I am having gene problem of tooth. My father and mother also have. I am facing cavity problem. What should I do?

MDS
Dentist, Lucknow
Hi, facing cavity issues with or without pain is not uncommon but labeling it to be genetic is quite premature unless genetic mapping of the disease has been done. It most often depends on the oral hygiene than genes. And if the tooth structure is genetically weak then there are ways to strengthen it or reinforce it. Cavities can always be restored unless and until u have lost whole of tooth crown by it. Kindly get your dental rehabilitation done as soon as possible. Thanks n healing regards

Thanks for your query. The soreness over the gums and your mouth can be because of the aphthous stomatitis or lichen planus. Consult an oral physician and get it evaluated. Once the diagnosis is confirmed we can treat accordingly with topical anesthetics like lignocaine and topical steroids like triamcinolone acetoide. Do saline gargling. I hope I have answered your query. If you have any queries reply me back. Take care.

Hi lybrate-user, you seem to be having symptoms of temporomandibular joint disease. It is a condition in which the Jaw angle loose and thus makes these kind of noises. It is important that you visit an oral maxillofacial specialist and get yourself treated. As for the breathing problem and back pain, it can be solved provided a detailed history is taken and you are properly evaluated. For more assistance feel free to contact me.

Whiten your teeth, lubricate your gums and get the flossing done by conducting one easy and simple folk remedy known as oil pulling. Get that extra shine on your teeth by sloshing your mouth with coconut, sesame or sunflower oil for 15 minutes and then spitting it out.

MDS, BDS

Sir I have a dental problem that one of my front tooth is broken before five months what can I do for correcting it.
Hi lybrate-user. Firstly, you may need to take a radiograph to ascertain there is no fracture extending to the root. From your explanation, I am assuming you do not have any pain or discomfort associated with the tooth. That being the case, you may consult an endodontist of a cosmetic dentist to resolve your problem. It may require a crown of porcelain veneer or bonding with composite material, with or without root canal therapy. Wish you the best.

Hello. Tooth sensitivity — also known as dentin hypersensitivity — affects the tooth or exposed root surfaces. This occurs when the enamel that protects our teeth gets thinner, or when gum recession occurs, exposing the underlying surface, the dentin, thus, reducing the protection the enamel and gums provide to the tooth and root. If hot, cold, sweet or very acidic foods and drinks, or breathing in cold air, makes your teeth or a tooth sensitive or painful then you may have sensitive teeth. Tooth sensitivity can come and go over time. Causes: There are many causes of tooth sensitivity, including: Worn tooth enamel from using a hard toothbrush or brushing too aggressively Tooth erosion due to highly acidic foods and beverages Tooth erosion due to bulimia or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) Gum recession that leaves your root surface exposed There are several conditions which can cause pain, but which are not tooth sensitivity: Dental caries A cracked or chipped tooth Grinding or clenching the teeth Leakage around restorations External tooth bleaching Management: Proper oral hygiene is the key to preventing gums from receding and causing sensitive-tooth pain. If you brush your teeth incorrectly, or over-brush, your gums may become sensitive. Brushing properly twice daily for 2 minutes with toothpaste that does not have high levels of abrasives, and flossing once a day, can help reduce the chance of tooth sensitivity. A diet low in acidic foods (tomatoes, pickles, tea, citrus fruits) and drinks also helps prevent tooth sensitivity. Treatment: Apply Plantago Q/ few drops on cotton swab, place it on the affected teeth and press it tightly, do it thrice a day. Orally, take Mag. Phos. 6x and Merc. Sol. 30 - both 3 times a day daily for a month. Do visit a dentist for proper diagnosis, share the reports with me. In case possible, will help you in treating your problem.

Bad Breath - How Ayurveda Can Help You Treat it?

Bad Breath - How Ayurveda Can Help You Treat it?

Bad breath, also known as halitosis medically, is a much bigger problem than just being a cause for social embarrassment. It could be a symptom of an underlying disorder in your body which when corrected, will result in bad breath being resolved as well. However, in most cases, halitosis or bad breath occurs due to gum and teeth problems or due to life style habits such as a bad diet. Ayurveda has cure for both the problems and offers specialized treatment as well as home remedies.

