For a diabetic it is best advised to have a diet planned as per the sugar levels, lifestyle and history. Though you can follow some guidelines - have small frequent meals. Do not fast for more than 2-3 hours. Avoid a very heavy meal at one time. Avoid fruit juices, aerated drinks or sugarcane juice, honey, jaggery or sugar. Fruits should be had as a mid meal. Avoid junk foods. Exercise and stay active. Do not attempt to try out too many remedies as you could go into hypoglycaemia. Sleep well. It's all a matter of discipline.

FCCP (USA), MD - Pulmonary Medicine

TB is an important cause of infertility in India. You must get a thorough gynecological evaluation including USG abdomen, Hysterosalpingography, menstrual blood testing etc. Treatment is same as for pulmonary TB and highly effective.

For diabetes follow a diet low in carbohydrate, low in fat and high in fibre. Avoid bakery products. Avoid too much rice and potato. Avoid fried stuff. Avoid chocolate, cakes, ice cream, soft drinks and fruit juices. Eat lots of vegetables. Walk for at least 30 minutes a day for 5 days in a week.

Diabetes can be controlled/managed by a proper regulated diet and exercise. 1. Eat every two hours mini meals. Don't eat big meals. Take more green vegetables/salads. 2. Eat whole grain food/grains like ragi, wheat, jowar instead of refined grains like maida/ sooji/ white bread etc. 3. Reduce foods with high GI Index like potato, white rice, banana, mango. 4. Avoid all forms of simple sugars like Colas, juices, sweets, cakes, biscuits, pizzas, noodles etc. 5. Eat daily fruits with low/medium GI index like apple, guava, mosambi, orange. 6. Eat lot of proteins like dals, sprouts, egg, chicken etc with every minimeal. 7. Drink lot of water. One glass every hour. 8. Do at least 30-45 mins of exercise everyday.

Why are sugars added to foods? Are sugars safe to eat? How does the body use sugars?

Why are sugars added to foods? Are sugars safe to eat? How does the body use sugars?
Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. All starchy food that we eat like rice, chapati, roti (jowar or bajra or makai), other cereals like millets, potato, beet root, sweet potato and sugar as well as jaggery get converted to glucose after digestion. So whether one takes a roti or rice or sugar everything is converted to glucose and absorbed. Sugar is added or eaten because people like sweet taste. Thanks.

I am a diabetic and under medication since last 3 years. But my glycosylated hb (hba1c) remains around 8-9. I am using amaryl-m2 twice and januvia 100 mg. I am also using bp medicine telma am.

Having an hba1c between 8-9 shows that you are uncontrolled inspite of treatment and indicates that you are open to the complications of diabetes due to this uncontrolled state. Hba1c is an average of blood glucose over a span of 3 months. As hba1c starts to increase from 7.3 % onward the contribution of sugar disequilibrium is mostly contributed by raised fasting glucose rather than post meals blood glucose. If I ask you to check your sugars regularly- you will find your fasting glucose much raised than your post meals glucose. Hence you require change in the medicines that focus more on your fasting glucose and that will bring your hba1c down to the target of 7%.

Diabetes cannot be cured but it's complications can be prevented by following healthy lifestyle. Avoid sugar, white rice and maida. Eat fruits in between meals and not after 7pm . Prefer small meals but in a frequent pattern. Brisk walking for atleast 30min a day for 5 days a week. medicine can be prescribed after consultation.

I am 35 years old and have gone through hBa1c test last week. I got 6.3 which says I have good control over Diabetes. But I don't take any Diabetes medicine. Do I have Diabetes?

Mr. lybrate-user Thanks for the query. HbA1c% 6.3 suggests you are in a pre-diabetic state. Which means in the near future you are likely to develop diabetes. When HbA1c% crosses 6.5 % and above diabetes is diagnosed. Pre-diabetes is a state which alerts one to take necessary care and prevent future progression to diabetes. So if you maintain a healthy modified lifestyle with proper balanced diet, regular exercise and weight control, you can prevent getting diabetes. Thanks.
