I want to improve my mind power any natural medicine like Ayurveda please suggest me.

Dear Lybrate user. I can understand. Memory and mind power depends on three aspects. Understanding, retention and recollection. Recollection is easy if your retention is proper and flawless. Retention is possible when you are able understand what you read or learn. To understand you should have concentration. Concentration comes from effective learning techniques based on creative and active learning. Physical exercise, outdoor games, entertainment, socializing coupled with systematic learning improves your memory and mind power. Vegetables, fruits and nuts are perfect for memory. Brain games like sudoku and jigsaw puzzles helps too. Avocados, Beetroots, Blueberries, Broccoli. Celery, Coconut Oil, Dark Chocolate etc are good for improving concentration and memory. I suggest online education counseling. Take care.

How can I increase my memory? I forget things after some time. Please suggest me.

Dear, welcome to lybrate. At your age, memory problems like amnesia, dementia or alzheimer's are not common. Many young people do complain having problems with memory. These problems are due to either they are too busy or due to anxiety and stress. Busy people use organizers or employ a personal assistant because they can't remember every task. You need to understand this. If you still say, you are having memory problems, we need to check your memory using memory test. Memory and mind power depends mainly on three aspects. Understanding, storage and recollection. To understand what you are studying, you must be able to be attentive or concentrate. Concentration is possible when you are interested in that subject. Creative way of learning can help you concentrate and understand easily. When you are able to understand and concentrate, it is stored within your brain. If you read more and more it will be store in long term memory. Third part is retrieval. Whenever you want to retrive what you learned and stored, your brain gets the request, searches the database and retrieves the information for you. The retrieval may prove to be difficult if you are anxious, stressed, worried or tired physically or mentally. Retrieval is more easy when you are relaxed and healthy. Brain needs nutrients to keep itself sharp. Fruits, vegetables and dry fruits provide much needed nutrients for your brain. Include at least one fruit in your daily diet. Physical exercises, entertainment, hobbies, relaxation, memory games like sudoku etc help keep your memory sharp and active. Take care.

I know everything. But then too I feel that im not feeling mentally same as I used to do before. Why I feel this way? as if I have forgot myself and enthusiasm in things which was my world. This used to happen before but not in such intensity since last 10 days. Since 10 days ago my best friend's mother died. N I felt terrible sad for him since his just 20 and his life n future turned upside down. That made be so sad that I also cried n it was my first time that I ever went to funeral (hindu funeral. Since then I was like in state of ultimate sadness and I forgot everything I think. My plans my future my life way to live happy. I started feeling everyone gonna die life is meaningless. N bored to live felt to suicide. Since then I struggled a lot to clear my mind. N got lots of negative thoughts. So it was like conflict between negative n positive thoughts of myself. I felt like I even forgot how to think. My perspective changed. So I got worried that my perspective changed. A perspective by which we see world the way we do n make all plans all gone. As if a memory wipe. Since them im struggling to get back to my original self I tried lots of things like meditation, yoga, going out with friend. Visiting positive places like temples etc. N it helped me is someway but still I feel im not completely fine.

It's common that sometimes when we witness sad events, we also experience sadness. But it should not remain long. We should be able to come out of that and carry on with our daily routine. That is how life is. Death is inevitable. Everyone should accept it. As long as we are alive we should do good and make our life worthy. Its good that you are doing meditation and yoga. Continue that b'cas it gives you mental strength to carry out different activities.

I am suffering from erectile dysfunction and addict masturbation (2 to 3 times a day). I am 32 years old. Pl give me a solution.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
Are you married? How do you know you have erectile dysfunction? If you are masturbating so often daily, you may not be suffering from ED. Masturbation is alright accept if you indulge in it too much. Once you indulge in it you will get so used to that that you may not want to relate to another person to experience full sex through intercourse. Go meet a sexologist and discuss your addiction. You will also need to exercise and play contact games. Do not be alone for too long, and do not spend time in the bathroom beyond what is necessary. Always be in the company of others, and be occupied with interesting activities. Hobbies are really good. Think less of sex, and certainly do not watch porn movies. Learn to appreciate women and love their company in a healthy way. You will enjoy good sex with the opposite sex, if your mind is not distracted by self-indulgence. I can tell you heterosexual contact is wonderful and wholesome. Don’t go for a poor replica of something so pleasureful

