I am 64 years old. A diabetic for more than 10 yrs, but under control with medicines. Latest HBA1C is 6.3During the last two months, I feel pain in myright hand -between shoulder and knee- and also in the shoulder whenever I lift the hand or turn it. With muscle relaxant tablets and/or with ointment massage (moov or Himami) I get relief considerably. But the discomfort returns from time to time. Can you kindly advice on further course?

Dear Abhirupa, These symptoms may also happen when the blood is weak and there is lack of nutrition to all the different body parts. Depending on the CBC, she should take adequate vitamins, minerals (in natural or ayurvedic form) to strengthen blood and body. Regards.

The benefits of regular physical activity are: Lower blood glucose levels Better response to insulin Strengthened heart activity Improved blood circulation Lowered cholesterol Improved physical fitness Feeling better People of all ages should include a minimum of 30 minutes of physical activity of moderate intensity on most, if not all, days of the week. A regimen of physical activity must be planned judiciously when diabetes complications are present. How to get started Look for an activity that you enjoy. Make sure it's right for your current level of fitness. Walking may be a good way to get started. It is convenient and low in cost. All you need to get started are cotton socks and a pair of supportive shoes that fit well. What will a complete exercise plan look like Flexibility - stretch before you exercise. Resistance Training - this includes lifting light weights to build calorie-burning muscle mass. Aerobic activity - walking, dancing, swimming or biking to burn calories and reduce heart risk. How to keep going Make walking or your other exercise activities part of your daily routine. Finding someone to walk or exercise with can help make your workout more enjoyable. When exercise is enjoyable and social, it is its own reward. This may help you stay motivated. Know that everyone's exercise plans lapse occasionally. Instead of being discouraged, use this time as an opportunity of review your goals. Try to recommit as soon as possible to an enjoyable and healthy level of activity. Start slowly. Five or ten minutes a day is a good beginning if you have been very inactive. Wear comfortable, supportive shoes and cotton socks. Check your feet after exercise for any signs of poor fit or injury. Carry a diabetes identification card. Check your blood sugar before and after exercise. This is especially important for anyone who takes insulin, a sulfonylurea or a meglitinide. These medicines may create risk for low blood sugar. Carry something to eat that contains glucose. Use it to prevent or treat low blood sugar if needed. Stretch and warm up at the beginning of your activity. This helps prevent injuries. Drink more liquids that contain no calories, like water, when exercising. If you have leg or chest pains during exercise, stop exercising and call your doctor. Avoid exercising if your fasting blood sugar is above 300 mg/dL (16.7 mmol/L) or under 70 mg/dL (3.9 mmol/L).

Dear lybrate user, one of the major nutritional substance required for human body is carbohydrate. We take carbohydrate in the form of rice, wheat, sugar etc. The complex molecules of carbohydrate are broken down into simple glucose molecules during digestion & released in the blood stream to be absorbed by the muscle cells. Muscle cells utilise the glucose molecules to release energy by breaking down those glucose molecules. Insulin hormone plays a vital role in the absorption of the glucose molecules by the muscle cells. In abnormal conditions, either due to less production of insulin or due to resistance to insulin, the process of absorption of glucose by the muscles comes to a stand still. The glucose molecules remains in the bloodstream which results in the increase in the blood sugar level. The failure of utilisation of the glucose molecules by the muscle cells results in production of less energy than normal condition. This is externally manifested as the fatigue & tiredness of the patient. This excess amount of blood sugar compels the kidney to function more than normal level in order to excrete the blood sugar molecules through urine. As a result the patient suffers from frequent urination. This abnormal condition is clinically known as diabetes mellitus. Once a patient is diagnosed with diabetes he has to take regular medicine to keep his blood sugar level within normal limits. Take homoeopathic mother tincture gymnemna sylvestra q, 30 drops, thrice daily, after meals, in a cup of water. Also you need to walk at least 1 hour daily without any interval. Also you need to take a low carbohydrate rich diet. Avoid rice, sweet dishes, fruits, cold drinks, fast foods, alcoholic beverages, potato etc.

Hi I suggest you continue to check your blood sugars frequently with exercise and diet. Your 3 months average blood sugar will tell me how your blood sugars have been in the last 3 months. Less than 7% suggests dose reduction. But if it is around 6.5% and less than that and remains that way persistently with exercise and diet alone then we can stop the medicine. In this case You are probably into something called honeymoon phase of diabetes where in your blood sugars will be normal without medications but keep a watch as slowly they'll creep back.

I am diabetic patient and insulin dependent. Can I use tablets instead of injection?
Hello, please continue with insulin as doctor prescribed. If there is a possibility, doctor should have suggested the medicine instead. Its good to control your diabetes. But along with medication, you need to concentrate on food also. Make sure you food must have high protein, fiber and omega-3 nutrition. For a diabetics, its good to have more protein rather than carbohydrates, which converts into glucose and may have a chance to increase the diabetes. What we suggest is the nutrigemoic protein, who certified, with 9 essential amino acids. This will help you cure your diabetics in a year time. But you will definitely have a result, if you can use protein with vitamins and minerals, fiber and omega-3 supplements.
