How often should I test my blood sugar, and what should I do if it is too high or too low?

MBBS, DNB (General Medicine)
Endocrinologist, Delhi
How often should I test my blood sugar, and what should I do if it is too high or too low?
Your question doesn't state whether you are a diabetic or not. So I will answer for both situations. If you are not a diabetic, fasting sugar twice on separate occasions is enough to know whether you need to be tested further for diabetes or not. Cut off value for fasting sugar is 126 mg/dl. If sugar on 2 occasions is beyond this then you need treatment. If on the other hand you are a diabetic, then you need a much more extended profile. You need 4 readings in a day to know the trend of your control. Fasting, 2 hrs after breakfast, 2 hrs after lunch and 2 hrs after dinner. I would recommend that you depend on your physician for management of these reports. But if the sugar at anytime is below 70mg/dl then immediately take glucose for avoiding crisis.

2 days 103 degrees f not responding at all to paracetamol 500 mg 4 times over 2 days should need a routine report on your blood counts especially platelets. A peripheral smear report is also needed. If these reports show something positive then consult accordingly to your physician.

Insulin is produced by pancreas and not liver. If you are early diabetic patient then it can be controlled by diet and exercise

lybrate-user, When glucose level goes too low (hypoglycemia), then there is counter regulatory mechanism activated in the body. This leads to release of a hormone Glucagon from alpha cells in the pancreas. That hormone causes breakdown of glycogen in the liver, producing glucose, which in turn increases blood glucose. Body can not tolerate low glucose state for long time. Hence, this counter regulatory mechanism is activated. Thanks.

Am very sorry, but presently there is no cure for diabetes. You can however, keep the diabetes under control. Diet and exercise are the mainstay of the treatment. By following a good healthy lifestyle, the dosage requirement will definitely reduce.

THE SYMPTOMS OF TYPE 2 DIABETES

General Physician (AM)
Alternative Medicine Specialist, Chandigarh
THE SYMPTOMS OF TYPE 2 DIABETES
The symptoms of diabetes include feeling very thirsty, passing more urine than usual and feeling tired all the time.
The symptoms occur because some or all of the glucose stays in your blood and isn’t used as fuel for energy.
Your body will try to get rid of the excess glucose in your urine.
The main symptoms include:
urinating more often than usual, particularly at night

feeling very thirsty

feeling very tired

unexplained weight loss

itching around the penis or vagina, or frequent episodes of thrush

cuts or wounds that heal slowly

blurred vision (caused by the lens of the eye becoming dry)

The signs and symptoms of type 2 diabetes aren't always as obvious, and it's often diagnosed during a routine check-up.
This is because the symptoms are often mild and develop gradually over a number of years.
This means that you may have type 2 diabetes for many years without realising it.
Early diagnosis and treatment for type 2 diabetes is very important because it may reduce your risk of developing complications later on.
Visit your GP as soon as possible if you think you may have diabetes.

I am 60 years diabetic man. My sugar levels are 132 fasting. Pp is 180. I am suffering pain at waist since 20 days. Uric acid is 8.3. How to reduce that pain. Please guide me.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
For the pain you can take an nsaid dicloran 1-0-1. Will need to reduce urica acid send the reports and ask privately. It is not as easy task to control blood sugar in the desired normal range. Whatever we eat is metabolized to sugar in the body to provide energy for our daily activities. For the absolute control, one has to monitor his / her blood sugar at regular intervals (self-monitoring of blood glucose? smbg). Though difficult, this can be done by a glucometer and keep a record. Get an idea of fasting sugar (fbs) and 2 hours after food (ppbs) and check before dinner and after every major food. The basic idea is to reduce the food intake to 1/3 of what you take now. The dictum of sugar control is diet, exercise, diet + medicine and at later stage medicine+ insulin will be needed. For sugar control there is the need for regular advice and follow up. Just one time consultation or advice is not enough to guide a diabetic in scientifically & medically correct manner. For giving you regular follow up you ask me privately with all details like your daily eating pattern and medicines you take. I assure you a proper guidance. If you keep in touch.

I am a diabetic and daily taking Zorryl M3 Forte twice, Zeta50 once in morning and lantus insulin upto 40 unit. But even after taking all these medicine and insulin, my sugar level remains in the range of 160-180 in fasting. What else I have to do to maintain it in the range of 110-120. Even when, I take three bread in night along with vegetable, fasting sugar goes upto 180 and when I take only one bread it remains 160 or sometimes comes down to 155 in fasting. But when I take only Salad in dinner, I feel comfortable with sugar level 140 in fasting. Whether a diabetic person can survive with only salad in dinner without any grain food, if possible, please suggest.

For diabetes follow a diet low in carbohydrate, low in fat and high in fibre. Avoid bakery products. Avoid too much rice and potato. Avoid fried stuff. Avoid chocolate, cakes, ice cream, soft drinks and fruit juices. Eat lots of vegetables. Walk for at least 30 minutes a day for 5 days in a week. Medicine and insulin will work better if you follow diet and exercise. You can have more of salad and protein and less of carbohydrate in dinner.
