Hello. Normal range for serum valproic acid is 50 to 100 ug/ml. In some case levels upto 125 can be taken as normal. The important point is about clinical side effects. If you have any despite normal blood levels, then dose need to be decreased accordingly. Thanks.

What is the role of CBT on Obsessive compulsive Disorder and how long does it take for the patient to return back to normalcy.

Masters in Philosophy
Psychologist, Chennai
Hi lybrate-user. Exposure and response prevention (ERP) therapy is usually given for OCD patients by a clinical psychologist and it's also part of CBT. It generally takes 8-10 sessions.

My wife is suffering from clinical depression and she is consulting a psychiatrist from last 12 yrs. She is taking a lot of medicines please advise if she can get out of this medicine cycle.

My wife is suffering from clinical depression and she is consulting a psychiatrist from last 12 yrs. She is taking a ...
She can but not by relying only on the effects of medication: she needs help from a counselor too. There she will learn skills, tools, and techniques to help cope with her condition. If she remains without breakdowns for three years, she can be weaned off of the medication but only with consultation of the doctor. In the meantime please let her do the following sincerely because she could resolve the problem better with good cooperation: "Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber, nuts, avocado, exercise regularly, eat dark chocolate, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. I suggest you do the opposite of what this depression makes you feel like doing (actually, not doing): you will need to fight this condition. You must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, attend Yoga classes etc. Watch sitcoms on TV or comedies and cheer yourself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose yourself to some sunlight every day, at least, 30 minutes but not in the scorching heat. Whatever happens, please incorporate these three important adaptations in your life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If you did these three, lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in God to alleviate your sufferings. Don’t wait for others to help. Use your own motivation, which might be at its lowest, but persevere and win this battle. Above all to be really happy, you need to live in love and for love. Learn all about emotions and how to handle them and that will get you out of the depression rather easily and quickly. A counselor is there only to facilitate you, all the hard word must come from you, and your cooperation with that person is very critical for your success. Be positive every day and learn to be contented with what you have. Do some left brain exercises: it is the happy brain. Here are a few suggestions: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. Whatever happens please cooperate with the therapy and do not discontinue until the condition is completely resolved.

Is Bipolar Mood disorder Hampering Your Relationship?

MD - Psychiatry
Sexologist, Sri Ganganagar
Is Bipolar Mood disorder Hampering Your Relationship?

Bipolar mood disorder, otherwise called manic depressive disorder or manic depression, is a genuine and serious mental problem. It is a disorder that can lead to unsafe conduct, damaged relations and career, and even self-destructive inclinations if it is not treated properly and on time.

Bipolar disorder is portrayed by outrageous changes in the state of mind, from mania to depression. Between these mood swings, a man with bipolar disorder may encounter normal moods as well. Here is how it can affect a relationship:

  • Bipolar disorder can turn into an issue from the very begin of a relationship. Exploring any sentimental relationship - whether it is dating or marriage - can be a risky attempt. Including bipolar disorder with its crazy ride of feelings in with the general problems in a relationship, and connections can turn out to be all the more difficult.
  • However, not everybody with bipolar disorder encounters the state of mood swings of depression and mania, but when those scenes do happen, they can destroy a relationship.
  • During the hyper stage, a person can lose his or her feeling of judgment. That implies spending all their money carelessly, breaking rules, and taking part in dangerous practices like medication and liquor abuse. When you have a partner with the bipolar issue who gets into a hyper stage, it can be extremely harmful to a great degree for the relationship since they might do things that hurt you or may trouble you financially.
  • Any number of things, from work problems to financial issues, can lead to fights and put a strain on a marriage. However, if one of the partners has a bipolar disorder, simple stressors can trigger their mood swings. That might be the reason why around ninety percent of the relations and marriages with a bipolar partner, fail.
  • Having a relationship when you live with bipolar disorder is troublesome. Nevertheless, it can surely be dealt with. It takes the efforts of both the partners to make it work.

The initial step is to get diagnosed and treated for your condition. Your specialist can give you hormone balancing drugs, for example, Lithium, with antidepressants to control your symptoms. Treatment with a clinician or psychologist is additionally vital. With treatment, you can figure out how to control the practices that are putting pressure on your relationship.

Here are a couple of different approaches to alleviate a portion of the weight on your relationship:

  1. Take your medicine as recommended
  2. Take a marriage education and counselling class
  3. Manage your stress in different ways whether it is writing in a diary, taking long strolls, or listening to music
  4. Attempt to adjust work with more calming exercises
  5. Adhere to a customary rest cycle
  6. Eat healthy and exercise frequently
  7. Maintain distance from liquor and caffeine
