Dengue: Facts and prevention measures

Dengue: Facts and prevention measures
With dengue cases on the rise, here's all you need to know about the spread and prevention measures of the disease.

The number of dengue cases, caused by viruses transmitted by mosquitoes, have been on the rise, as the monsoon season is underway. Here are some important facts about dengue and a few preventive measures you need to be aware of.

Facts about the Aedes mosquitoes

The Dengue virus is primarily transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes. These mosquitoes do not lay eggs in drains, ditches, canals, wetlands, rivers or lakes. “What most people do not realise is that the dengue mosquito breeds in fresh clean water as opposed to dirty drains. Thus, people living in clean urban surroundings are more at risk of acquiring the disease,” says Dr KK Aggarwal, President HCFI & Honorary Secretary General IMA and a Padma Shri Awardee.

These mosquitoes can fly several hundred yards looking for water-filled containers, often found in a house and patio, to lay their eggs and it only takes a few mosquitoes in a household to produce a large dengue outbreak.

Humans are only bitten by the female mosquitoes who lay dozens of eggs, up to five times, during their life time. The eggs which can survive for months, hatch when submerged in water. The lifecycle of the mosquito is close to eight days - from egg to larvae, pupae and into an adult mosquito.

Tips to prevent dengue fever:
Do not let water accumulate in your house
Wear full-sleeve clothing
Use mosquito repellents, especially during the monsoon season
Since dengue is caused by a virus, it is the symptoms that are treated and the chronic phase of the illness with fever and myalgias lasts approximately one to two weeks.

The symptoms:
Severe joint and muscle pain
Swollen lymph nodes
Headache
Fever
Exhaustion - Rashes
While the risk of complications is in less than 1% of dengue cases, Dr Aggarwal has a few recommendations. The danger of dengue lies in dehydration, so it is vital to consume a lot of fluids and to only opt for a platelet transfusion if there is active bleeding or your platelet count is below 10,000.

Sexual orientation cannot be change and as this is not a disorder, so do not worry about its treatment. But it is commonly associated with anxiety, depression, adjustment disorder, self harm and isolation because of social complication as you must have been facing. As it is not a disorder according to medical science, no treatment available to change orientation. So stop accepting it as an illness and accept yourself as you are naturally. Also be aware of sexually transmitted disease and AIDS as it is very common with homosexuality because of unprotected relations. Final message to you: Do not worry about god given orientation, work on acceptance of your natural sexual orientation and counseling from psychologist in much distress. I hope this information has been both informative and helpful for you. Wish you good health.

Precautions and daily care for diabetes type 2.which kind of medicines works well.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology

Precautions and daily care for diabetes type 2.which kind of medicines works well.
Hello, If one has diabetes then most important is to start appropriate treatment with either oral anti-diabetics or Insulin depending upon the severity of hyperglycemia, plus strict dietary control and regular exercise for at least 1 hour a day. Other precautions are- avoid sweets, deep fried foods, junk foods, pastries, other bakery items, sweetened aerated drinks (colas) and refrain from alcohol and smoking. Dietary intake should match the daily needs based on ideal body weight, extent of exercise and blood glucose levels. As regards medicines there are a large number of them, but the choice depends on the specific needs of a patient. Unless all the details are made known - like fasting, PP glucose levels, HbA1c%, height, weight, extent of daily exercise and dietary pattern, there is no way to recommend any medication. Plus in this communication we are supposed to give only general suggestions/guidelines, but no prescriptions. For that one has to come in a private conversation. Thanks.

Some infants are born with accessory electrical tissue in the heart that causes episodes of rapid heart rate. A normal heart rate for infants is less than 150 beats per minute. The new york times health guide states that wolff-parkinson-white syndrome is one of the most common causes of tachycardia in babies and children. Normally, electrical impulses in the heart are produced, conducted and regulated by a finite amount of specialized cells and tissues. In wolff-parkinson-white syndrome, there are extra cells and an accessory pathway, causing additional heartbeats that may nearly double the normal heart rate. Depending on the severity of the condition, episodes of tachycardia may be few or frequent. Diagnosis may be delayed if tachycardia does not occur during testing. An ecg may show an abnormality called a delta wave. Treatment options include medications or a procedure known as catheter ablation, which destroys the extra impulse-producing cells with radiofrequency.

