Lybrate-user - you have to realise that not everyone can and will think like you. If you are basing your happiness on what people do according to your wish, then i'm sorry you will be sad always. The key to happiness is - set goals for yourself - do what you can do to the best of your capacity and cherish your achievements. It is good to have a different thinking and choice, but you can not impose your thinking on others. All of us want to be loved by others, but unless you love yourself and love others, it is unlikely people will appreciate what you do. Make a list of all that you want to do - write them on a paper. Pick up something that is easiest for you to do- most achievable, then go on to the next. This will help make you a strong person.

You cannot control your anger, it is like electricity, expression of energy that comes in a flash you should look at t he roots of anger, the frustration is always when the other is not behaving or acting as you want them to do. Accept that it is not possible that ways, much similar as you will behave as per your discretion and not as others want you to! you can stop worrying by not focusing on the outcome, which is funnily not in your hands!

You probably have an overactive mind that fantasies easily on any possibility. This is a non-productive way of living. You must ground yourself to reality. The following will help if you did them meticulously: Daily exercise of at least half an hour is a must. Even if you go to a gym, ask for aerobic and/or callisthenic exercises with whatever else you are doing. A healthy body harbors a healthy mind. With regard to memory, it is very important that your brain and body is ideally rested to be able to recall whatever is required, rather comfortably. Puzzles pose problems to the brain that help it to use new pathways and neurons, which give the brain considerable exercise. It taxes the left brain to use logic to solve the myriad possibilities which other activities do not stimulate. Crosswords are excellent for vocabulary learning and use. Jigsaws and Rubik cube stimulate different permutations to finally settle on the most likely one. Picture completion and anagrams help approach problem-solving from several angles. Do Sudoku, and memory co-relation activities and skills. Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber (whole grains, fruits and vegetables), nuts, avocado, eat dark chocolate, consume less of fat and use olive oil instead, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. You need to check out if you are stronger visual or auditory. The visual is a better mode than the auditory. However, if you combine the two modes, you will get the best concentration. Have a special place of learning, which should be well lit, with soft painted walls, well-ventilated, with no distractions. When you get bored, study by writing. If you repeat learning, at least, five to seven times, you will apparently remember for a longer time. Sit comfortably but do not slouch. The reading material should be of a fairly large print. Study at small intervals of about 40 minutes and then take a break or change the subject. Short-term memory is a faculty of the left brain, and long-term memory is a feature of the right brain. When people are stressed, they tend to favor the right brain and abandon the left brain, where short-term memory resides. So, it is really very simple: deal with the stress and activate left brain functions. Here are a few suggestions to activate left brain function: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. There is a new exercise called Super Brain Yoga, which is done by holding the right earlobe with your left thumb and index finger, and the left earlobe with your right hand’s thumb and index finger. In this position, you must squat down and rise up and do this for five minutes every day. There is some memory enhancing techniques and study methods that your teacher will be able to guide you with. If your home life is full of distractions and stress, it is likely to affect your memory, adversely. In that case, I suggest that the family goes for counseling too. The following foods do help too: Blueberries, walnuts, turmeric, Spinach, tomatoes, broccoli, acorn squash, green tea, oily fish, boiled egg, turkey, apples, oatmeal, leafy greens, lentils, pumpkin seeds, avocado, cinnamon, thyme, sunflower seeds, and red wine. Avoid sugar and junk food.

Hello, This friend of mine shared to me that she was child abused as a kid and then she shares that she has been into multiple relations and is interested sexual activities. I have heard somewhere that these can be co-related. She doesn't want to consult anyone or share this to anyone. Please let me know if this is a problem interlinked and how to deal with it. You cannot realistically help her unless you have some professional abilities. Please guide her to a competent counselor and that person will tell you how to help her in a supportive capacity. Besides, this is such a personal; matter that I should not be sharing with you the nature of the connection between her current behavior and the past contributions. So, kindly bear with me that this kind of information cannot be divulged to a third person for practical reasons.

How can I increase my interest in studies. I can't control my emotions n easily lose concentration thinking of other things?

BASM, MD, MS (Counseling & Psychotherapy), MSc - Psychology, Certificate in Clinical psychology of children and Young People, Certificate in Psychological First Aid, Certificate in Positive Psychology
Psychologist, Palakkad
Dear lybrate user. I can understand. To increase interest in your education, you need to have a concrete attainable goal. You must be able to understand concentration, attention span, recollection and distraction. If you are able to watch a movie for two hours continuously, if you are able to play a game for an hour, then you do not have any concentration problems. You can't be attentive towards your studies because you are not interested in it. You are able to watch movie and play game because you are interested in it. Human cannot be attentive towards anything for more than 10 minutes. Then you should study in such a way that your attention is continued and make the subjects are interesting to you. Effective learning techniques should help you. Recollection depends on anxiety, stress and other physical and circumstantial factors. Distractions while studying are plentiful. You should be able to overcome distractions or avoid distractions. Please understand the above. Change your study style and attitude accordingly. I suggest online counseling and" effective learning" techniques. Take care.

Hi,
I had a breakup last December. And it's been three months but I'm not able to move on. I have even got a job now ...
First understand why break up happens! When things do not go smoothly as expected for a person one of them breaks up. Right! So why are you wasting time on a wrong relationship instead of finding a right partner. Each bad experience paves the way to realisation of what you want in a life partner. Better to break up now then live in a life long messy marriage. Move on and enjoy life. Work on what you need to do. Rather than what would be good for later on. Remember happy moments and keep them with you for life. The sad moments remove. You have one life. Live it. Go with the flow than against it. You are not God. He has designed something for you. Enjoy the journey of life. Thanks.

