Hello doctor. I am a 20 years old non married girl. I am having a hypothyroid and also protein is very high in my body but the problem is that there is lack of calcium and also I want to loose my weight kindly provide me with the best diet plan that is rich in calcium and helps me to control my thyroid, protein and fats too.

Foods to Eat Nutrient-rich foods that improve your health may also benefit your thyroid gland, including: Antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables: Blueberries, tomatoes, bell peppers, and other foods rich in antioxidants can improve overall health and benefit the thyroid gland. Eating foods high in B vitamins, like whole grains, may also help. Selenium: Tiny amounts of selenium are needed for enzymes that make thyroid hormones to work properly. Eating selenium-rich foods, such as sunflower seeds or Brazil nuts, can be beneficial. Tyrosine: This amino acid is used by the thyroid gland to produce T3 and T4. Taking a supplement may help, but ask your doctor beforehand.

What causes hashimoto's thyroiditis, and what is the best method of treatment? can iodine help this condition?

MBBS, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Mumbai
Hashimoto's thyroiditis is caused by autoimmune response by body where body try to destroy thyroid gland and its enzyme. Anti-tpo anti atg is mostly positive or either of it. Thyroid peroxidase is enzyme needs to build t3 t4 hormones from iodine. The best way to treat is via levothyroxine supplementation. Iodine is raw material but when enzyme is destructed by autoimmune system, supplementing raw material is not of much use.

Mr Dojan, First thing is you have to achieve excellent sugar control, (fasting closer to 100 mg and PP areound 150 to 160 mg and HbA1c%<7). Then get an examination done to see any enlargement of prostate, because that can affect passing urine and cause difficulty.

Hello Dr. Am suffering from hypothyroid and am taking thyronorm 25 in addition to that my prolactin level is also high and doctor advised me cabgolin 0.25 tablet. Is it safe to take this tablet during my periods? And tell me the possibilities of conceiving please. Thank you.

MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology, DGO

Yes, it is safe to take both tablets even during your periods. You need to take these tablets to get your levels under control. Once your thyroid and prolactin levels come under control you have good chance of conception unless you have any other problem.

I am 45 year old diabetic male. My diabetes levels are 130 fasting and 134 pp. Hba1c is 6.5. BP is normal. I am taking gemer2 before breakfast and dinner. Janumet 50 500 after breakfast and dinner. I have lost fat all over body specially around shoulder and biceps. Pl suggest diet and exercise to gain muscle mass. I take non veg food, do not smoke, drink.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
Mr. lybrate-user, If you have lost fat then it is really very good. That helps better control of diabetes. If you want to build muscle mass then have to exercise daily for over 1 hour, do aerobic and strength building exercises, plus take good balanced diet. If your diet lacks proteins then add extra proteins, that will help in building muscle mass. But without good deal of exercise there will not be any muscle mass built. Thanks.

I am a 56 yrs old, male. I have diabetes (hereditary) and high blood pressure. Diabetes is around two old. Pressure is under control. Presently my feet (both), at the toe end, the under sloe below the toes get swelled up and numb, also the toes get numb. This has happened when my diabetes reading had gone upto 230. It later came down to 150. But the swelling and numbness still persist. Presently, I am taking, glycomet? 500 sr, diabetone pn, euglim 1. What is your view.

M.D. Internal Medicine

Be specific whether your diabetes is too old or two years old. Because you can get numbness because of uncontrolled diabetes of longer duration resulting in diabetic neuropathy. Some times nutritional def can also can give you similar trouble. Get your hba1c, s, proteins, s creat, tsh, cbc, s. B12 levels done.

My mother is 80 years old, she is a diabetic and bp patient, few of her teeth had to be removed.

Diploma in Nutrition
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Secunderabad
Hello , for diabetes: pls follow the doctor prescribed medicine. Which controls the diabetics and will not allow you increase. But along with medication, you need to concentrate on food also. Make sure you food must have high protein, fiber and omega-3 nutrition. For a diabetics, its good to have more protein rather than carbohydrates, which converts into glucose and may have a chance to increase the diabetes. What we suggest is the nutrigemoic protein, who certified, with 9 essential amino acids. This will help you cure your diabetics. But you will definitely have a result, if you can use protein with vitamins and minerals, fiber and omega-3 supplements for bp: pls go with omega-3 supplement and cholesterol balance and garlic for heart care.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
Mr. Lybrate-user, the sugar levels are ok, only after food is high. To control these levels, you need to take appropriate anti diabetic drugs, plus control the diet and exercise daily for at least 1 hour a day, brisk walking is good. Food to be taken is like every one of us, but no sweets, no direct sugar or gur, no deep fried foods, no junk foods and pastries. Also avoid sweetened aerated drinks, high fat milk products, red meat, egg yolk. Fish is good, but not fried one. Consume good deal of green leafy vegetables and salads.
