Only the SSRI group of antidepressants cause sexual problems in few patients. These side effects are temporary. Escitalopram is an SSRI. There are plenty of effective antidepressant that has no sexual side effect. Please discuss with your psychiatrist.

Dear lybrate-user, White layers in the throat may be anything from simple pharyngitis to cancer. It is NOT due to stopping of smoking. It may be due to many cigarettes that you have smoked all these days. Take salt water goggle and if the white layers don't disappear, consult a doctor - preferably an ENT who has mirrors to see inside your throat.

I am 23 years old suffering from OCD for more than 8 years. Currently my treatment is undergoing at a hospital, Kolkata. My doctor has prescribed me these medicines, Zosert 100 mg, Arzu 10 mg and Voxidep 25 mg which I have been taking for 4 and half months. Although the medicines worked on me greatly, during this period, I unexpectedly gained 12 to 15 kgs weight despite maintaining a proper diet. So, my question to you is that do the medicines cause weight gain?

MBBS, DPM
Psychiatrist, Bangalore
Dear lybrate-user, Zosert, Arzu and Voxidep are NOT known to cause weight gain. There could be some other reason like no anxiety of obsessions, made you eat more. Or it could be, no repetitive actions of compulsions, made you burn less calories. However please do not stop these medicines. Please try diet and exercise regime to reduce weight. You have consult the doctor and if necessary check the thyroid profile.

Hi Sir, I have depression from 5 years. Can I take cigarettes. Or I will have problems on taking it.
Dear Nupur, Cigarettes are not a treatment for depression - not for any other condition also. If you smoke, you will get into more problems apart from depression.

I'm a chain smoker from last 6 years. Now I want to shun this habit. Please tell me how to forget this thing?

MBBS, DPM
Psychiatrist, Bangalore
Dear lybrate-user, Please try to stop smoking at the earliest. It has many health benefits in the long run. When you stop suddenly, you may get withdrawal symptoms like restlessness, irritability, lack of concentration, increased hunger, sleep disturbance, headache, impatience, anxiety, depression, etc. If you have them please don’t get back to smoking, take nicotine gum or lozenge or patch. They are available in all medical shops. You don’t need a prescription from doctors. Use 2 mg gum if you smoke less than 25 cigarettes/day. Use 4 mg gum if you smoke more than 25 cigarettes/day. First 6 weeks, use 1 gum every 1 – 2 hours. Reduce it in week 7 – 9 to one gum every 2 – 4 hours. In week 10 – 12, reduce it further to 1 gum every 4 -8 hours. By 3 months, you will be able to stop both cigarettes and gum fully without any withdrawal symptoms. Please feel confident that you can do it and give yourself some gift for doing it like vacation or books or new mobile. Smoking is a chronic relapsing condition like diabetes and B.P. So please don’t worry if you restart smoking. Start all over again to stop. You will learn the situations that make you smoke and avoid them. Please think of health benefits and money saved often. Plan how to avoid relapsing situations, like smoking friends, along with alcohol, stressful feeling or depression. Delay, drink, deep breathe, distract and discuss are the helpful tips. Increase of non smoking zones, gift yourself for stopping smoking. Even chewing cinnamon may delay. Please remember that the urge to smoke comes and goes like waves. Delay and see whether it goes away. It will like a passing cloud.

Dear Manjeet, It is really pathetic to see your father suffering like this. However your doctor seems to be trying few medicines to make him peaceful and sleep better. Be patient and wait for the drugs to work. Since he is already dementing, he does not need much sleep. As age advances, one needs less time for sleep. A bright light like day time and warmth will help sometimes - worth trying.
