Hello lybrate-user, Try to keep to a regular timing for going to bed. Avoid fried and heavy foods. Eat early and light food at night so that the food is almost digested by the time you go to bed. Prefer fruits and green vegetables. Fix daily work schedule and be busy with your work. Don’t keep pending problems in mind. Note down the points and leave them for next day’s action. Don’t do stimulating mental work or keep watching TV which can keep your mind agitated or active. This will not allow you to sleep. LCD screen will also have adverse effect. Day’s physical exercise makes you tired and induces sleep. A warm bath in the evening will also be helpful. Low volume music also induces sleep. Keep your bed room neat, dark and cool. You may cover your eyes with bed sheet. Drink plenty of water during the day rather than toward bedtime. Don’t have stimulating drinks like tea or coffee. Drinking a glass of milk before going to bed is fine. If head ache is severe take tab. Dolo 650mg with one glass of milk and sleep.

I have a diabetes. Pls suggest me what to eat or not give me advice to prevent from it.

I have a diabetes. Pls suggest me what to eat or not give me advice to prevent from it.
Mr. Lybrate-user, prevention of diabetes is possible when diabetes has not developed. Once it has been diagnosed, then it can only be controlled with appropriate treatment. So if you already have diabetes then take care and control sugar levels as normal as possible. To achieve good control fasting should be closer to 100 mg, pp 150 to 160 mg and hba1c%<6.8. Diet has to be every individual specific, depending upon blood sugar level, hba1c%, extent of daily exercise and weight of the patient. Your diet should provide exact calories based on the details mentioned above. In the mean time, avoid sweets completely, also direct sugar and gur, no deep fried foods, junk foods, pastries, sweetened aerated drinks, high fat milk products, sweet corn syrup containing products and highly processed food products. Consume more of green leafy vegetables, salads, permitted fruits (100 g a day). Use whole grain flour, for chapati and rot. Do not use refined flour like maida. Avoid alcohol and smoking, adapting this modified lifestyle will help in controlling blood sugar better.

Plan a healthy summer diet for your child:
As the temperatures begin to soar, it is quite likely that your child's energy is getting drained out completely.
As the temperatures begin to soar, it is quite likely that your child's energy is getting drained out completely.
Set a routine
So what if your child doesn't have school during this season? Make sure that he/she eats the meals on time. "If your kid is an early riser, have breakfast between eight and nine in the morning, eat lunch between one to two in the afternoon and complete dinner by nine, if you want to put your child to sleep early"
Make easy-to-digest meals
While your child might have the urge to reach out for a packet of chips, avoid preparing heavy, oily fare. After all, summer is a time when your kid is going to be out in the sun and eating a heavy meal before or after exhaustive physical exercise can lead to nausea. Instead, make simple home cooked meals like rice and dal along with cucumber salad, etc.

Get innovative with milk
While milk is the most essential source of calcium and must be included in your child's diet, forcing a glass of milk down his/her throat won't do you any good. "Give milk in form of lassi, buttermilk or opt for fruit milkshakes"

Choose fresh fare
During this season, food gets stale very fast. If your kid's academic year hasn't ended yet, avoid giving cut fruits and vegetables in tiffin boxes as bacterial growth accelerates in cut produce and may lead to gastric disturbances.

Stock up on summer fruits
According to nutrition expert Pallavi Patange, parents should stock up on lots of summer fruits, because eating them will help prevent kids from developing any vitamin and mineral deficiencies. "A slice of watermelon, berries, mango, oranges, lychee, etc keep kids hydrated through the summer" she adds. In order to ensure your kid is having enough water through the day, fill up a bottle of water containing glucose and ask your kid to carry it at all times.

Get creative with recipes
"Kids love it when food is presented to them in an interesting manner. Make aam panna and add fresh mint leaves to it" says Krishnan. Patange adds, "You should avoid giving your child any kind of drinks bought from stalls as you don't know where the water comes from" Instead, dish out delicious fruit popsicles at home.

With all be prepared to face the up coming summer.
Take care
Dr. RP

Does Heartburn Lead to Esophageal Cancer?

MCh HPB Surgery, Fellow, European Board of Surgery, MS - General Surgery, MBBS
Gastroenterologist, Guwahati
Does Heartburn Lead to Esophageal Cancer?

Heartburn or acid reflex is a burning sensation that is felt in the throat or chest region after the intake of certain foods. While many of us must have felt heartburn once in our lifetime, too many occurrences such as this could be a fair indication of esophageal cancer.

How an acidburn is related to esophagus?
Esophagus is the tube which carries food from the throat to the stomach. In the case of an acid reflux, the acid from the stomach jumps to the esophagus leading to a condition known as the Barrett’s esophagus. This is a condition which replaces the tissue present in the esophagus with a similar kind of tissue found in the lining of the intestine. This being said, Barrett’s esophagus doesn’t necessarily lead to esophageal cancer.

Key symptoms of Esophageal Cancer
Difficulty swallowing is a key symptom of esophageal cancer. This condition is known as dysphasia. As the tumor grows bigger, it becomes more difficult to swallow food. Esophageal pain is also a common symptom reported by many patients. Loss in appetite and an unexplained weight loss are some of the other symptoms of this type of cancer. Although esophageal cancer does not show any visible signs in the early stage, some of the key indicators are chronic couch, indigestion and hoarseness of voice.

Key risk factors:
Some of the key risk factors for this type of cancer are as follows:

  1. Men tend to run a higher risk of getting this cancer than women.
  2. Esophageal cancer are often detected in people above the age of 55 or more
  3. Chronic tobacco users have higher chances of getting esophageal cancer
  4. Consumption of alcohol increases the risk of esophageal cancer
  5. Obesity increases the risk of acid flux thereby, leading to esophageal cancer
  6. Radiation treatment in the abdomen or chest area might also lead to esophageal cancer

How an esophageal cancer is detected?
Primarily there are 3 ways by which this cancer is detected. The first step for an oncologist to detect this cancer is to perform an endoscopy. If this fails, doctors often try a barium swallow on suspected patients and take an X-ray to understand the esophagus lining. If all this fails, doctors rely on a CT scan to detect this cancer.

How is esophageal cancer treated?
If a patient is lucky and the cancer gets detected in a very early stage, the tumor along with the infected cell can be surgically removed. Apart from surgery, some other alternatives are radiation and chemotherapy. A combination of radiation and chemotherapy or a surgery followed by radiation can also be suggested by the doctor. The treatment plan depends on the stage of detection.
