Hi lybrate-user here are some tips for how to handle your back pain: -stop normal physical activity for the first few days. This will help relieve your symptoms and reduce any swelling in the area of the pain. -apply heat or ice to the painful area. One good method is to use ice for the first 48 to 72 hours, and then use heat. Take pain relievers medicine. --while sleeping, try lying in a curled-up, fetal position with a pillow between your legs. If you usually sleep on your back, place a pillow or rolled towel under your knees to relieve pressure. -do not perform activities that involve heavy lifting or twisting of your back for the first 6 weeks after the pain begins. -avoid bending forward and sitting in a place for long time -stretching and strengthening exercises are important. But, starting these exercises too soon after an injury can make your pain worse. -some physiotherapy treatment like ift current can give you some relief. -a physical therapist can tell you when to begin stretching and strengthening exercises and how to do them. Take care.

Dear Doctor, My mother is 76 years old. She is usually very agile, workaholic from the time I had seen her. She takes care of cooking & other household work till now. Her daily routine is: Gets up at 4.30 am in the morning, goes out for walking by 5.00 am. Walks between 30 - 40 minutes. Comes back - does meditation for 20 min; then does Yoga for 30 minutes. By the time she finishes all this it will be around 6.30 am. Then she goes to Kitchen and does breakfast and lunch for my wife and children - as they get ready to go to their work. Goes back to bed around 11.00 pm. Till she retires to bed, she is almost doing some work in the house. Maybe takes 1 hr rest in the noon time. Coming to her health issue: She has been diagnosed for diabetes for the past 4 years and is taking Glycomet GP1 - one tab in the morning and one at night; Her sugar reading taken a couple of days back reads: Fasting: 189 and PP 196. Her food habits: Breakfast: 3 idli or 2 chapattis or 2 doses. Lunch: Rice with some dal and vegetables and 1 green; Dinner: 2 chapattis; Upuma or Kichadi. Eats a piece of apple and guava and some dry fruits and nuts. Has one glass of milk before going to bed. For the past 6 months she is finding it difficult to walk outside, as her legs are paining. Pain radiates from bottom part of hip till the heels of her both legs. Usually she walks faster than men. Now she is feels her legs are heavy and knees paining as she walks. End of her walk back home, she is sweating and panting for breath; Her question is: She does everything that is recommended and advised by Doctors. Still why would she be having such a problem at her age? What investigations are to be done? Which specialist doctor has she to check about her health issue? Would appreciate your thoughts and advise to my dear mother.

It's not common to all women. Your weight is your enemy. Those who have BMI above 2.5 suffer from many problems. One of them is knee pain.

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. As a general rule, first step is to rule out a bony injury and for that x ray of the affected shoulder is required. If there is no bony injury, I would advise to start with conservative management in form of ice packs, gentle anti inflammatory medication, arm sling and local analgesic spray for application for 5-7 days. If your pain, swelling and other associated symptoms do not subside after 5-7 days time, then we need to evaluate you and look for what soft tissue injury is there exactly? do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance. You can also discuss your case and treatment plans with me in a greater detail in a private consultation.

Namaste. As a Neurologist, the one question in your statement, which I can answer, is the numbness you feel in right upper thigh. It is called Meralgia Paresthetica. Not to worry about it. It's caused because a superficial nerve in your skin gets affected-- usually by sudden weight gain or loss, as in pregnancy, and sometimes by clothing which is tightly fitted at the waist. Usually heals by itself over weeks and months-- don't wear tight clothing at the waist. Medications maybe used of the symptoms are bothersome. Best,

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. You have mentioned back pain since 2 weeks only and you are also very young. Can you tell me whether you have only localized back pain, or is there any radiating pain in the legs as well, any other symptoms like numbness, weakness, paresthesias etc also there? what was the cause of onset of your pain? if you have localized back pain with no other symptoms like radiating leg pain, neurological symptoms like numbness, weakness, paresthesias etc, then you can start with following recommendations for initial period of 2-3 weeks: - to maintain proper posture of your back while working and sleeping - if pain is more then you can take a short course of an anti-inflammatory medications which suits you, please also add a muscle relaxant for 5-7 days - physical therapy initially under supervision of a trained physiotherapist and then to continue at home, initial focus only on pain relief, and strengthening exercises can be initiated once pain relief has occurred - adequate calcium & vitamin d intake if levels are low in body - ice packs can applied if your pain is acute, then hot fomentation can be done at home - analgesic spray for local application can be used and is easily available. - avoid lifting heavyweight/ acute forward bending in mornings etc we will observe you for next 2-3 weeks how you respond to this conservative management protocol.

Hello sir, I have a problem with my leg, my legs are paining at daily night when I am going to sleep. Please give me ...
Although you have provided a limited information regarding your leg pain in your age but I will try to figure out few important reasons for leg pains ------------------------- 2. Muscular cramps due to many reasons and the major one is dehydration due to drinking less water during the day-------- 3. Leg bone pains due to exhaustion due to vitamin-d deficiency----- 4. Legs pain can also be due to general weakness or any medical condition that you are suffering from------------------------- so, simply by asking for leg pain will not solve your problem but it can be solved by identifying the exact reason and working accordingly--------- although I will prescribe you few homoeopathic medicines which will help you relieving your pains but again, a history of your complaints will solve your problem permanently---------------------- homoeopathic medicine--------------------------- rhus tox 30 (dr reckeweg) drink 5 drops direct on tongue 3 times daily.-------------- magnesia-phos 6x (sbl) chew 4 tab every 2-3 hrly depending upon intenssity of pains---------------- vitamin-d plus (bakson) chew 1 tab daily---------------- drink 2 glass milk daily--------------- go for blood vitamin-d test---------------------
