I am 19 year old male. I am suffering from cold for last 1-2months. I have taken insulins and steams but nothing happened. What should I do?

AUTLS, CCEDM, MD - Internal Medicine, MBBS
General Physician, Faridabad
There are several things you can do to prevent a cold—they are all easy and inexpensive and worth the effort. Wash your hands often-with soap and warm water. The germs stick to the soap and get washed down the drain. Always wash your hands after coughing or sneezing into your hands, blowing your nose, after touching someone who is sick, or when using public restrooms or telephones. Cover Your Mouth and Nose When You Sneeze or Cough- Clean your hands every time you cough or sneeze. Avoid Touching Your Eyes, Nose, or Mouth-Germs are often spread when a person touches a contaminated surface and then touches their eyes, nose, or mouth. Stay Home When You’re Sick-Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, don’t smoke, manage stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food so you can fend off viruses. Take healthy balanced boiled eggs.daily in breakfast .. Avoid people who have a cold or cold symptoms. Routinely clean and disinfect common areas of your home. Treatment:There is a gradual 1-3 day onset of symptoms. It often starts out as a sore throat, then a fever and coughing. As the cold progresses, the nasal mucus may thicken which is the last stage before the cold dries up. A cold usually lasts for a week or two. But, taking good care of yourself at home can relieve symptoms and help prevent complications if you are otherwise healthy. Unless you develop complications, you shouldn’t need medical treatment. Complications include bacterial infections of the ears, throat, sinuses or lungs which must be treated with antibiotics. In general you should: • get plenty of rest so your body can use its energy to fight the cold • staying at home will keep you from spreading germs • drink plenty of liquids like herbal tea or hot broth/vegetable/tomato soups. Avoid foods or drinks with caffeine which can keep you from getting enough sleep Runny Nose and Sneezing- if you have post nasal drip, gargle to keep from getting a sore throat. Drink extra fluids. (avoid sugary and high calorie drinks) Use saline nasal sprays or nasal irrigation • Tablet Nasorest-P once/twice daily may reduce the amount of mucous. • Humidify the rooms you are in most or your whole house if possible. • Do steam inhalation once or twice daily Cough-Coughing is how your body gets rid of debris and mucus from the airways during a viral infection. Unless your cough is severe or is keeping you from resting at night, it is better not to treat it. A severe cough can be treated with a cough syp, but don’t try to completely stop the cough. There are two types of coughs. Productive and non-productive or dry cough. Non-productive, dry cough. A dry, hacking cough may develop near the end of a cold. Dry coughs that follow viral colds are often worse at night and can last up to several weeks. Take syrup Alex-D for a dry cough. Cough drops can sooth an irritated throat, but most don’t affect the cough. Productive cough. A productive cough is one that brings up mucus from the back of the throat or the lungs. Productive coughs should not be suppressed to the point they no longer bring up mucus. Use syrup Alex. Drink lots of water if you have a productive cough. Head and Body Aches- Take tablet dolo-650 mg for fever once or twice daily

I am a diabetes patient. My PP is 410. I am suffering from cough and cold. Can anybody suggest a medicine for me.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
Mr. Lybrate-user, your cough can be easily managed with some specific antibiotics and cough syrup, but most important is to control diabetes effectively, because 410 mg blood glucose is one of the main reasons for inviting infections and aggravating those. Plus at such a young age it absolutely essential for you achieve a very strict glucose control. Fasting should be around 100 mg and pp 150 to 160 mg/100 ml. Hba1c%<6.8. So please take care of that. It may be necessary to upgrade current treatment, with some additional drugs. It will be good if you come with all the details as mentioned above plus dietary pattern and extent of daily exercise. Thanks.

Influenza Vaccine - Why is it Important for Kids?

Senior Residency, MD - Paediatrics, MBBS
Pediatrician, Gurgaon
Influenza Vaccine - Why is it Important for Kids?

Influenza is more commonly known as the flu. It is an infection that affects the respiratory system and is caused by the influenza virus. This injection is recommended for kids who are under the age of 6 months. It ensures that the baby is safeguarded from the virus during an influenza outbreak. Since the nature of virus changes year on year, the immunity doesn’t last for more than 1 year. This vaccination is ideally taken during the month of October and November. The effect of the vaccination typically lasts for 6-8 months.

Ideally, kids who have never had a flu vaccination should take 2 vaccinations within 4 weeks. Kids who have received a shot of flu should undertake this vaccination once in a year. This arrangement is ideal up to 9 years of age. Flu shot is extremely important for a kid due to the following reasons:

  • It saves a kid from chronic lung and heart disorders such as asthma and cystic fibrosis
  • Kids suffering from immune deficiency, cancer, and HIV should take this vaccination to avoid further complication of the existing disease
  • Kids suffering from diabetes, kidney diseases, and metabolic disorders should go for this vaccination without a second thought
  • Kids suffering from a neurological disorder, haemoglobin deficiency, and anaemia should take this vaccination to refrain from the risk of aggravation of the present disease
  • Pregnant women should ideally take it for the safeguarding the fetus

Flu shot should not be taken be taken if:
1. A baby is under the age of 6 months.
2. The baby has thimerosal allergy.

