Gastroscopy helps locate and treat any cause of bleeding, ulcers, or tumors in the stomach. It is carried out by gastroenterology specialist. Gastroscopy is carried out in a fully equipped theater and is an outpatient procedure i.e. the patient doesn't have to stay the night at the hospital for the procedure. The best way to get an endoscopy done is on empty stomach. Patients are advised not to eat or drink, including water, anything at least 6 hours before the examination. Before the procedure, patient's throat is numbed with local anesthesia spray or if the patient wants a sedative may be given. If the patient chooses sedation, additional oxygen through the nostrils and a probe is placed on the finger to monitor the blood oxygen level and heart rate. Sedation reduces the awareness of what is happening while the patient is still awake. The patient will lie on their side and the gastroscopist will pass the endoscope through the mouth and into the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum. The endoscope does not interfere with the breathing. The procedure takes about 10 minutes but it may take longer if it is used to treat a condition. The entire procedure isn't painful but may feel uncomfortable or unpleasant at times. The result of the endoscopy generally takes 5 days. The doctor will look into the reports from the endoscopy and will prescribe the medication accordingly.
