Care For Yourself With Homoeopathy!

Care for yourself with homeopathy

In case you cannot rush to the doctor or feel that you can handle your health condition, self-medicate with some common homeopathic medicines.

Many a time, while addressing small illnesses or for unavailability of healthcare facilities, we choose to self-medicate at home. India’s 52% population self-medicates by visiting the pharmacist for common healthcare issues like feverdiarrheacough, and cold. Reasons like financial issues, lack of affordable primary healthcare, lack of awareness, and many more reasons contribute to why people decide to self-medicate.

The basics of self-medication

I would stick my neck out and say that home remedies, and thereby, self-medication is a part of our culture. However, while we self-medicate, it is best to keep in mind the basics: a few precautions.

  • Knowing your medicines well can help you cure yourself with minimum medical supervision. However, don’t forget to check the seal, manufacturing details and expiry date on medicines when you purchase them from a homeopathic pharmacy.

  • Identify your symptoms before treating them. If you have the slightest doubt, consult a physician.

  • If the symptoms continue after a maximum of three days of self-medication or if they aggravate, then do not continue; immediately consult a physician.

  • If new symptoms show with the existing ones, then discontinue your intake of medicines and consult a physician.

  • Do not consume too many medicines at a time as medicines tend to have reactions amongst them.

Following are a few homeopathic medicines for a few common illnesses that you can consume safely.

Sprains

A sprain occurs when you stretch a ligament that connects a joint. Considering the fast-paced lives, we are bound to suffer from sprains and aches. For this, one can have 6 pills of Rhus-tox 30CH, three times a day and continue this for two days. For your child below the age of twelve years, the dose has to be Rhus-tox 200CH, 3-4 doses per day for two days. Along with the medicine, don’t forget to use ice-packs on the affected area for the first 48 hours. Rest as much as possible, and elevate the limb while you take rest.

Diarrhea

Loose watery bowel movement along with urgency can be dealt at home provided the person is kept well hydrated. For loose motions, Aloes 30CH can be the best medicine. One has to take six pills of Aloes 30CH after every two hours for four doses, and this will reduce the frequency of your loose motions.

Also remember that you can always go the old way of giving a solution of sugar, salt, and water or coconut water at regular intervals as this will provide relief to the person. After self-medication and home remedies, if the person starts vomiting or looks dull then, you ought to go to the doctor.

Cold and stuffy nose

With changing seasons, it is very common to suffer from Coryza or stuffy nose; thin watery discharge which is not due to fever. At times we may suffer from a headache and body pain as well. For these issues, Allium Cepa is best suited for adults and children as well. The dose should be four pills of Allium Cepa 30 CH thrice a day for 4-5 days.

Also, it is mandatory to drink enough water; moreover, you are all set to enjoy all the soups and warm liquids. Do not forget to take steam inhalation as well.

Painful menstruation

A common symptom that most girls face during their menses is abdominal pain. Suffering from menstrual cramps for the first two days is normal but if it makes you miss your school days or office days, then you can consume six pills of Mag Phos 200CH four times a day on the first day of your menses and can continue till your pain releases. We all know how relieving those warm heating pads are, so using them will be a relaxing thing for you. Exercising regularly throughout the month will definitely ease the pain. You can rest on the first day of your menses.

Acidity

The reason for acidity may be lack of sleep, consumption of oily and spicy food which you may not be quite used to. The complaints of acidity can range from burning sensation in the chest and abdomen, water brash, eructation, and abdominal pain as well. For this, the person can have a dose of four tablets of Natrum Phos 6X. You can increase the dose to three times a day for three days in case the acidity continues. However, do not self medicate in case of frequent vomiting, this is when you need to visit the doctor.

Calcium deficiency

Calcium is necessary for the healthy growth of your bones and teeth; that’s why adults and children have prescribed calcium supplements if they suffer calcium deficiency. Calcarea Phos 6X is the medicine that can replace your calcium supplements tablets. Calcarea Phos 6X does not cause any GI disturbance and can be used in any age group from pediatric to geriatric, for a longer duration. The dose is four tablets twice a day and can be safely taken for three months.

