I am having mouth ulcer from past 3-4 days . It is very difficult for me to eat due to the pain I am having. I applied clove oil for pain relief. There has been a bit relief. How long will it take to get recovered Is any there better home remedy than this. Waiting for your reply.

Dentist, Greater Noida
Mix one teaspoon of baking soda with a little water to make a thin paste. Dab it on the affected area. Repeat this several times a day. Alternatively, you can simply put baking soda directly on your mouth ulcer. Also apply little honey. It takes 7-10 days to heal.

Hi, Eat a healthy, balanced diet and avoid eating strongly flavoured or spicy food. Cut down on coffee. Drink plenty of water to help prevent your mouth becoming dry. Chew sugar-free gum after eating, to stimulate the flow of saliva. This will help clean away any remaining food particles. Gastritis, lung & sinus infection may also be the cause of bad smell in the mouth. 90% of bad breath is due to a dirty tongue. So use rtongue scraper regularly, If your bad breath is caused by a gastrointestinal problem, such as an H. Pylori infection or gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) you may be referred to a gastroenterologist.

I had dental pain on left upper jaw and upper teethes. My dentist said it is not dental. He said it is due to sinus. I never had sinus before. I am 65. I had severe cold recently. The pain occurred during and before this cold. Tell me what may be the cause and remedy.

Dentist, Alwar
You have two options: get a second opinion ( consult another dentist to confirm if the pain is not of dental origion. Second if . First bit works , consult a general physician , he will most probably advice you to get a PNS View ( kind of x ray radiograph) to diagnose the problem. Hope it worked.

My tooth are yellow I have tried all paste available in market
But no whiteness seen.
Toothpastes wont help you too much. Ultrasonic teeth cleaning and polishing by dentist will remove all the yellow stains on your teeth. If you want dazzling right white teeth, then opt for dental bleaching procedure.

Our baby is 10 mths old and four teeth has emerged. Could you please tell us if we need to brush his teeth as we feel...
Yes you should clean his baby teeth as well. And best way to do it to take a muslin cloth or you can take any soft cloth. Roll it in your first finger and dip this cloth in warm water and start cleaning his teeth, cheeks, gums, tongue. You should do this every time you feed your baby and specially when he is sleeping. If you don't take good care of your cleaning then this will lead to many tooth infection problems and deterioration of your child's teeth.

I got a wisdom tooth but it has not completely come out as there is no space for it to come out as its covered with gums. Due to that got pus as well as swelling. I consulted few dentist & they said to remove the tooth n a surgery is required as they have to cut the bone.

BDS
Dentist, Mumbai
Wisdom teeth which are not fully erupted in the mouth due to lack of space can get infected. They need to be surgically removed by cutting the tooth into pieces. Bone removal if required should be minimum. For further details, you may consult me.

Smile Designing

MDS - Periodontology and Oral Implantology, BDS
Dentist, Mumbai
Smile Designing

There is always the constant attempt to look better and more appealing. To this effect, smile designing is one particular specialty of cosmetic dentistry with the sole aim of improving a person's smile.
Photographs of various angles, jaw tracing analysis, and simulation of images on the computer are all used to arrive at an optimal size, shape, contour of the jaw and the teeth that can produce the best smile for a given patient. These changes are then replicated on paper and tooth models if required and detailed discussion happen with the patient. Thorough patient counseling is done before initiating work at smile designing.

Some parameters that are manipulated to produce a good smile designing are as follows - first the tooth per se followed by the soft tissues:

