I feel hungry and thirsty most of the time. My parents have diabetes. Are these early signs of diabetes?

I feel hungry and thirsty most of the time. My parents have diabetes. Are these early signs of diabetes?
Mr. Lybrate-user, feeling hungry and thirsty could be symptoms of diabetes. So it is better for you to get a blood check up done of both fasting and pp sugar levels, that can clarify your doubt. If fasting is >126 mg and pp >200 mg then diabetes is confirmed. If fasting is between 101 to 125 mg it is impaired fasting glucose and pp above 141 to 199 is impaired glucose tolerance (igt). Both these conditions are also referred as prediabetic state. At that stage t2 dm is still preventable.

For diabetes follow a diet low in carbohydrate, low in salt, low in fat and high in fibre. Avoid bakery products. Avoid too much rice and potato. Avoid fried stuff. Avoid chocolate, cakes, ice cream, soft drinks and fruit juices. Eat lots of vegetables. Walk for at least 30 minutes a day for 5 days in a week. Even after following a good diet and exercise, your blood sugar is out of control, then you will require medicine to control your blood sugar.

Hello, Thanks for the query. In the first month of pregnancy the mentioned sugar levels are high. This needs to be controlled, as ideal blood glucose level recommended during pregnancy is between 90 to 120 mg through out he day. Please get a Oral Glucose Tolerance Test done with 100 g glucose immediately and look at the results. Following table tells the details :Abnormal blood values for a 3-hour 100-gram oral glucose tolerance test are: Fasting: greater than 95 mg/dL (5.3 mmol/L) 1 hour: greater than 180 mg/dL (10.0 mmol/L) 2 hour: greater than 155 mg/dL (8.6 mmol/L) 3 hour: greater than 140 mg/dL (7.8 mmol/L) If results are in this pattern then treatment is required, that too with Insulin injection. This test is essential to correctly detect if there is problem is existing and if there is a need to start the treatment. Do not delay. After the test if you wish do come back with results, then I will be able to guide. But it will be good if you come in a private conversation as then only a prescription can be given. Thanks.

IS IT A MYTH OR REALITY THAT IN DIABETES THERE IS AN ERECTION problem.
HOW TO OVER COME IT.
Hello- Its a fact not a myth. Healthy body metabolism can produce a healthy sexual system. Diabetes is a metabolic disorder and is always associated with sex problems like early ejaculation, erectile dysfunction or loss of interest in sex. Normal sex medicines will not be beneficial in a diabetic person. You need to start specialized Vajikarana treatment of ayurveda which contains aphrodisiacs specially made of the diabetic patients.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology

Sanskarji, If your mother is taking Thyronorm tablet then she is having hypothyroidism. In this condition following things need to be avoided - Soy beans, soy containing products, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, radish, mustard, peanuts and coffee, as these are affecting thyroxine action. She can consume other vegetables than those mentioned above. She should consume good deal of salads and fruits, Use whole grain flour for chapati and roti. Can take milk and milk products with low fat.

Vyashnaviji, if a lady has diabetes then chances of getting vaginal candidiasis are very high, the reason is high blood glucose leads to excretion of glucose in urine and that promotes vaginal fungal infection (caused by candida albicans) leading to white discharge.

Mr Pravin, If she has hypothyroidism, then treatment with thyroxine tablets should be started. Dose of the table will depend on body weight and TSH levels. Plus she should avoid soy beans and soy containing products, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, radish, mustard, peanuts and coffee. Daily 1 hours exercise is also equally important to maintain normal weight.
