Tongue and Ceiling of my mouth always feels dry like cotton from past nearly one year. I smoke two cigarettes daily not more than that. Few days back one of my dentist friend observed that this is smoker's palate but I am not convinced as I am not a chain smoker. Please suggest what should be done to treat this problem. I never feel comfortable.

BDS
Dentist, Vadodara
Smoker's palate can be caused even if you are not a chain smoker. Dry mouth is also a side effect of smoking. Please consult a dentist and get a complete check up done. These may also be the initial symptoms of oral cancer, so I would suggest you waste no time.

Munching foods like apples, pears, carrots or celery after brushing can help in preventing discoloration
Munching foods like apples, pears, carrots or celery after brushing can help in preventing discoloration as they trigger tooth-bathing saliva which helps in keeping the teeth whiter.

I have bleeding when I did brushing, and many times I have poor smell in my mouth, please tell me what should I do.
- use a soft toothbrush -- and brush properly! brush your teeth for at least two minutes twice a day and after meals. Hard brushing can further damage the soft tissues of your mouth. - floss at least once a day and be sure to floss beyond the gum line to remove more plaque. - control bleeding by applying pressure to the area with a cold compress. - rinse with salt water or hydrogen peroxide to keep the area clean. Avoid mouthwashes that contain alcohol, which can dry out your mouth. - stay away from smoking and other tobacco products, which can aggravate bleeding gums. - eat a balanced diet and limit snacking between meals. Carbohydrates and sugars feed dental plaque. - try an oral irrigation device, commonly known as a" water pick, to clear debris from around the gum line. - you may need deep cleaning along with surgical curettage or gum strengthening procedure. Use pepsodent tooth paste & gum paint for 2 to 3 weeks. Advance procedures can be done with laser.

Yellowish colour on the back side of your teeth are basically stains and calculus present on your teeth. They r present more on inner surface of tooth. You require scaling by a dentist.

Don't ignore gum disease

Hi I am 22 yrs old. My teeth are yellow and lower front teeth are having black plaque like material on edges, how can I make bright white and clean.

BDS
Dentist, Delhi
Hi . This is due to accumulation of plaque and tartar on you teeth. That may appear yellow, brown and black in colour. You need to get your teeth cleaned(scaling) and polished. That will solve your problem majorly. After that if you would like to change the hue of your teeth much whiter you can go for teeth whitening(bleaching).

Habits which can destroy your smile!

BDS
Dentist, Mumbai
Habits which can destroy your smile!

1. Not flossing
Brushing your teeth twice a day is important, but many patients don't realize that flossing at least once a day is just as critical to achieving - and maintaining - a healthy smile. Flossing removes the cavity-causing bacteria left behind from food particles that get stuck between teeth.

2. Brushing too soon after eating
Consuming acidic foods and beverages, such as sports and energy drinks, citrus fruits, wine, and tomatoes, can erode tooth enamel - the glossy outer layer of the tooth. Brushing your teeth too soon after eating and drinking these items can cause more damage because you are essentially brushing the acid into the teeth, not getting rid of it. Instead, you should rinse your mouth with water after consuming acidic foods and beverages and wait at least 30 minutes before brushing your pearly whites!

3. Not replacing your toothbrush often enough
Not only are old toothbrushes ineffective, but they also harbor harmful bacteria that can cause infections. Toothbrushes should be changed every three to four months.

4. Excessively bleaching your teeth
Overzealous bleaching can cause your teeth to look unnaturally white and increase tooth sensitivity. Before using an at-home bleaching product, talk to your dentist.

5. Using a hard-bristled toothbrush
A hard-bristled toothbrush coupled with an aggressive brushing technique can cause irreversible damage to your gums. Use a soft toothbrush and gently brush your teeth at a 45-degree angle, in a circular motion. Using a back-and-forth, the sawing motion causes the gums to recede, and can expose the root of the tooth, making teeth extremely sensitive.

Is It Time for Braces?

Is It Time for Braces?
Is It Time for Braces?
This is the most worrying question for parents.
By age 12 or 13, most kids will have lost all of their baby teeth and will be having a full set of adult teeth. Around this time, some parents will start to notice that their preteen’s smile isn’t looking so straight anymore. If your child’s smile is starting to appear a bit crowded or crooked, it might be time for you to seek out a orthodontist for braces. Orthodontic problems—or problems dealing with the alignment of the teeth and shape of the jaw—are common in preteens. In fact, almost half of preteens need braces or some other kind of orthodontic treatment. If you’re concerned about your child’s smile, ask your dentist today.
When should you seek orthodontic treatment for your kids? The answer is as soon as possible. As kids enter their late teen years, jaw growth slows and the bones holding the teeth in place begin to harden and set. Once in adulthood, the jaw stops growing altogether. Adults can successfully shape their smile with orthodontic treatment, but they may have to use a retainer for the rest of their life. Many experts feel that the earlier orthodontic treatment can begin, the better the outcome. Before braces, however, your child may need to wait until all 28 of their adult teeth have grown in. And sometimes orthodontic problems don’t even appear until later into the teen years. Just keep an eye on those teeth and see an orthodontist as soon as you start to think there could be a problem.
In some cases, if parents see that at a age earlier than 11 years, there is too much misalignment of teeth, as they are erupting, it is best to ask your dentist if some intervention is needed to stop a problem from worsening.

Every day I brushing my teeth but they did not change white colour and also smell is coming out when I talking.

BDS
Dentist,
Every day I brushing my teeth but they did not change white colour and also smell is coming out when I talking.
Hi, the yellow color of your teeth might be because of stains which can be superficial and deep or even it might be the natural hue of your teeth. If the they stains are superficial they can be removed by a complete scaling procedure. Deeper stains can be removed by bleaching which can also lighten the yellow shade of your teeth to a certain extent. Bad smell from the mouth can be caused due to various reasons like, 1) tartar deposition in the teeth 2) smoking and pan chewing 3) dry moth due to reduce secretion of saliva 4) due to ulcers in the stomach its advisable to consult your dentist and get your condition treated accordingly. If you wish you can consult with me privately for further help.

Crocin or ibuprofen plus suspension less than 5 ml at a time may reduce symptoms of pain and fever to some extent and temporarily. Problem looks like some infection connected with throat with lymphnode child may require appropriate antibiotics on advise of a doctor on direct examination and proper diagnosis.