  1. Tooth color: In most cases, the tooth color is changed using tooth whitening material or laser. Trust the dentist to achieve a balance between whiteness of the tooth and natural look. In some cases, silver amalgam fillings may be replaced with composite restorations to improve the appearance. Bridges with metal backup may be replaced with complete ceramic crowns too.
  2. Tooth alignment: Crooked or misshaped teeth can be corrected using veneers in minor cases and by orthodontic braces in severe cases. Again, if the patient is very conscious, aesthetic ceramic braces (read more about braces) can be used.
  3. Tooth length: If too much or too less of a tooth is showing during a smile, that needs to be corrected too. Longer teeth are considered to produce a younger appearance than short teeth, which usually is associated with old age and wear and tear. The gums can be reshaped as a part of crown lengthening.
  4. Missing teeth: Teeth that are missing produce a very bad smile and need to be replaced at the earliest for a better smile. Depending on various factors including age and bone health, the choice could be a crown or a bridge or an implant.
  5. Tooth ratio: When a person smiles, the front tooth are the most obvious and should have a ratio of length to width as 4 to 5. This produces a balanced smile.
  6. Tooth texture: Mottling or rough edges on the tooth surface can be corrected by veneers or small composite restorations. As regards the soft tissues.
  7. Gum line: The smile is reproduced on tracing and corrections are made to produce a better smile, even if it requires gum corrections.
  8. Fuller lips and cheeks: Surgical procedures or chemicals may be used to produce fuller lips and cheeks that improve a person's smile.

The next time you are not happy with your smile, visit a dentist. With so many parameters that affect your smile, a little correction could produce a better smile! If you wish to discuss about any specific dental problem, you can consult a specilized dentist and ask a free question.

Toothpicks can cause serious damage to our teeth like enamel loss (abrasion), deep gums pockets leading to gum diseases, broken tooth.....so floss is a best alternative to toothpick.

Advanced Aesthetics, BDS
Dentist, Mumbai
Hi, there are various reasons of bad breath, like impurities in blood, inefficient digestive system, dry mouth (lack of saliva production), gum disease, cavities, plaque and tartar formation around teeth and gums, kind of diet, improper brushing / cleaning of mouth etc. I would advise you to get a thorough physical and dental examination to rule out the cause of bad breath and to solve it permanently.

The oral cavity serves as both a site of and a gateway entry of disease for microbial infections, which can affect general health status. In addition, some studies have demonstrated a relationship between periodontal diseases and diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. Furthermore, the report establishes a relationship between oral health and quality of life, including functional, psychosocial, and economic indicators. Poor oral health can affect diet, nutrition, sleep, psychological status, social interaction, school, and work. Protection and control of oral health and diseases safeguards a woman?s health and quality of life before and during pregnancy. Also, it has the potential to decrease the transmission of pathogenic bacteria that occurs from mother to child. Along with pregnancy, come physiological changes for a woman. The changes, including fluctuating hormones, increase the woman?s susceptibility to oral infections such as periodontal disease. This disease impairs the body?s ability to repair and maintain soft tissues. It also causes indirect damage through bacterial induction of both inflammatory and immune responses of the host. During pregnancy, mild inflammation of the gums, ?pregnancy gingivitis, is quite common and if left untreated can lead to periodontal disease. There have been an increased number of studies establishing associations between, periodontal disease and negative health outcomes, which include tooth loss, cardiovascular disease, stroke, poor diabetes control, and adverse birth outcomes. Another notable oral disease pertinent to maternal child health is dental caries. Dental caries is the process of tooth decay, and the development of what is commonly known as cavities. Dental carries are transmitted from mother to child vertically; colonization of cariogenic bacteria primarily occurs from mother to child through saliva-sharing activities. Maternal oral flora can ultimately foretell oral flora in offspring. In addition, other maternal factors such as social, behavioral, and biological factors can predispose a child?s experience with tooth-decay. Some of these factors include the lack of knowledge a mother possesses concerning oral health, which can influence the development of caries among her children. Compared to children whose mothers have good oral health, children whose mothers have bad oral health are five times as likely to have poor oral health.Poor maintenance of oral health has profound implications on the development of children. Oral health affects the quality of life, especially children, with respect to functional, psychological, economic, and overall emotional well-being of an individual.Adverse effects of poor oral health, take for example the consequences a simple cavity can have on a child. First, it is painful. This might cause a child to miss school or have poor concentration, eventually compromising school performance. In addition, due to the pain, it might result in poor weight gain or growth. Also, children may exhibit reduced self-esteem because of cosmetic issues. Furthermore, it can affect language and impair speech. Impaired speech development can also result in low self-esteem. Finally, cavities although easily preventable, can pose a financial burden of a family. Poor oral health permeates into other aspects of life, posing threats to overall well-being, if not handled timely and effectively