Note - The golden rule of self-medication: as a responsible self-medicating patient, know your boundaries and know precisely when you need to visit a physician.

Causes And Treatment Of Uterine Fibroids!

MBBS, Diploma in Obstetrics & Gynaecology

Causes And Treatment Of Uterine Fibroids!

Uterine fibroids, also known as leiomyoma or myoma, are benign growths on the uterus, occurring mostly during the years of childbearing. Few of the common symptoms of fibroids are leg pain or backache, constipation, difficulty in emptying the bladder, frequent urination, pain or pressure in the pelvic region, menstrual periods stretching over a week and excessive menstrual bleeding.

Causes:

  1. Certain genetic changes of the uterus which are different from the ones normally present in the muscle cells of the uterus can cause this disorder.

  2. Certain hormones such as progesterone and estrogen that prepare the body for pregnancy are even responsible for triggering the development of fibroids.

  3. Substances which help the body maintain its tissues trigger fibroid growth as well.

  4. Family history, excessive consumption of alcohol and red meat while going low on foods such as dairy products, fruits, green vegetables and vitamin D, obesity, usage of birth control pills and early onset of the menstruation cycle are other factors that may escalate the risks of one suffering from fibroids.

Treatment:

  1. Be careful and take a closer look: Fibroids are fundamentally non-cancerous and they hardly interfere with pregnancy. Often, they do not exhibit notable symptoms and are prone to shrinkage after menopause. Hence giving them and yourself some time might be the best option.

  2. Medications generally aim at the hormones controlling the menstrual cycle and treating symptoms such as pelvic pressure and excessive menstrual bleeding. However, they do not treat fibroids completely but work towards contracting them. They include-

    • Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (Gn-RH) agonists to block estrogen and progesterone production

    • Progestin-releasing intrauterine device (IUD) to alleviate severe bleeding caused due to fibroids

    • Tranexamic acid to ease excessive menstrual periods

    • Progestins or oral contraceptives to regulate menstrual bleeding

    • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to ease pain associated with fibroids

Surgeries to Treat Fibroids:

Depending on symptoms and whether medical therapy has failed, the patient may have to undergo surgery. The following surgical procedures may be considered:

  1. Hysterectomy: removing the uterus. This is only considered if the fibroids are very large, or if the patient is bleeding too much. Hysterectomies are sometimes an option to prevent fibroids coming back.

  2. Myomectomy: fibroids are surgically removed from the wall of the uterus. This option is more popular for women who want to get pregnant.

  3. Endometrial ablation: removing the lining of the uterus. This procedure may be used if the patient's fibroids are near the inner surface of the uterus; it is considered an effective alternative to a hysterectomy.

  4. UAE (Uterine artery embolization): this treatment cuts off the fibroid's blood supply, effectively shrinking the fibroid.

  5. Magnetic-resonance-guided focused ultrasound surgery: an MRI scan locates the fibroids, and sound waves are used to shrink the fibroids.

Latest Advancements:

Mifepristone: It, also known as RU-486, reduces heavy menstrual bleeding and imporves fibroid-specific quality of life. It competitively binds and inhibitsprogesterone receptors.

Ulipristal acetate: It is a progesterone receptor modulator that acts as a postcoital contraceptive. As progesterone promotes the growth of uterine fibroids, blocking its receptor may reduce their size.

Miscarriage - Ways To Recover

Miscarriage - Ways To Recover

Once the reality of the positive pregnancy test sets in, dreaming about the yet-to-arrive begins. Curiosity about gender, options for names, ways to manage, shopping ideas, etc., begin to get discussed.  And then totally out of the blue the news comes that there is a miscarriage. This is one of the most depressing phases.

It is very important for the family to be around and support each other. While the entire family is upset and hurt over the news, the mother needs most care as there is just not emotional but a huge physical component also to the episode. On the other hand, remember that miscarriages are extremely common, and is no indication of a fertility issue.

