causes hashimoto's thyroiditis, and what is the best method of treatment?
Mr. Lybrate-user, influenza (flu), is a self limiting viral infection of upper respiratory tract. It can cause fever, (some times high fever) severe body ache including low back pain and joint pains, upper respiratory symptoms like running nose, sore throat and cough. There is hardly any sputum. Disease runs a short course of 4 to 5 days. But recovery is slow. Hashimoto's thyroiditis is an autoimmune disorder of thyroid gland where there are antibodise produced against thyroid peroxidase enzyme (anti tpo ab). These antibodies destroy thyroxine producing cells in the gland that results in thyroxine deficiency - hypothyroidism. The gland is filled with lymphocytes and may look globular and firm. One of the cause is said to be excess iodine intake through iodinated salt. Treatment is to start thyroxine tablets and take them for life time. This is the commonest cause of hypothyroidism in usa.

Nothing to worry, homoeopathy is the permanent solution for hypothyroidism. Is there any family history of thyroid problems? Better to avoid cabbage and cauliflower along with medicines.

Obesity - How It Increases Your Risk of Different Diseases?

MBBS, MD MEDICINE, DM - Gastroenterology

Obesity - How It Increases Your Risk of Different Diseases?

The new epidemic that has taken the world by storm is obesity. The proportion of obese people is increasing and the age of onset of obesity is decreasing gradually. There is an optimal weight for a given height of a person. Obesity is when a person's weight is 20% more than the optimal weight. It brings with it a host of other health conditions, as it impairs the body’s overall functioning.

  1. Diabetes 2: In a normal person, food gets broken down into glucose to provide the required energy for the body using insulin. The body’s inability to produce sufficient insulin to convert the excessive amount of sugar in the body leads to diabetes. Growing to be a leading cause of early death, diabetes brings with it a host of complications affecting almost all systems and parts of the body including stroke, kidney disease, blindness, and death. Diabetes and obesity have a direct correlation and can be prevented and managed by eating a balanced diet, losing weight, exercising, and having a healthy lifestyle.
  2. Heart problems: An increased BMI also ups the risk for coronary heart disease (CHD), where the blood vessels are narrowed due to constant accumulation of fat in their inner walls. This gradually reduces the blood flow through these and may when complete cut-off happens, it could result in heart attack or stroke, affecting the heart or the brain. There could also be cases where the heart fails to pump sufficient blood to the rest of the body, affecting their effective functioning. Obese people also have a higher blood pressure than people who maintain a good BMI.
  3. Breathing problems: One of the main causes of labored breathing is excessive weight. The condition called sleep apnea which is sudden bouts of absence of breathing during sleep is very high in obesity. It can cause snoring, daytime sleepiness, increase the risk of heart disease and stroke. In people with sleep apnea, weight loss is one of the first and most recommended therapies. Asthma and general breathing disorders are also higher in obese people.
  4. Abnormal body cholesterol: Obese people also tend to have abnormally higher levels of body fat, especially the bad cholesterol, which again leads to coronary disease. It is a vicious cycle with one leading to the other and aggravating the other.
  5. Osteoarthritis: Added weight leads to pressure on the hips, knees and lower back. There is added wear and tear and pain, which further limits movement.
  6. Cancer: Some cancers, of the colon, endometrium, kidney, pancreas, gallbladder, breast and esophagus are more prevalent in obese people.

These are just some, there are more. The best way to avoid all these is to watch your weight. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor.

There are many lifestyle and dietary guidelines that can be followed to protect against future flares or prevent gout or uric acid problems from occurring in the first instance: maintain a high fluid intake (2-4 liters a day) avoid alcohol maintain a healthy body weight eat a balanced diet limit fish, meat and poultry intake. If attempting to lose weight, avoid low-carbohydrate diets. If carbohydrate intake is insufficient, the body is unable to burn its own fat properly, releasing substances called ketones into the bloodstream. This results in a condition called ketosis that can increase the level of uric acid in the blood. It is most important to avoid foods that are high in purines, to ensure that the levels of uric acid in the blood do not get too high. Here is a list of high-purine foods to be wary of: beef kidneys brains dried beans and peas liver mackerel mushrooms lose some weight by walking or other exercise, avoid meats and get always be on a prescribed diet as prescribed by a registered dietitian. I am a registered dietitian, certified diabetes educator and a doctor, consult privately for detailed treatment plans using diet and medications.

Synvisc is not a steroid. It's natural sugar for lubrication. Also sometimes other steroidal injections are given. Best is knee replacement. But the hba1c is on the higher side, please keep her sugar in control. Also send me other reports in private chat and I will send a prescription of excellent medicines that will help her immediately. Steroids can't be given in your wife's case because they will increase the sugar levels. So medicine has to be given very carefully. Please consult me for further treatment.

Protect your hands. Protection is key. Wear rubber or latex gloves when you're exposed to irritants. Choose ones that are lined with cotton. The key is to wash gently. Opt for warm water -- hot water strips the skin of its natural, protecting oils. The tops of dry hands are especially parched. Some dermatologists suggest scrubbing just your palms when washing if your hands are particularly dry. Petroleum jelly (petrolatum), mineral oil, and lanolin, all of which trap water in the skin