Dear lybrate user...Scientifically anxiety leads to weight gain and not weight loss. Anxiety or any kind of stress leads to elevation of blood cortisol and this hormone is responsible to increase weight particularly in the waist region of the body. What I perceive in your case is that you are not able to gain weight and this makes you feel anxious in social situations. Anxiety is a normal phenomenon and is essential to survive and take appropriate actions once situations demands, but it is the excess than the situation appropriate anxiety that is harmful and needs to be targeted. Neurobiologically excess of anxiety or stress leads to increase in the hormone cortisol and having high cortisol is not good for our body systems. High cortisol leads to high blood sugar level and in long rul may cause Diabetes Mellitus, Heart Attacks, Stroke and paralysis, Hypertension and many more. So managing stress in life is very essential for being healthy. Learning Stress Management in life will definitely help you. Be in touch for learning more stuff. Take care

I don't want to be a gay. But I m interested to men? what I have to do?

MBBS, Msc Psychiatry, DPM
Psychiatrist,
I don't want to be a gay. But I m interested to men? what I have to do?
Well, it's okay that you are interested in men. This means either you have more female members in your family or you have less unisex friends. It is natural that anybody is attracted towards handsome men and beautiful ladies. One another interpretation of this behaviour may be that you unconsciously feel uncomfortable with women due to whatever reasons ; or you feel inferior at some issues. All you do is to boost up your self confidence. Once you would start feeling handsome and confident internally you would be behaving with everybody normally. Don't think that others are looking at you and what they would be saying, instead think that you are looking at others and you are awesome. I hope this works for you.

I am a singer by profession from mumbai. I'm suffering from vocal nodules from last 6 months. I have a big size polyp in my right vocal chord. Its been 4 months m taking regular treatment. Homeopathy medicine plus vocal therapy from a renowned doctor in mumbai. But still only 20 to 30% recovery is there. I'm really tensed as my whole career depends on my voice. please suggest what should I do to get recover soon.

MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Chennai
Vocal cord nodules are benign (noncancerous) growths on both vocal cords that are caused by vocal abuse. Over time, repeated abuse of the vocal cords results in soft, swollen spots on each vocal cord. These spots develop into harder, callous-like growths called nodules. The nodules will become larger and stiffer the longer the vocal abuse continues. Vocal abuse takes many forms and includes: allergies smoking tense muscles singing coaching cheerleading talking loudly drinking caffeine and alcohol (dries out the throat and vocal cords) you have to consult an ent surgeon for proper therapy, do not play with your voice.

My age is 18. I belongs to a family consisting father mother and sister. I am always a good student and with few extra curricular activities like writing literature. Dancing singing listening music etc. But my family environment has become worse and worse. It started deteriorating from when I was 11. My father is very male dominating. Bad behaviour, shouting, using slangs in short temper and beating my sister, me and my mother. He insults us every minute. He continued his extra marital affair from 5 years. My hatred towards him is increasing day by day. My mother is silent from past years for any unknown reason (she says she does not want to get insulted more by neighbours). I cannot study I cannot concentrate my mind though my higher secondary exam is near. I just want to kill him. I am not a girl to bear this immorality any more. Dear friend, you are in a very difficult situation and I feel your anger and frustration. It is understandable that in such a stressful situation how difficult it must be for you to focus on your studies. I am remembering what victor franklin discovered when he was in a nazi camp and inhuman experiments were done on him each day. During those moments he realized that no matter what is being done to him he has a freedom to choose his response. He remained strong despite of all adversity and also helped his fellow men to stay strong as well. I see you in the similar position. You are young and can't leave your family right now. No matter how hard it is you need to focus on your studies and excel so that you finish your school with good grades. After that enter into a good professional school and have a good career. Right now you need to be totally self centered and take good care of yourself. Until you become independent you need to keep focusing on you and your well being. Once you are financially independent then you will be able to help your mother and sister both so hat they can also have a good life. So please keep this long term goal in front of you, and plan and work towards your goal each day. As you are in a lot of stress I will recommend few things below for you to learn to manage your stress. Try following things to learn relaxation response which leads to better coping mechanism on a daily basis. To begin with doing guided progressive muscular relaxation before sleeping will help you relax. You could google and download an audio file. I would also suggest you to take a multiple small break to take 3 nice and deep breath while keeping your eyes closed. You could do this while sitting or standing or while even walking or climbing stairs (keep your eyes open in that case). When you take a nice and deep break there is actual physiological change in your body. This will help you to activate parasympathetic nervous system which promotes relaxation and helps you calm down and think more clearly. This will also actually improve your performance in your exams. Along with this physical exercise is one of the best way to relieve stress and stay fit. Engage in any kind of physical activity at least 4 times a week. This also helps in stress reduction. Along with this some relaxation exercises as well as engaging in joyful activities such as music, singing, dancing, reading, being in nature, gardening, talking with friends or anything which you enjoy will help reducing stress and rejuvenation of your mind and body. Have good routine for sleep and eating. Add salad in both lunch and dinner if you can that will also help. If you want to talk or need any further help please feel free to contact me. I will be happy to support you in what ever way I could. Hope this helps. Wishing you very best, please do take a good care of yourself.

