Dear Rash, Stopping antidepressants in 4 months depends on the diagnosis. There are various types of depression - few of them need life long medicines - few of them just for 6 months. Since your doctor knows the diagnosis, please continue the same dose till she/he is available for consultation. She/he might have arrangement with another doctor, please consult her/him. You have taken for 4 months with no major side effect and lot of benefit, please continue till you consult your doctor or her/his standby.

Dear lybrate-user, Alcohol withdrawal can be simple like tremors, sleep disturbance, loose motion, nausea, craving etc. It may be complicated with confusions, disorientation, memory disturbances, hallucinations, illusions, neuropathies, fits etc. So, you need to be assessed for withdrawal symptoms and then treated. More often you may need to be admitted to hospital to control the withdrawal symptoms and regular assessments. Some times you may need high dose of thiamine vitamin by intravenous drip.

MBBS, DPM
Psychiatrist, Bangalore
I am an 24 year old female and a student. I feels sad all the time. I want to know is this a symptom of depression.
Dear Maumita, Feeling sad is not depressive disorder. It is just an emotion. Please answer the following questionnaire to know whether you need to be screened for depression and other medical conditions causing depression. Brief Patient Health Questionnaire (BPHQ) Over the last 2 weeks, how often have you been bothered by any of the following problems? Please mark as 0.Not at all 1.Less than 7 days 2.More than 7 days 3. Nearly every day a. Little interest or pleasure in doing things b. Feeling down, depressed, or hopeless c. Trouble falling or staying asleep or sleeping too much d. Feeling tired or having little energy e. Poor appetite or overeating f. Feeling bad about yourself — or that you are a failure or have let yourself or your family down g. Trouble concentrating on things, such as reading the newspaper or watching television h. Moving or speaking so slowly that other people could have noticed. Or the opposite — being so fidgety or restless that you have been moving around a lot more than usual i. Thoughts that you would be better off dead or of hurting yourself in some way.

I am suffering with Schizophrenia from last 5 years is it curable or I will take medication for lifelong what to do I am in big dilemma I am talking medication for last 5 years.

MBBS, DPM
Psychiatrist, Bangalore
Dear Paramesh, It is nice of you to continuously fight against Schizophrenia by taking medication. Congratulations. Schizophrenia is a lifelong disorder like diabetes or high BP or any other medical illness. Like those medical diseases, schizophrenia also needs life long treatment for quality of your life. The tablets control most of the positive symptoms of schizophrenia like hearing voices, suspecting others and other odd behaviours. Unless these things are kept under control, you will not able to work, make relationships or feel for others or feel safe in this world. Assess how much you have benefitted from treatment in last 5 years. If there are any difficulty in taking medicines, talk to your doctor, she/he will adjust the dose, change the drug or add another drug. Doctors are researching for a permanent cure since many years. Till it comes out, you need to be on regular medication.

Dear lybrate-user, It is nice of you for fighting against depression since 20 years. Doctors are also researching for newer and newer medicines and treatments. It is good that you are finding lamictal useful. Routinely upto 200 mg is prescribed. At times, it may be taken upto 400 mg also. Talk to your doctor and find out. Discuss with your doctor on add ons. Many of them are available like SamE, 5HT, thyroxine, etc. I don't know your age. Yor memory issue and weaknesses may be due to age related other medical disorders. Consult a physician and get investigated for diabetes, dementia etc.

Is advisable to take 2 or 3 pegs alcohol when on Rapilif. Rapilif is being taken at bedtime.

MBBS, DPM
Psychiatrist, Bangalore
Is advisable to take 2 or 3 pegs alcohol when on Rapilif. Rapilif is being taken at bedtime.
Dear Das, It is not advisable to take 2-3 pegs of alcohol DAILY even without Rapilif. Occasionally taking 2-3 pegs, depends on the type of alcohol, the food with it, the duration of drinking, your own health status, how others are finding it unhealthy, whether you have escaped from your routine duties due to it, whether you drive after drinking. Alcohol interacts with many drugs including Rapilif. The interaction depends on the type of alcohol and the dose of the drug, the duration of action of the drug and many other factors. Remember: alcohol deaddiction can be done with anti-craving drugs and aversive drugs and other supportive treatments.