Hi. I am suffering from depression since a very very long time. I get stresses for no reason sometimes. My parents keep fighting most of the time. Since my childhood I have seen their fights where my dad use to sometimes cross his limits n hit. I have seen all this things since childhood BT was helpless. BT as I grew older even their normal argument stresses me a lot where I can not think straight. I feel as if my dad will hit my mom. Every single day when I am out for work I always pray that everything should be absolutely fine n peaceful at home. I love my mom more then anyone n anything in this world n I always get scared about anything happening wrong with her. Now a days after I take a nap in afternoon I get stressed out for no valid reason. There us always stress built up on my mind sometimes even without a reason. I always think as if I am good for nothing. N sometimes I even cry which makes me a lil relaxed. At work I am stressed abt work. While coming home I am stressed abt how's every thing at home. Till date. If my dad is angry he tries to hit us. BT we somehow manage to stop him. He does not drink or smoke. BT he is short tempered. I have told him many times to improve. BT he never listens. Hi lybrate-user, sorry to read about the situation. It's really hard to remain silent in such situations. Anxieties and anticipations are the out come of fear which is not expressed. I would suggest few easy ways to get some positive vibes. 1. Even this will pass away - no two moments are same. 2. Only positive attitude can win negative thoughts. 3. To see the change first you need to change. Your father can change but there should be his need and not your to change. 4. Try meditation. This will calm you and help you think clearly. 5. Do regular exercise. It will bring you cheerfulness and fitness - that is confidence. I hope this is enough to start, feel free to ask more we will surely help you.

You do not need to forget her. Once you start trying to forget her, you will feel the thoughts about her only increase in frequency and volume that may lead you to many psychological problems. Instead, keep in touch with her as a friend, at the same time, try to focus and spend more time on your studies or career planning. If you are strong enough to balance both, you will be the real life hero. Wish you a successful career life.

I am having a habit of chewing pan masala with tobacco. How to get rid of this habit?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
Chewing pan is really harmful especially because it is known to cause oral cancer and oral sub mucous fibrosis (SMF). Since it is an oral habit there are many substitutes that can be used to replace the oral stimulation. Of course since it is a stimulant you cannot get the same effect and that is worth the loss to give up this very addictive habit. A dense fibrous tissue is deposited in the sub mucosal layer of the soft palate and cheek, causing disabling symptoms like trismus. It contains betel nuts, tobacco, lime, catechu and permitted spices and flavors. The first four substances damage the sensitive mucosa, causing constant irritation and micro trauma to the mucosa. Chemicals present act as a toxin. The phenol in the betel nut, with its caustic burning effect, destroys the mucosa, causing oral ulcers. The betel nut also contains tannins, which act as astringents, precipitating protein and damaging the mucosa. Altogether, this substance known to be physiologically addictive. You can use replacements like nicotine chewing gum (if you want the stimulant effect, especially in the beginning) or ordinary chewing gum, hard candy and any other orally satiating substance, especially when the urge is very strong. You would have got conditioned to the habit to different times of the day and different situations. You must particularly avoid those occasions and occupy yourself with something else attractive. You should get into regular exercise, eat healthily, and get a good night’s rest every day. Visit a dentist and clean up your teeth and gums to wipe out all the reminders and damages of the habit. You may also get a thorough oral check up and treatment for any damages incurred.

Types Of Schizophrenia - How Can They Be Dealt With?

Types Of Schizophrenia - How Can They Be Dealt With?

Schizophrenia affects over 1% of the world’s population and affects the way a person thinks, feels and behaves. In most cases, it is diagnosed when a person is between the ages of 16 to 25. This condition can be hereditary and is said to affect men more often than women. Schizophrenia is characterized by an inability to distinguish between real and imaginary which can lead to delusions, social withdrawal, hallucinations and other forms of social and occupational dysfunction.

Schizophrenia affects different people in different ways. On the basis of the type of symptoms exhibited, this disease has been categorized into 5 sub types. These are:

  1. Paranoid schizophrenia: This type of schizophrenia is characterized by delusions and hallucinations that may make the person exhibit paranoid behaviour. These people often feel like they are being watched or followed and may have delusions of grandeur. They may also get angry quickly on minor issues and show signs of anxiety and hostility.
  2. Disorganized schizophrenia: In such cases, the person may behave in ways that are difficult to understand or speak in broken sentences and have difficulty structuring a sentence. They may also display inappropriate behaviour and react in ways not suitable to the occasion. People suffering from disorganized schizophrenia may also neglect their personal hygiene.
  3. Catatonic schizophrenia: People suffering from catatonic schizophrenia may swing between immobility and periods of rapid movement. They may stay quiet for hours or talk rapidly repeating everything they hear. These people have a high risk of harming themselves as they are usually unable to look after themselves and complete daily activities.
  4. Undifferentiated schizophrenia: People suffering from this type of schizophrenia exhibit behaviour that fits into more than one type of schizophrenia. From time to time they may have hallucinations, suffer from delusions or display catatonic behaviour and disorganized behaviour or speech.
  5. Residual schizophrenia: Even though a person may not be currently showcasing any signs of schizophrenia, they are said to have residual schizophrenia. Such people need to have had at least one schizophrenic episode. These people may exhibit symptoms later or be in complete remission.

With schizophrenia, an early diagnosis can make treatment easier and hence if you notice anyone exhibiting signs of schizophrenia, you must advise them to seek medical help immediately. Schizophrenia cannot be cured but it can be managed with a combination of typical or atypical medication and cognitive therapy. The latter can be in the form of self-help groups, housing and employment programs, counselling and therapy.