I have problems that I became very aggressive to do any thing after on word if that work is not completed I angry.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Some of the" typical" responses to frustration include anger, quitting (burn out or giving up), loss of self-esteem and self-confidence, stress and depression. Anger management: 10 tips to tame your temper anger: there is a saying" frustration begets anger and anger begets aggression. Direct anger, is expressed toward the object perceived as the cause of the frustration. If a machine does not work, you might hit it or kick it. If someone gets in your way, you could verbally threaten them or push them aside. If the source of the frustration is too powerful or threatening for direct aggression, displaced aggression is often used. The aggression is redirected toward a less threatening and more available object. An angry person often acts without thinking. The person has given in to the frustration and they have given up restraint. Anger can be a healthy response if it motivates us to positive action but all too often the actions we engage in when angry are destructive. Indeed, if we could see a videotape of ourselves getting angry, the humiliation might well help cure us of anger. When you feel frustration building, you have to practice learned responses that lead to healthy actions instead of destructive ones. Giving up: giving up on a goal can be productive if the goal is truly out of reach. However, more often giving up (quitting or being apathetic) is another form of giving in to frustration. When repeatedly frustrated, people can drop out of school, quit jobs, or move away. Apathy is giving up all of your goals, so you cannot be frustrated by trying to reach them. We live in difficult time and we have to be persistent in order to accomplish. Consider how many projects you began, and then gave up, because you became frustrated and lost patience. Make a list of things you started and quit because they seemed too difficult. Now calculate the disappointment and loss you suffered by not dealing with the frustration in a more healthy way. Try to remember that quitters never win, and winners never quit. Losing your temper means you're a quitter. Loss of confidence: is a terrible frequent side effect of giving up and not fulfilling your goal. A loss of self-confidence and self-esteem, means that if we quit once, then the next time we plan a goal, we may not be able to accurately assess our ability to carry it out and we stop trusting ourselves and our own abilities. This became a self-fulfilling and self-destructive attitude. You need to be able to learn that when the going gets tough, you say to yourself" it is worth it! and by following through, it not only gets the job done, but it builds self-confidence. Stress: is the" wear and tear" our body and mind experiences as we adjust to the frustrations our continually changing environment. Too frequently, extreme, or prolonged frustration and stress strains us and generates distress signals. Our body experiences distress signals in a variety of ways, often in the form of: irritability, anger, fatigue anxiety, headache, depression, stomach aches, hypertension, migraines, ulcers, heart attacks, or colitis. Depression: depression can affect almost every aspect of your life. It affects people of all ages, income, race, and cultures. Depression can affect the way you eat and sleep the way you feel about yourself, the way one think about things, and the way you interact with others. While we all feel depression at various appropriate times in our lives, excess or inappropriate depression cannot be easily dismissed or wished away. Other reactions: abuse of drugs & alcohol is self-destructive and usually futile attempt at dealing with frustration, as are many eating and weight problems and addictions whenever the immediate effects of the addictive behaviour wear off, users find themselves back in the same, or even worse, frustrating situation. Anger is among the gamut of emotions we exhibit as a reaction to a situation, and it is a'normal' emotion too as long as it is kept under control. Some people have the propensity to explode when pushed to the extreme. They keep swallowing their emotions until they can finally do it no more, and erupt like a volcano. Others dealing with extreme anger are like a ticking time bomb. You'll never know what you unwittingly say or do can trigger an explosion. In either case, anger that cannot be controlled comes with a physical reaction. Your heart beats faster preparing you for both action and reaction. Your breathing quickens. You may clench your fist, tighten your shoulders and go into a defensive position. The problem arises out of the fact that it is almost impossible to feel anger and empathy at the same time. An angry person is seldom sensitive to the wellbeing of his victim, and hence may lash out verbally and sometimes physically. Such things done in the heat of the moment mostly leaves us with regrets. So here are a few ways to deal with extreme anger. 1. Approve it / acknowledge it: the first step in solving a problem is recognizing that you have one. The fundamental problem here is that people believe they are on the right track and refuse to budge from their views. It is essential to realize that this step is not about deciding whether you are right or wrong, but acknowledging the fact that your reaction to the situation can be channelled in a better way. When getting someone to acknowledge their anger problem, be careful as to not use negative words like wrong, false and shouldn't. Instead, influence with positive words like can and should. Instead of saying'you are wrong to react like this' you can say'i understand what you are feeling. Is there a way we can resolve this situation? 2. Understand / recognize the signs: once you know that your problems exist, you can try devising ways that will work for you in dealing with the situation. You can count to 100 to calm yourself or simply decide to not speak until you can calm yourself. Knowing that you may enter into an argument in a situation, you can list down the points that you feel strongly about and discuss each of them one by one. Working your way through a finite list gives a better opportunity to reach closure at the end. 3. Free the mind/find ways to let it go: not all arguments end in closure. A lot of unsaid justifications cloud our mind repeatedly leaving us seething from the inside. Research has shown that the normal or neurological anger response lasts less than two seconds. Beyond that it takes a strong will to stay angry. Once you realize how much your anger is consuming your mind, decide to free your mind with meditation and other calming exercises. Tell yourself that some people and issues simply don't deserve your anger, emotion, reaction or time. If you or someone you know is suffering from anger management issues, consult a doctor today. Learning to deal with frustration it is unrealistic to believe you can rid yourself of frustration forever, but you can learn to do things to minimize your frustrations and to make sure you do not engage in unhealthy responses to frustration. You will need to learn to distinguish between what you hope will happen, what will probably happen, and what actually happened. Life inevitably has its ups and downs -- its moments of relaxation and times of tension. When you learn to truly accept this reality, you come one step closer to being able to deal with frustration in a healthy way. There are several types of problems that we encounter in everyday living: those which you know can be solved, those which you are not sure if they can be solved or not, those you know are totally out of your control, and those you are so confused about that you do not even know what the problem is. You need to be able to accurately assess your abilities to alter situations that prevent you from solving your problems and reaching your goal. Then you will be able to assess which of the types of problems you have encountered, and you will then be able to develop a realistic plan. Learning to take things in stride will also help you to be more content and happy which, in turn, will help you to more easily overcome anger and frustration. If you are upset, sad, anxious, or depressed you will have less patience and tolerance for everything and everybody.

