When any irritating or tickling sensation occurs in the nose, it causes Sneezing. Apart from viral infection, flu, sinusitis or various respiratory tract infections, pollen, germs, dust and products with strong odor can also be the probable causes. Bright light can also cause sneezing. Some of the symptoms accompanied by sneezing can be runny nose, sore throat, watering of eyes, puffy eyelids, itchy sensation in nose, headache, reduced odor sensation, etc. Sometimes it can also cause body aches, fever, fatigue and dry nose.
HOW IS SNEEZING DIAGNOSED?
Occasional sneezing does not require any diagnosis. Repeated sneezing accompanied by other symptoms like red or watery eyes, headache and runny nose may require diagnosis. Ear-nose-throat specialist may examine your nose and throat with the help of a torch and check for any inflammation or swelling. The doctor may check for allergic symptoms and infections that may be causing sneezing. In some cases sputum is examined for presence of bacteria and virus
HOW IS SNEEZING TREATED?
For treating allergic type of sneezing, the doctors may prescribe steroid nasal sprays and antihistamines. Nasal decongestants in the form of tablets and sprays are also recommended by the doctor.
