Hi I was suffered from OCD and I took a lot of medicine for it recently I went for CBT now I feel fine but medicines create a lot of sexual problem in me I stopped medicine also but I still face sexual problem now Dr. prescribed megalis or caverta but I afraid that I will become addict of these medicines in future without these medicines I cannot go for sexual intercourse and how long a man can take these medicines.

MBBS, DPM
Psychiatrist, Bangalore
Dear lybrate-user, if you have stopped ocd medicine, it will not have any sexual side effect. Your doctor has diagnosed your sexual problem and prescribed megalis. No one can become an addict to megalis or coverta. It is drug used only at the time of sexual activity. Please talk to your doctor about the diagnosis of sexaul problems in you. If it is a lifelong problem, you can go on taking provided you don't have any contraindication to megalis. Most probably, it may be a temporary problem. You may use once or twice and then get erection on your own.

My sister aged 29 went into depression during 2015 applied allopathy for two years she was married in 2017 now again in 2018 she went also depression again using allopathy will it effect to her children (I. E any mental illnesses, autism, bipolar disorder, zero intelligence etc) her weight 100 kgs. Kindly advise me how to avoid all these problems to her children.

My sister aged 29 went into depression during 2015 applied allopathy for two years she was married in 2017 now again ...
Dear lybrate-user, It is nice of you to help your sister and her children. Does she have children already or she will be planning a child now? Let her pregnancy be planned. Let her reduce and stop allopathy medicines after she gets out of depression. That will help the possibility of drug induced problems in future child. Please talk to your sister and brother-in-law about it. Or let them talk to the psychiatrist about it. If she has a bipolar or recurrent depression, it runs in families. With her 100 kg weight and second episode, it looks bipolar. Discuss with the doctor. I hope your brother-in-law is not your blood relative, like cousin. His blood relatives, if not having any depression or suicide, it is less likely for children to get mental illness.

Hello doctor My friend aged 70 years was treated for schizophrenia for several years She suddenly developed a liver condition with jaundice an off shoot of which was a growth in her brain and she died within a few days of diagnosis I forgot the medical term Could overdose of schizophrenia medicines cause that and consequently death? Thank you for your time Rose.

MBBS, DPM
Psychiatrist, Bangalore
Dear lybrate-user, Schizophrenia needs long term treatment. Long term treatment has long term side effects. Usually they are NOT fatal. There are drugs that pass through liver, making it work more. But there are drugs that does not pass through liver, like Paliperidone. It is given during jaundice period. The doctor treating your friend knows about the drugs and its long term side effects. She/ he would not prescribe overdose. Payal might have taken overdose herself. The doctor checks up during every visit for long term side effects and detects it much earlier before jaundice develops. I don't know how many before jaundice.

I am 60 years old not enjoying sexual life please provide a solution. I am having the habit of smoking.

I am 60 years old not enjoying sexual life please provide a solution. I am having the habit of smoking.
Dear lybrate-user, Smoking causes many changes in blood vessels. Sexual erection is blood flowing through penis. So quitting smoking will be helpful in your case and age. But there may be other causes for non enjoyment of sex. Please consult a psychiatrist and make a diagnosis. Solution depends on the diagnosis.

I seem to be having terrible mood swings lately. I have been prescribed bupropion last week. Is it the result of it?

MBBS, DPM
Psychiatrist, Bangalore
I seem to be having terrible mood swings lately. I have been prescribed bupropion last week. Is it the result of it?
Dear lybrate-user, Why was bupropion prescribed for you? It may be for depression. It might take 2-3 weeks to take antidepressant action. Till then your mood will not be stabilised. Occasionally, you may have a manic switch, if you have bipolar depression and you were prescribed bupropion without any mood stabiliser. Contact your doctor earlier than the date given to you.

I'm facing postpartum depression problem. I'm used omega 3 fatty acid it's useful or not.

I'm facing postpartum depression problem. I'm used omega 3 fatty acid it's useful or not.
Dear Sandy, It depends on the severity of depression. If your depression is moderate to severe, omega 3 alone will not be helpful. Probably you need to take antidepressant. Please consult your doctor. A depressed mother cannot give full care for the newborn that needs total care.

