Allergies - Causes, Symptoms And Treatments For Them!

Allergies are a reaction of your immune system to any foreign matter, such as pet dander, pollen or bee venom, and not everyone is affected in the same way.

Antibodies are substances produced by your immune system to protect you from harmful invaders that can cause infections or make you ill.

The immune system produces antibodies when it comes into contact with allergens. Your immune system can recognise any allergen as threatening even if it’s not. As a result, your skin, airways, digestive system or sinus gets inflamed.

Allergies can vary greatly in severity—from mild irritations to anaphylaxis (a likely life-threatening emergency). Allergies are mostly incurable; however, there are various treatments available to alleviate allergy symptoms.

Causes-

Common triggers of allergy include:

  1. Airborne allergens, such as mould, dust mites, animal dander and pollen.

  2. Certain foods, especially milk, eggs, shellfish, fish, soy, wheat, tree nuts and peanuts.

  3. Insect bites, such as wasp stings or bee stings.

  4. Medications, specifically penicillin-based antibiotics or penicillin.

  5. Latex, or any allergen you touch, causes skin infections.

Symptoms-

Symptoms of allergy depend on its type.

Treatment-

Treatments of allergy include:

  1. Avoiding Allergens: Your doctor can help you take necessary steps to recognise and avoid the allergens that trigger allergies. This is usually the most relevant step in the prevention of allergic reactions and reduction of symptoms.

  2. Medicines to Lower Symptoms: Eye drops, nasal sprays or oral medications are commonly prescribed to reduce reactions and alleviate symptoms.

  3. Immunotherapy: If the allergy is severe or other treatments fail to relieve symptoms, allergen immunotherapy is recommended. In this treatment, you get injected by a number of clarified allergen extracts over the years.

  4. Emergency Epinephrine: If your allergy is severe, your doctor will provide you with an emergency epinephrine shot that you can carry with you everywhere.

What are the treatment options available for treating disorganised schizophrenia and how effective the treatment is.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician, Alappuzha
People with disorganized schizophrenia often use the same treatments as those with other types of schizophrenia: medication and counselling or therapy. The most common medication used to treat schizophrenia is an antipsychotic medication. There is no clear antipsychotic drug of choice for schizophrenia. Clozapine is the most effective medication but is not recommended as first-line therapy because it has a high burden of adverse effects, requires regular blood work, and has not outperformed other medications in first-episode patients.

I have allergic asthma and high eosinophil count. I have been taking montelukast lc for the past 5 years. Is it ok to continue taking this long term? I get severe cold if I stop taking the medicine for even a single day.

Hello lybrate-user, ideal course for you would be to get your allergy test done to identify the allergens responsible for your symptoms and then accordingly avoid them. Your allergologist will be able to guide you if immunotherapy can be of any help to you after studying your allergies. Avoidance and immunotherapy are the only measures which can help you get rid of the medication.

Sir/ma'am, my mother is suffering from schizophrenia from the past 2 years, she was under medication and for past 4 months she was absolutely fine without any medications. But in april again she started to hallucinate. She isn't agreeing to meet the doctor. I'm not able to understand what to do. The medicines she took was trapex and arpizol. Thank you.

Schizophrenia is quite a debilitating disease and you should not attempt to regulate or discontinue the medication on your own. If after three years of regular use and without any relapses, it is possible to wean your mom off of the medication but that also in tiny doses. This should be completely managed by your doctor. She should also go for counseling parallely. If she is not cooperative you can ask your doctor for doses/medicines that can be administered through her food without her knowledge.
