I have diabetes and high blood pressure
I need precautions and food limits to keep it in control
Thank you.
You need to know the low and high glycaemic foods, that is foods that increase /delay the rise in blood sugars. For example white bread has a high gi (glycaemic index) as compared to whole wheat bread. Portion size of your diet will depend on your sugar level, body weight etc. For high bp, you need to cut down all your non veg, processed and bakery products. Certain natural foods are also high in sodium content that needs to be cut down by leeching it.

Pumpkin Extract Beneficial for Diabetic Patients

Pumpkin extract has insulin–like effects. It can help people with diabetes keep their blood sugar under control.

Quoting Chinese researchers that animals with drug–induced diabetes treated with pumpkin extract had lower blood glucose levels, greater insulin secretion, and more insulin–producing beta cells than diabetic rats that weren’t given the extract. This action may be due to the presence of both antioxidants and D–chiro–inositol, a molecule that mediates insulin activity.

Pumpkin extract is potentially a very good product for pre–diabetic persons, as well as those who have already developed diabetes.

Pumpkin is frequently used to treat diabetes and high blood glucose in Asia.

Dear Lybrate User, I have sympathy for your current situation but it seems that you are now behaving with so much attraction towards sweets because they are being denied constantly in your life. Its human tendency to get attracted towards the things which are disallowed to us. People who are not diabetics and for whom sugar is not an issue - they never behave with so attraction towards sweets. Try to master this psychology. Its important that you understand that your mind is playing games with you in this manner. You can have sweets- but don't overindulge and cause harm to your body. Rather you should set goals for yourself. Try to remind yourself that you will exercise daily more and more and then you can deserve that extra piece of sweet which is attracting you so much!

Only medicines will not help to control it, you should make some changes in your lifestyle like eating meals on time, exercising regularly and eating less refined carbohydrate like maida, pasta, bread, noodles, white rice. Have food rich in fibre like whole grains (wheat, brown rice) nuts, fruits and vegetables (avoid potato, sweet potato, arbi, beetroot) etc.

For a diabetic it is best advised to have a diet planned as per the sugar levels, lifestyle and history. Though you can follow some guidelines - have small frequent meals. Do not fast for long hours. Avoid a very heavy meal at one time. Avoid fruit juices, aerated drinks or sugarcane juice, honey, jaggery or sugar. Avoid junk foods. Eat local and seasonal foods. Fruits are fine as long as eaten in moderation as a midmeal. Exercise and stay active. Do not attempt to try out too many remedies as you could go into hypoglycaemia. Sleep well. It's all a matter of discipline.