Is flu shot safe?
The flu shot is considered to be very safe. It does not result in flu. Few side effects include:
a. Soreness of the place where the needle is injected. This doesn’t last for more than a couple of day.
b. Body ache and mild fever for the first couple of days after the vaccination is done.
c. There is little to no pain in the place where the injection is injected by the doctor.

What is nasal flu vaccine?
This is an influenza dose that is not injected into the body, but given in the form of nasal spray. Healthy kids above the age of 2 years are fit to get this injection. For those kids who have a history of chronic illness should check with their doctor to go ahead with nasal spray. Each dose is given in each nostril. Like the influenza vaccine, nasal flu vaccine should be undertaken once for those who have already taken this dose once. Kids who have not undergone this vaccination are eligible for 2 dosages each 4 weeks apart from each other. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor.

Symptoms and Treatment: Influenza

MD - General Medicine, DTM & H
Internal Medicine Specialist, Motihari
Symptoms and Treatment: Influenza

Influenza or seasonal flu is basically a viral infection. It is different from common flu that accounts for many conditions that occur due to changing weather. These conditions include cold, stomach problems and fever. Influenza or flu comes with a variety of symptoms and is primarily caused by a virus due to lack of precautions taken as far as food and outings go, during the changing seasons.

Let us find out more about the symptoms and treatment:

  • Symptoms: The main symptoms of this condition include fever, an aching body, dullness, fatigue, dry hacking coughs, a sore throat and even headaches. Appetite loss and drowsiness are also some symptoms of the condition.
  • Causes: Influenza is usually caused by either of the two influenza viruses, such as virus A or Virus B. The strains of these viruses are known to change every year.
  • Congestion: The main form of treatment revolves around treating the congestion that may have occurred in the nasal or the sinus tracts. The treatment for this is usually done with the help of nasal decongestants or sprays which can be used for a few days to get relief until the infection and congestion leaves the body. One must avoid the use of these decongestants for prolonged periods of time as they can make the condition reoccur again and again.
  • Allergies: Histamine is the chemical that the body produces automatically when an allergy hits. This is what causes influenza and hay fever as well. One can get treated with the help of anti-histamine drugs that will be prescribed for the doctor in case an allergic reaction or hay fever is detected. This drug can cause severe drowsiness, so it is best to take it at night and wake up fresh in the morning.
  • Blood Pressure and Other Complications: It is important to know what kind of medication you are allergic to, before you ingest anything or take a spray. If you are suffering from high blood pressure or any other cardiovascular complications, then you may want to steer clear of decongestants as these sprays can increase the blood pressure as well as the heart rate of the patient.
  • Cough: In order to cure a cough, one can take a cough medicine that will also have anti-histamines and analgesics, which will help in clearing the pollutants, dirt and allergens that have caused the cough.
  • Fever: In case you are experiencing fever and body ache, you can take aspirin or acetaminophen. However, this should be avoided by children.

With the treatment, one should take ample precautions while stepping out the home. Also, the patient should be careful about the dosage to avoid an overdose. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor.

Age 66 yrs. I suffered paralytic stroke but recovered and still weak and on medicines like Telma 20, deplatt A 75 mg, Calaptin 40 mg, Avas 5 mg and My TSH is 4.46 as such my Doctor advised me to take every morning on empty stomach Eltroxin 25 mcg. Last month I was feeling weak so Dr. said my BP was showing 125/ 64 as such asked me to stop taking Telma 20 and check BP everyday and asked to take Telma 20 only on the day my BP shows 140/90 or higher. Dr. said because I'm taking Eltroxin 25 mcg and after breakfast Telma 20 as such BP is showing less and it's not good because as a TIA stroke patient my BP should be above 140/90. So since 1 month everyday I'm checking my BP and the day I see 140/90 I'm taking Telma BP tablet. Everything was going fine. But since 1 week I started getting pains in my neck, shoulder. I feel nerves pulling at back of my head to neck and shoulders and also a nerve near my breast is also pulling and paining since few days. But since 4 days the pain has moved into my head and I feel heaviness as the nerves from head are pulling to back of head then to neck shoulders and going to the breast where a nerve near my nipple is pulling and paining. I have spondylitis also. So I thought may be because of spondylitis the pain is. The pain is not continuous only for some time but comes on and off. Especially troubling my sleep in the night. This morning I visited my Dr. and he gave me 15 days medicines and asked me not to worry. Please see the medicines what Dr. has given as I'm really getting worried about my health because something or the other health problem is coming as one problem is gone a new problem is ready. I'm very depressed about my health please help. Today's 15 days medicines for this pulling in head nerves pain in neck shoulders and nerve pulling in breast are Omnacortil 10 tablet, Razo 20 tablet and Divalgress ER 250 all these to be used for 15 days. Doctor do you think because I stopped BP tablet new problem started or as my Dr. advised take BP tablet only when my BP is high is OK or NO? Hello, For body built with young look try to take Folic acid and vitamin B-12 are B vitamins that play an important role in metabolism (the pace of your body’s processes) and production of blood cells. Try drinking 8 eight-ounce glasses of water each day. It helps you re-energize and keep going. Not drinking enough fresh water can lead to acne, headaches, weakness and even dehydration. Do this, and you'll become a very healthy person. Have physicals regularly.
