Dear lybrate-user, If you are not under ventab plus from feb 2018, it could be one of the symptoms of your depression. But that is not the only symptom. Your doctor will assess you again and prescribe appropriate antidepressant if you are suffering from depression. Some type of depressions need to be covered with antidepressant for a longer time.

Can we use antabuse to stop alcoholism And what are precautions to take for that. Please suggest.

MBBS, DPM
Psychiatrist, Bangalore
Dear lybrate-user, Disulfiram (antabuse) reacts with alcohol to make acetaldehyde which is a poison. So if you take antabuse, you should be absolutely sure that you will not drink alcohol in any form - not even a teaspoonful. Carry with you a card always to say that you are on Antabuse. Inform a close friend and family member that you are on antabuse. However you can not buy antabuse on your own. A psychiatrist only prescribe or dispense it. She/he will give you all the precautions to be taken.

How to stop consumption of alcohol and how to stop permanent alcoholism What should do?

MBBS, DPM
Psychiatrist, Bangalore
Dear lybrate-user, When you go on enhancing your motivational level to stop drinking, it is possible. Doctors can help help you to treat the withdrawal symptoms, give you anti craving tablets or give aversion tablet like Disulfiram also. Of course doctors will investigate and treat the medical and mental disorders associated with alcohol consumption.

I suffer from ODC since long. Having medicines prescribed by psychiatrist, but not getting any relief. I also suffer from depression, panic attack, continuous thoughts etc.

MBBS, DPM
Psychiatrist, Bangalore
Dear lybrate-user, You need to consult the psychiatrist repeatedly. The medicines will be given in low dose initially. After 2-3 weeks it will be increased depending on the effect and side effect. Medicines act only at certain dose. It takes few weeks to fix it. At times you may need therapy along with medicines.

Dear lybrate-user, Health anxiety disorder can be treated with escitalopram, sertraline and clonotril. These tablets take 2-3 weeks to reach the brain. So you have to wait for few weeks to see the results. If the results are not that good, the doctor will increase the dose, add another tablet/therapy or shift to another antidepressant. You need to consult the doctor frequently for better improvement. Please continue exercise and meditation also in addition.

I am a vegetarian since 1995. During this time I got shocked due the prediction of death written in a yearly horoscope by a famous indian astrologer. Since that day I fail very very ill. I couldnt walk alone. Also could not sleep, eat & do anything. Till the year 2000 I didn't know what has happened to me. I was always depressed till that time. So on December 2000 I courage to go to a psychiatric (neuro) and only after that day I could know that what I was suffering is depression. So from that day to till today I am taking serlift 100 mg. Through which I began to feel good & confident. Though I feel good good sometime It gets relapsed time to time. So my doctor advised me to check my thyroid level. I did as I was advised & from that day my doctor prescribed me thyronorm sometime 50 mg and sometime 75 mg with respect to thyroid report. Now its been almost 18 years that I am taking these medicines. Now my question is (1) is it safe for me to take these drugs for life-time as told me by my doctor. (2) Is there no way I could be treated safely as I sometime feel taking these medicine for lifetime is not good.(3) How regularly I have to consult the doctors, as I usually visit him in a year, as it takes me full day to go there and come back which is far away from my locality. There isno psychiatric doctors till some months ago. Now I saw one. So kindly advised me what am I to do to overcome this problem which I sometime feel gets relapsed again. Right now I am 48 years age. I have a wife who is a govt nurse, 2 daughters 13 years and 17 years and a mom of 78 years at home. I work in a government department as clerk therefore I request here as what am I supposed to do to overcome this problem. As I know whenever I tried to discontinue this medicine I used to fall sick again. I used to think a lot but not intensionally but it comes itself automatically. Please advise me and help that how to correct myself.

Dear lybrate-user, You have hypothyroid problem that needs life long replacement by thyronorm. The dose of thyronorm will be decided by TSH level and your clinical condition. It can be done by any MBBS doctor. You can consult the doctor where your wife is working. It can be done once in 3 - 6 months or if needed in between. You have another problem - it may be recurrent major depressive disorder or dysthymia. Both are life long disorders needing life long treatment. Please ask the same MBBS doctor of your wife's hospital to prescribe Sertraline 100 mg for you. You need to go for check up of side effects every 3 months. You need to take the trouble of consulting psychiatrist, only if your local doctor gives a referral. It may happen when you develop some other medical or surgical disorder and you are depressed in spite of Sertraline 100 mg. This kind of situations are rare to occur. Under the district mental health programme, every doctor at Primary health centre (PHC) will be trained to treat depression and dispense sertraline and thyronorm. You have a right to demand. Occasionally if the PHC does not have these drugs, they may prescribe the drug outside. You can buy for short time of 10 days till the hospital gets the drug. Sometime instead of Sertraline, Fluoxetine 20 mg will be supplied, It is also a good antidepressant.

Dear lybrate-user, Delusional disorder needs to be diagnosed properly and treated with antipsychotics and cognitive therapy. Alcohol is NOT a treatment for sleep and overthinking or delusional disorder. Please consult a psychiatrist and get diagnosed and treated for both alcohol dependence and delusional disorder.

I was prescribed clonotril .now I am unable to get rid of habit .now doctor has advised me zolfresh .wat do you think I must do. My weight is constantly increasing and moment I stop clonotril I get depressive symptoms.

MBBS, DPM
Psychiatrist, Bangalore
Dear Ved, Clonotril is a benzodiazepine - probably you have become dependent on it. If you want to stop it, try Zolfresh instead of clonotril. Better still try an antidepressant. After 3 weeks, you will be able to stop clonotril without becoming depressed.

I am a male senior citizen. I was recently diagnosed with early stage of depression and was prescribed one 25 mg tablet of Abbot's Prothiaden before bedtime. I have noticed dampening of sexual desire. Would also like to know if long term use of this medicine has side effects.

Dear Sachdeva, Dampening of sexual desire is one of the side effect of Prothiaden. But, is that affecting your life more than depression? Long term side effects are there. But that can be assessed periodically, if you want to live without depression. Depression is common in senior citizens.