Some general tips to fight bad breath
Bad breath may occur due to a combination of bad diet or digestive problems as well as oral hygiene issues. Some of the common things to follow, which will reduce your bad breath, especially concerning oral hygiene, are mentioned below
1. Rinse your mouth thoroughly after every meal as it helps clean food particles which may contribute to bad breath
2. Keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Dryness of the mouth can often cause bad breath
3. Brush your teeth, preferably at least twice daily and clean your tongue every time you brush your teeth
4. Avoid alcohol, smoking and excessive consumption of caffeine products
5. Use natural breath fresheners such as mint leaves and parsley
6. Don’t use breath mints, mouth fresheners or mouthwashes which have alcohol in them as they may further dry up your mouth, causing bad breath
7. Try and include more of fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet as these will keep you hydrated and supply you with the necessary nutrients to keep your digestive system functional and thus reduce bad breath.

Ayurveda for bad breath
Some of the home remedies as well as specialized Ayurvedic medications that can effectively combat bad breath are mentioned below. However, if you have a persistent problem, it is best to consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner who can help you with tailor made combinations specifically suited to your problem.

  1. Fenugreek or ‘methi’ and tea leaves: Methi is known to have many medicinal properties in Ayurveda. Boil methi leaves into a cup of tea and drink it once a day to see quick and lasting results.
  2. Cardamom seeds: This is a quick and effective remedy for bad breath, especially for social occasions. Chew on a few cardamom seeds after a smelly meal and it can definitely take care of your bad breath temporarily.
  3. Honey ginger and lemon combo: If your body has more ‘Kapha’ based symptoms, then this is a very good remedy. Mix equal amounts of honey with ginger juice and lemon juice and use that concoction to slowly gargle your mouth and then rinse.
  4. Some specialized medications: Certain special medications may be prescribed by your Ayurveda practitioner such as:
    • Kushtha, Nagarmotha, Cardamom, and licorice mixtures
    • Dashan Sanskar Churna which is a specially formulated charcoal powder meant for brushing
    • Special mixtures made from ingredients such as Manjishtha, Clove, Khadir, Cardamom, Betel nut, Black Pepper, Mayaphal, Kulinjan, Cumin seeds, Vidang, Bakul, and Camphor among others; either in the form of edible medication or in the form of mouthwashes.

Bad Breathe causes and its remedies

Bad Breathe causes and its remedies

Bad breath, also known as halitosis, is embarrassing and can take a toll on your confidence level. Bad breath can be due to a number of reasons such as eating odorous foods, smoking, dry mouth, medical conditions, gum disease, and sinus conditions.
However, the primary cause of bad breath is the bacteria that build up on the back of your tongue or between your teeth.
Maintaining good oral health is essential to controlling bad breath. This includes regular tooth brushing, flossing and tongue scraping.
Drinking adequate amount of water throughout the day is also essential for keeping your breath fresh. Plus, after eating a meal, swish water around your mouth for a few seconds. This will loosen food particles stuck between your teeth and clean your mouth.

Remedies

1. Fennel
Fennel acts as an excellent mouth freshener that helps control bad breath. It also contains antimicrobial properties that fight the bacteria in the mouth.
Slowly chew a tablespoon of fennel to freshen your breath and stimulate the production of saliva.
Drink fennel tea a couple of times a day. To make this tea, steep one or two teaspoons of fennel seeds in a cup of hot water for 5 to 10 minutes.

2. Cinnamon
Cinnamon contains cinnamic aldehyde, an essential oil that not only covers up bad breath, but also reduces the amount of bacteria in your mouth. To treat bad breath follow this remedy twice daily.
Boil one teaspoon of cinnamon powder in a cup of water, add some bay leaves and cardamom too.
Strain the solution and use it as a mouth rinse to refresh your breath.

3. Fenugreek
Fenugreek tea is highly effective when bad breath is caused by catarrhal infections
Boil a teaspoon of fenugreek seeds in a cup of water.
Strain and drink this tea once daily until you get rid of the problem.

4. Cloves
Cloves help freshen your breath and also have antibacterial properties that are very helpful in getting rid of bad breath.
The easiest method is to pop a few pieces of cloves into your mouth and chew them thoroughly. This will eliminate bad breath in a few minutes.
Make clove tea. Boil a cup of water, add one teaspoon of ground cloves and allow it to simmer for 5 to 10 minutes. Drink the tea or use it as a mouthwash twice a day.