I am 43, primary hypertensive. Been smoking like 15 - 20 cigs almost for past 20 odd years. Now I want to quit - for reasons of primarily physiological health but also to achieve greater harmony and reduced life friction over domestic, psychological and financial areas, as well as to boost self-confidence and maybe even personal dignity. I come from a Sikh family, though clean shaven and liberal. How can you help me quit smoking?

MBBS, DPM
Psychiatrist, Bangalore
Dear lybrate-user, Congratulations for quitting smoking. You have already listed out its many benefits. Please try to stop smoking at the earliest. It has many health benefits in the long run. When you stop suddenly, you may get withdrawal symptoms like restlessness, irritability, lack of concentration, increased hunger, sleep disturbance, headache, impatience, anxiety, depression, etc. If you have them please don’t get back to smoking, take nicotine gum or lozenge or patch. They are available in all medical shops. You don’t need a prescription from doctors. Use 2 mg gum if you smoke less than 25 cigarettes/day. Use 4 mg gum if you smoke more than 25 cigarettes/day. First 6 weeks, use 1 gum every 1 – 2 hours. Reduce it in week 7 – 9 to one gum every 2 – 4 hours. In week 10 – 12, reduce it further to 1 gum every 4 -8 hours. By 3 months, you will be able to stop both cigarettes and gum fully without any withdrawal symptoms. Please feel confident that you can do it and give yourself some gift for doing it like vacation or books or new mobile. Smoking is a chronic relapsing condition like diabetes and B.P. So please don’t worry if you restart smoking. Start all over again to stop. You will learn the situations that make you smoke and avoid them. Please think of health benefits and money saved often. Plan how to avoid relapsing situations, like smoking friends, use of alcohol, stressful feeling or depression. Delay, drink, deep breathe, distract and discuss are the helpful tips. Increase of non smoking zones, gift yourself for stopping smoking. Even chewing cinnamon may delay. Please remember that the urge to smoke comes and goes like waves. Delay and see whether it goes away. It will be like a passing cloud.

I am taking some medicine for the skin allergy and abdomen issue. Can I start medicine stalopam 10 mg for depression? Is it ok or will it create some issue.

MBBS, DPM

I am taking some medicine for the skin allergy and abdomen issue. Can I start medicine stalopam 10 mg for depression?...
Dear lybrate-user, Please give all the details of skin allergy and other complimentary treatments that you are taking. Few of these tablets have interaction with stalopam. On the other hand, some skin problem leads to depression. Depression needs to be treated.

My close friend's son aged about 39 years is having depression since last 10 to 12 years and the patient taken treatment from different doctors in 3 to 4 hospitals but at the time of taking medicine he is little bit ok but after he leave the medicine it will comes to previous stage. There is some gap between every time he leave and refuse to take the medicine. Now after almost 1 year again they started to take treatment to him, becoz once again he is murmuring with action some times daily, not sleeping properly and abusing over phone to somebody unnecessarily. So, no other option his parents once again started the treatment. Now, the Doctor prescribed the tablets. (1) Cncalm Plus 1-0-1 (2) Soltus 50 mg 0-0-1 (3) Oleanz 2.5 mg 1-0-1. But ongoing taking medicine since one month 10 to 20% better. Now, Trinicalm Plus instead of Cncalm Plus due non-availability of tablets. Is it ok Trinicalm Plus? And the patient is the main earning person in their home, now he is not working since long. Sir, there is no permanent solution for the disease? Or please suggest best medicine for the depression and urgent cure which will be most helpful to their family. Awaiting for your favourable reply Sir.

Thank you Lybrate user for taking interest in Ragavendra. Most probably Ragavendra is suffering from Schizophrenia - Not depression. Please talk to his doctor about the diagnosis. Most persons living with schizophrenia need to be on medicines for their life. Only the dosage and type of antipsychotic will change. if he goes on refusing tablets, it is better to give long acting injectable antipsychotic. He will relapse into disorder if he stops medicines. Then he will not work and earn. There is no urgent and permanent cure for schizophrenia. If he repeatedly goes to the same doctor, the drug and dose will be appropriate soon. A new doctor will start with low dose and go slow with treatment. He can take trinicalm plus instead of cncalm plus.

Dear Arjun, Your x ray will show clear air areas and cloudy areas. It will not show smoking as such. There can be other causes for the same disturbance in x ray.