Sir when I am working on computer I miss the alphabet for example at 2, 4 min I forget that which alphabet is called a. Same things happen with numbers. My expression are change immediately. And I also can't sleep long time. I wake up 4 5 time on night bt I m feeling so tired. I am thinking so much without any connection and limitations. Is this symptoms for depression. What I do ?which kind of doctor I contact.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
It could be depression if several other symptoms connect. Go to a counselor first and let that person determine if you need to meet with a psychiatrist for medication. If this is a recent phenomenon, then it could be treated early with the prognosis really good. Please do take your parents with you to meet with the counselor and carry all the information about you, from prenatal days till date, including up to your grandparents. If there was any telling event either in your life or that of your family history, then there is a genetic concern that has to be factored in too. The missing numbers and alphabets may not be serious all by itself, but could be of much concern if it is linked to any disturbed condition in you. You can nip it in the bud, if acted upon early.

An employee cannot terminate merely on the basis that a person suffers from psychiatric illness, it should be proved that because of the illness he is unfit for the job. If you go to court, if the company fires you citing psychiatric illnesss as the reason, the court will refer you to a government medical board comprising of psychiatrists for opinion. They will re assess you completely over a period of time and submit their report to the court, based on which the judge will decide. All the best.

Sleep is very important to concentration and short term memory. Are you exercising? A good work out every day will help you sleep well. Shift timings can mess up your circadian cycles to badly impact sleep. Check back and see what has disturbed your preparations recently. Go back to the conditions that suited you earlier. Do group study or attend some tutorials, especially if the exams are approaching shortly. You have been responsible in your plans, so I believe that you can reorganize yourself to sort out this problem.