5. Parsley
Parsley contains chlorophyll that can help neutralize bad breath.
Chew on a fresh parsley sprig to refresh your breath. You can also dip this herb in vinegar and then chew it thoroughly.
Another option is to put parsley leaves through a juicer and sip the juice anytime you need to refresh your breath. It will also aid digestion.

6. Lemon juice
Curing bad breath with a lemon rinse has been used for generations. The acidic content in lemons prevents the growth of bacteria in your mouth. Plus, its strong pleasant smell helps mask the bad odour.
Just stir one tablespoon of lemon juice into a cup of water and rinse your mouth with it. You can also add a bit of salt to it and then use it. This remedy will help to solve the problem of dry mouth which is one of the main reasons that contribute to bad breath.

7. Apple cider vinegar
Due to its ph balancing effects, apple cider vinegar makes a wonderful remedy for bad breath. You can try any of these remedies depending on your preference.
Stir one tablespoon of raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar into a glass of water and drink it before eating your meals. The vinegar will help in digestion as well as cure bad breath.
Gargle with apple cider vinegar mixed in a cup of water.

8. Baking soda
Baking soda, also known as bicarbonate of soda, is another great solution for getting rid of and preventing bad breath. It helps balance the levels of acid that contribute to bad breath. Plus, it fights oral bacteria that cause bad breath.
Mix one-half teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of warm water and use it as a mouth rinse once daily until you are satisfied with the results.
Brushing your teeth with baking soda will also help reduce the acidity in your mouth and prevent bacteria from building up on your tongue.

9. Tea tree oil
Tea tree oil has antiseptic properties that act like a powerful disinfectant for your mouth. Can get the benefits from tea tree oil in a variety of ways.
Brush your teeth with a toothpaste containing tea tree oil.
Another option is to put a few drops of tea tree oil on your toothbrush along with your regular toothpaste.
You can also mix a few drops of tea tree oil, peppermint oil and lemon oil in a glass of water and use it as a mouthwash.

10. Tea
Normal as well as herbal teas can also help combat bad breath. The antioxidant polyphenols present in both green and black tea can stop the growth of bacteria responsible for bad breath.
Make this tea, steep one teaspoon of dried sage in a cup of hot water for five minutes. Strain and drink this tea several times a day to keep your breath fresh.
If your bad breath persists even after trying these natural treatments, consult a doctor or dentist to see if there is a more serious underlying problem.

Tips to prevent bad breath

A. If you wear dentures, remove them at night and clean to get rid of bacterial buildup from food and drink.

B. Drink plenty of water and swish cool water around in your mouth. This is especially helpful to freshen 'morning breath.'
Brush after every meal and floss, preferably twice a day.

C. Replace your toothbrush every two to three months.

D. Arrange regular dental check-ups and cleansing.

E. Scrape your tongue each morning with a tongue scraper or spoon to decrease the bacteria, fungi, and dead cells that can cause odour. Hold the tip of the tongue with gauze to pull it forward in order to clean the back of the tongue.

F. Chew a handful of cloves, fennel seeds, or aniseeds. Their antiseptic qualities help fight halitosis-causing bacteria.

G. Chew a piece of lemon or orange rind for a mouth- freshening burst of flavor. (wash the rind thoroughly first.) the citric acid will stimulate the salivary glands and fight bad breath.

H. Chew a fresh sprig of parsley, basil, mint, or cilantro. The chlorophyll in these green plants neutralizes odours.

I. Try a 30-second mouthwash rinse that is alcohol-free (unlike many off-the-shelf products). Mix a cup of water with a teaspoon of baking soda (which changes the ph level and fights odour in the mouth) and a few drops of antimicrobial peppermint essential oil. Don't swallow it! (yields several rinses.)

My teeth cap got out all of sudden. I want to refix them. Please reply with the price for doing this.
Dear lybrate-user, if the cap has been placed in the last 1 year, you can readily go to the dentist who placed it and get it fixed for free. However, if it has been more than a year, your dentist may charge you, depending upon his own discretion. Although this is usually the standard policy, many dentists may follow their own rules for charging patients in such cases, so it really depends on your dentist.
