I have been found diabetic from one year. I consulted a MD and he prescribed metformin+ glimepiride tabs. After two months he prescribed only metformin SR 500. From then I am using them. After first report I never go beyond fasting 110 and PP 130 in several tests. I quit sweet taste from a year. My question is can I consume any fruit in some small quantity? Is there any problem if I drink tea with sugar occasionally?

Hello, Yes you can have results in fact high fiber content fruits will help you manage your blood sugar levels better. Tea can be taken by cutting down half amount of sugar, which you generally use. Add ginger, mint, cardamon to your tea, to compensate on the taste of sweet tea.

Hello Your HbA1C value is very good. Which means your blood sugar is under good control because your taking the tablet. If you stop it, blood sugars will increase. Maybe after 3 months if your HbA1C reduces further, instead of stopping the medicine, dosage should be reduced.

Hello sir. My mom (46 years) had thyroid problem from the past 30 years & diabetes for past 7 years. But nowadays the thyroid is not working properly and then the TSH value is only 0.02 so we consult a thyroid specialist and he said to take THYRONORM 125 MCG (mon-fri, THYRONORM 100 MCG (sat-sun). Then the blood sugar (F) is 177 mgs & the blood sugar (PP) is 265 so he advised to take MIXTARD, AFOGLIP 20, HOSTID D3, LOYD 60K capsule & GLYCOMET gp 1 MG tablet. This medicine is enough or we need to take any treatment for this?

lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. When one is on thyroxine treatment for hypothyroidism, with adequate dose, all the symptoms are in good control. Adequate dose helps to maintain TSH <3 mU/L. If TSH goes below 0.1 mU/L, then there may be symptoms related to high levels of T4. Since you have mentioned TSH level as 0.002 mU/L, it is low, may cause problems related to excess thyroxine hormone. To me it appears that dose of thyroxine is more, needs to be reduced so as to maintain TSH level. You blood glucose levels both fasting & Pp are high. You are taking Insulin, Tenelegliptin, Metformin with Glimiperide (dosage of Insulin is not mentioned,). These are quite a few drugs to help control blood glucose. Ideally FBG should be <100 mg, PP 150 to 160 mg & HbA1c% <6.8, then one remains free from problems of diabetes. If you have any doubts please do come back. Thanks.

Male fertility surgery

Microsurgery

Male microsurgery also involves specialised operative techniques for the repair of very small structures, such as the tubes that carry sperm (the vas deferens). It is commonly used where there is a low sperm count, or no sperm at all.

Microsurgery can be used to:

  • reverse a Vasectomy
  • bypass a blockage in the epididymis,
  • cure a Varicocele (swelling of the veins about the testis), which allows the testis to produce better sperm,
  • In the case of azoospermia (absence of sperm in the testes), microsurgery is also used to perform surgical sperm retrieval so it can be used for Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI). The genetic make up of the sperm is tested first, before fertility treatment.

Most microsurgery is done as a day surgery procedure, and you will need up to a week to recover after the procedure. Occasionally we can cure obstruction to sperm passage in the urinary tract.

Yes some women do give up on life at 60 plus. Do tell her that women get a new life after menopause. Regarding diabetes, there are plenty like her showing good control with diet and medicine. Having less teeth is one of the ageing process. Depend on liquid nourishing food and calories or get her a good set of dentures. Heart surgery or procedures are carried out on diabetics with great success. Take her to a heart hospital and let her talk with few recovered patients so that her confidence levels are high before she goes for any procedures. Good luck.

Hello, Thanks for the query. Blood glucose fasting 123 mg, means you are in the pre-diabetic stage. It means if you take adequate care, adapt a changed lifestyle, maintain normal body weight and BMI, exercise regularly, avoid sweets, junk foods, pastries and bakery itmes, colas and deep fried foods, then you can prevent or postpone progressing to wards developing diabetes. Your BMI is 26.51 kgs/M2 (normal <23 kgs). Your ideal body weight should be 56 kgs. It means diet control and regular exercise are needs of the day. Thanks.

Control diabets (as your levels are still high). Diabetics are known to have sex problems. Also get a cardiac work up done. If all are normal and still the problem persists, then get a check up by sexologist and take drugs. Don't take drugs shown in tv as they may not be safe for your health.

Mr. Lybrate-user, it is seen that after quiting smoking some weight increase occurs. However, if you have diabetes then regular exercise must have been advised. If you had continued that plus diet control the weight would have remained in check. It essential to control weight for sugar control. If you have no discomfort in exercising then do regular workout and reduce the weight.

What are the symptoms of diabetes at initial stage? How to be careful from such diseases kindly guide me.
Mr Shadabghulam, Diabetes mellitus usually hardly produces any symptoms, therefore, many persons do not realise that they have diabetes. When fully developed it can cause excessive urination, excessive hunger, excessive thirst, unexplained tiredness and weight loss. There are two major types of diabetes T1 and T2. T1 is due to autoimmune problem and can only be treated by insulin injections. T2 is either due to lack of Insulin or resistance its action or both. This is a familial conditionOver weight or obesity and inactivity plus junk foods also contribute for it. . It can be prevented by regular exercise, maintaining normal weight and having a balanced diet.

How is your sugar control? have you checked hba1c level? joint pains may not be a direct consequence of diabetes. If sugar control is very good then better consult an orthopedic doctor. If control is bad first get the sugar in control and then try other treatment.
