Eclampsia is a very serious condition that can occur as an aftermath of preeclampsia, which can endanger both the mother and the baby. Formerly known as toxemia, preeclampsia is a condition that registers a sudden rise in blood pressure in gestating mothers, who experience hypertension like never before.
Although it can appear even before, preeclampsia often develops after the 20 week mark accompanied by a high protein level in urine along with swelling in legs and hands of the pregnant patient.
Women who show signs of seizures while suffering from preeclampsia, are considered to have eclampsia.
Bed rest, reclining on the left side is one of the most common preeclampsia treatment. However, if the symptoms of this illness become more severe, medicines are prescribed for lowering the blood pressure of the gestating woman.
While undergoing preeclampsia treatment, mothers are also given steroid injections to help the baby's lungs develop more quickly.
One should consult an obstetrician or a gynecologist if any women find herself suffering from symptoms of preeclampsia during pregnancy as this illness often leads to premature births.