Worrying about anything will not solve. You alredy have done the right thing to do all the important tests and as they are normal now the only thing to do is to follow a healthy life style. One thing you can do is take a multivitamin and multimineral tablet. You can also consult for homoeopathic medicine which has a very good effect both physically and psychologically.

Curd Vs. Milk - How should you get your daily dose of calcium?

Curd Vs. Milk - How should you get your daily dose of calcium?

Curd vs. Milk- how should you get your daily dose of calcium?

Calcium is an essential mineral that is required by the body for various functions. It is used for building and maintaining strong bones and teeth. It is also used in the cardiovascular and nervous systems for preventing all kinds of health conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, lyme disease, etc.

It is, thus, extremely necessary to have calcium-rich foods as a part of your daily diet. Dairy products constitute as the primary source of calcium on an everyday basis. Of these, milk and curd are the two most important. But in case, you're wondering which one of the two is better for you, read on to find out.

Calcium content

There has been much debate about which is the better source of calcium - milk or curd. In very simple terms, milk ranks higher than curd in terms of calcium content. 100g of milk contains around 125mg of calcium, whereas 100g of curd has a lower calcium content of approximately 85mg. So if you really want to up your calcium intake, milk will be a better choice.

Other health benefits

If one is to take into consideration other health benefits provided by these two food products, curd takes the lead by a landslide.

Following are the known benefits of curd:

- It is far easier to digest

- It is a suitable dairy product for those who are lactose intolerant

- It cleanses the digestive tract

- It prevents infections of the stomach and intestines

In the end, it's for you to decide what your body needs more. If it requires more calcium, choosing milk would be wise; but if you cannot digest milk, opting for curd will ensure you get a healthy dose of calcium along with scores of other health benefits.

Ayurvedic Treatment For Autoimmune Disorders!

Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS)

Ayurvedic Treatment For Autoimmune Disorders!

When the immune system of the body reacts against the tissues of its own body, it is called an autoimmune disorder. To put it more dramatically, the body becomes its own enemy. The immune system of your body keeps fighting disease causing germs and bacteria, but in rare cases, the immune system might malfunction and fight its own body causing different disorders. These disorders may be caused due to genetic issues or due to mutations. According to ayurveda, autoimmune disorders are a result of constant unhealthy lifestyle and diet. Ayurveda works at the root cause of the disease where it starts treating the malfunctioning immune system.

Here is how ayurveda treats autoimmune disorders:

  1. Toxin removal: Ayurveda starts working on removing the toxins from the body. According to ayurveda, toxins or ama in the body interfere with the proper functioning of the immune system, which often leads to autoimmune diseases. Usually shunthi, haritaki, pippali, maricha, hingu and saindhav lavan are used to detoxify the body.
  2. Metabolism correction: Not only will ayurveda detoxify the body, but it will also correct the metabolism which gets messed up when afflicted with an autoimmune disorder. Neem, guggulu, guduchi, vasa, patola patra and ghrita are used to correct the metabolism.
  3. Increase in ojus production: Ojus is the component which helps in the nourishment of the immune system. It is generally received from the food you eat. Due to dysfunctional immune system causing the impairment of metabolism, production of ojas decreases to almost nil. Hence ayurveda increases its production. Guduchi, haridra, manjishtha, amalaki, nirgundi, yashtimadhu and pippali are used to increase ojha production.
  4. Immune system correction: Lastly, ayurveda works at correcting the immune system. If the immune system is not corrected, then the above treatment procedure will just be useless. Ghrita, haritaki, bahera, amalaki, ela and dadim are used generally to calm the immune system and rejuvenate it. They help correct the immune system for normal functioning.

Autoimmune disorders may not be easily treated, but that doesn't mean you cannot expect it to cure or witness a miracle. You just need some faith and confidence alongside proper treatment and you are ready to roll. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an Ayurveda.
