Hi I am 28 year old male. I am software engineer. I think I am in depression because of my wife behavior. Please help me to save my life…We have been married more than 5 years now. My wife is good, however she is short tempered. Sometime she does’t even hesitate to scream at me or at my parents or at her parents or at our kid even in a party or a public place. I and her parents tried a lot to talk to her but all gone waste. Most of the time, the main reason of her screaming is any external intervention. For example she has her own way to do everything however if you try to show her a better way then she gets angry and it take her almost 2-3 days to behave normal. I really need a practical advice to handle this situation. Some time I am feeling of sadness, lack of concentration, slowness in activity and thought, or thoughts of suicide without any reason.

Hi I am 28 year old male. I am software engineer. I think I am in depression because of my wife behavior. Please help...
Let us first deal with problems of your wife. It seems she has anger management problems. It's natural to disagree or get annoyed at somebody's opinion if it gets against our own, but we need to learn to have a balanced response, no matter where we are, alone or in a party. Such uncontrolled anger outbursts can be due to personality problems, hormonal disturbances, mood disorders etc which need treatment with some medications and counseling. She would definitely be much better with treatment. As regards you, if you are bothered by your wife's behaviour for 5 years and feel sad and harming your own self, it means that you have given up on her. Also it seems that your mind is ina helpless situation and you find life worthless. You also need counselling for the same and some medicines to calm your state of mind.

Depression - 5 Ways to Deal With It!

D.P.M(psychiatry) [Diploma in Psychological medicine] , MBBS
Psychiatrist, Jalna
Depression - 5 Ways to Deal With It!

Depression is more than just feeling low or down. It is a serious illness that is caused by various changes in the brain chemistry. There are a lot of factors that cause depression, which range from genetics to change in hormone level, stress, grief, medical conditions and other life circumstances. All these can lead to depression and that is something which does not go away on its own. However, there are a few efficient ways through which patients can deal with depression. These are as follows:

  1. Exercise: Taking a brisk walk for fifteen to twenty minutes every day can be very healthy, not only for your body,  but also for your mental health as well. Dancing, jogging, cycling and yoga are alternatives as well. Although, people who are depressed might not feel like doing any of those things, but one should try to do them anyway. Once a person gets into the exercising routine, they will start noticing the change in their mood. Deep breathing, yoga exercises and meditation can also help people feel better and less depressed.
  2. Anti-depressants: Three brain chemicals that are responsible for handling your mood are norepinephrine, serotonin and dopamine. During depression, the brain circuits that make use of these chemicals stop working properly. In this case, antidepressants can be very useful. These tweak the chemicals that run through the brain and help improve your overall mood.
  3. Psychotherapy: It is a method through which therapists find out a person’s everyday stressors. This therapy is a powerful treatment for depression. Combining psychotherapy with medications can be even better and more effective. This also makes the symptoms easier to take. When a person talks about his feelings and problems with a stranger, it can help him or her release certain amount of stress.
  4. Social support: Talking to a friend or attending group therapies has proven to be beneficial. However, it is important that the person you talk to is someone who you will feel comfortable around. Therefore, it could be someone you know or someone who empathises with you. This is possible either with your close ones or group therapies where the people you talk with, have been going through the same problem you have.
  5. Meditation: Calmness and meditation can help you channelize your positive energy and thoughts over the negative ones. It can help a person see new perspective, develop forgiveness and compassion. Much like exercise, meditating briefly can help you gain immediate effects. It helps a person get over depression. This happens over time. One might not be successful in releasing their stress at once. It is a process that takes time.

The treatment that you get for your depression will depend on the kind of depression that you have. Some might get psychotherapy while others might get antidepressants or for some, exercise could be enough. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a psychologist.

You need to develop your coping skills to reduce the stress and worries. Accumulated emotions often cause the stress and worries. Try to release your negative emotions through the different ways such as sharing, writing the emotions, yoga, deep breathing, acupressure etc.

Dear Prashant, Welcome to lybrate. At your age, Memory problems like amnesia, dementia or Alzheimer's are not common. Many young people do complain having problems with memory. These problems are due to either they are too busy or due to anxiety and stress. Busy people use organizers or employ a personal assistant because they can't remember every task. You need to understand this. If you still say, you are having memory problems, we need to check your memory using memory test. You may contact a clinical psychologist or neurologist for memory test and further investigation. Take care.

A boss duty is always to pinpoint the limitation or mistakes which one commits. So it is a part of their job, but taking criticism to such an extent which would hinder your growth or makes you highly distressed is not a good thing. So it is important for you to instead of repeatedly thinking about it, try to de-stress yourself by engaging in pleasurable and relaxable things like going out with family or friends, playing or doing some exercise second, all of us at one time or other become highly tensed when we are being criticized at workplace and leads to low motivation, less job satisfaction and stressed up. But dealing with criticism in a positive manner and instead of worrying over it, try to see what all things are there where you are lacking and if possible there can be chances of changing those things.

Dear lybrate-user, welcome to lybrate. You must be able to understand concentration, attention span, recollection and distraction. If you are able to watch a movie for two hours continuously, if you are able to play a game for an hour, then you do not have any concentration problems. You can't be attentive towards your studies because you are not interested in it. You are able to watch movie and play game because you are interested in it. Human cannot be attentive towards anything for more than 10 minutes. If the task is boring, it is natural that that person will sleep or feel sleepy. Then you should study in such a way that your attention is continued and make the subjects are interesting to you. Effective learning techniques should help you. Recollection depends on anxiety, stress and other physical and circumstantial factors. Distractions while studying are plentiful. You should be able to overcome distractions or avoid distractions. Please understand the above. Change your study style and attitude accordingly.

Unfortunately schizophrenia is a chronic condition that can not be cured but can be effectively kept under control/managed well. The patient should be on psychiatric treatment and periodic supervision by a psychiatrist. Take her to your psychiatrist without delay.

Your tests came back negative and therefore Your increased Blood pressure, surely could be due to your anxiety. That is also natural. Anxiety, in any kind is supposed to hike your BP by around 30 mmgg. You need to answer your anxiety problem first. For that you should diagnose your type of anxiety with a psychologist, get psychotherapy treatment.

I am feeling difficult in remembering names, memories and other activities. I am feeling annoyed with my brain. I want myself to be as normal. How to notice a problem with my brain?

MS - Counselling and Psychotherapy, MPHIL
Psychologist, Mumbai
For helping with memory, repeating helps. Repeat the names you wish to remember. Have a task list written down for the activities that you wish to do. Learn to be relaxed. Don't stress over and over that you have a memory issue. If you feel it's severe go to a doctor and get a thorough check up done.

Dear, Alcoholism is alcohol addiction. If you?re ready to stop drinking and willing to get the support you need, you can recover from alcoholism and alcohol abuse?no matter how bad the addiction or how powerless you feel. The first step in treating alcoholism is accepting that you have a problem. Confronting an addiction and accepting responsibility for your actions isn?t easy. But it?s a necessary step on the road to treatment and recovery. You should then consult a psychiatrist / psychologist who fill follow this treatment. 1. Detoxification using medicines. 2. Behavior modification with the help of therapies. 3. Counseling. 4. Medication to sustain and 5. Long term support. These given steps are essential for any addict to get effectively rid of alcoholism. Therefore, you need to stick to the treatment plan and cooperate with your psychiatrist / psychologist. Take care.

Dear, memory and recollection are two areas which determine our ability to write examinations. If you have not learned properly, recollection may not be possible. Concentration is another aspect. Attention span is another. Understanding is another. I would like to know on which aspect you want clarification? take care.