The first step would be to diagnose and confirm the miscarriage.  After that, depending on whether it was complete or incomplete, some medical intervention might be required. In most cases, medications like misoprostol are given to expel the uterine contents. These help by clearing out the contents in about a couple of days' time. The sufferes of miscarriage should also undergo a Nuchal Scan (NT Scan) between 11 to 13 week from pregnancy.

In some cases, a D&C might be required if your doctor suspects that medication will not suffice. This also helps identify if there is any issue in the uterus that could have caused the miscarriage. While the above take care of the physical part, the emotional component also requires cautious management. Needless to say, this is trickier than the earlier one.

Mourn to your heart's content - When you have nursed a life within you and have lost it, it is very normal to cry for its loss. There would be a mix of emotions - shock, denial, confusion, anger, grief, depression, etc. Take some solace from that fact that this is nature's way of removing unhealthy fetuses.

Get someone to talk to - Need not be your husband, but anybody whom you can talk to without having to watch words. A sibling, a good friend, a close relative - your choice.  Make sure you don't pick ones who will judge and sympathize with you. More than sympathy, you need someone understanding and knowledgeable.

Socialize more - As you would have kept to yourself post your positive test, use this time to socialize more and meet friends whom you have not regularly been in touch with. Close family members, your children (if you already have), society groups, movie groups, etc., help to a great extent.

Formal medical counseling - If you are not able to cope with your regular circle of family and friends, try seeking professional advice from counseling.

Spirituality - Whether you believe in temple or churches, spend some time there.  Involve in some religious activity if you would like, this helps very often.

As much as it is painful and traumatic, it is not very uncommon or unnatural. Get back on your feet, the sooner you do, the better.  If you think you need additional help and would like to consult with me privately, please click on 'Consult'.

Who Should Get a Mammogram?

MBBS, DGO, Fellowship in Minimally Invasive Gynaecology and Endoscopy

Who Should Get a Mammogram?

A mammogram is an imaging test where an X-ray is taken to recreate the internal imagery of your breasts. This is a screening test that is widely used to find the earliest signs of cancer. There have been instances where the early signs of cancer have been found up to three years before the actual development of the same. There are a number of benefits and risks in this screening method. So let us find out more about getting a mammogram, and whether or not you should get one.

  • Procedure: A special X-ray machine is used for conducting a mammogram. There is a clear plastic plate on which the specialist will place the breast while another plate will press on the breast from above. While both the plates serve to flatten the breast and hold it still, the X-ray will be taken. Some pressure will be felt and the same steps will be repeated so as to get the side view of the breasts. The same procedure will be repeated for the other breast. Meanwhile, once it is done, you will need to wait so that the technician can check for clarity, and whether or not the procedure needs to be done again. The results of this procedure cannot be relayed by the technician, and all the images will be different because all breasts are slightly different from each other.
  • Preparation: You will need to remember that the process can be a slightly painful one, especially once the pressure gets applied. Many women complain of discomfort and pain. Yet, this discomfort gets over before you know it. The pressure and pain will depend on the size of your breasts and how much they will have to be pressed in order to get a picture. The skill of the technician will also come into play here. One must remember not to get this procedure done a week or so before or after the menstrual cycle, as the breasts tend to be tender around this time, and the pain will be much more.
  • Radiologist: Within a few weeks after the procedure, the radiologist will usually deliver the result. This is the professional who does an accurate reading of the X-ray.
  • Normal and Abnormal Readings: If your mammogram result has a normal reading, then you can resort to getting one done every once in a while. But an abnormal reading will require further X-ray and tests so as to be able to tell for sure.
  • Why should I get one: If you are over 40 and have a family history of such ailments. Women between 45-54 years with average risk, should get it done once every year. Women above 55 years, should get it done every 2 years.

Pregnancy test should not be done so early. Urine Pregnancy test should be done 10 days after missing your period. For example if your date was 10th, then do the test on 20th. Before that it can give false negative or false positive test So wait for 3more days n do the test. Do it on 30th December. Not before that.
