Stress And Sleep - The Hidden Factors Behind Weight Gain!

Stress And Sleep - The Hidden Factors Behind Weight Gain!

If you are sticking to your diet chart and slogging hard at the gym, yet the body refuses to shed any weight, it is time to rethink about the whole schedule. A microscopic vision on diet and exercise may not always be the right way to go in the endeavor of losing weight. There are factors such as sleep deprivation and high amount of stress that could over-write other factors and play a crucial hand in increasing weight. Here is a brief idea on tackling issues like these:

Sleep is a crucial factor: If you are finding it difficult to avoid the mid-afternoon slump just after lunch and there is a craving for sweet at the same time, do not curse yourself. It is very natural. The combination of carbs and sleep deprivation can be a deadly combination. A Harvard study conducted in the year 2004 found that men of the average age of 22 with a normal Body Mass Index (BMI), suffering from sleep deprivation tend to face appetite and hunger issues. Another eye-opener from the same study was that the appetite of these lot is always directed to dense energy foods and high carbohydrate foods. The hunger often hits in the afternoon.

While this is a relatively new area of research, it is pretty evident that hormonal intervention is a key component of weight gain. Less than adequate sleep means a decrease in leptin and an increase in ghrelin hormone. The first hormone increases hunger and the second hormone increase appetite. Other studies conducted by the Stanford University and the University of Wisconsin found that people who had less than 7.7 hours of sleep have a higher body mass index compared to their counterparts. Simply put, if the body does not rest sufficiently, it draws its energy from food. This results in weight gain.

Stress is bad news: The late-night sleeping woes are largely blamed upon stress and rightly so. Stress can have a profound impact on the body. It changes the body hormone and invites several unwanted diseases. Cortisol is the hormone that helps an individual to manage stress by providing extra energy. As it turns out, people suffering a high amount of stress daily fails to utilize the high amount of energy that cortisol produces. The excess cortisol released through hormones such as the serotonin and insulin can slow down the metabolic function of the body, imbalance the blood sugar level, increases cravings and hunger. Extra cortisol can notch up the belly and the waist by a few inches resulting in cardiovascular diseases for many. New research has reported that people who can handle stress better, has a 60 percent lesser risk of cardiovascular diseases. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Dietitian/Nutritionist.

You just need to lose 4 to 5 kg of weight. Eliminate all sugar and sweet food from your diet and eat salad with lunch and dinner. This is best for refucing belly fat. If you are already doing this than a metabolic and hormonal assessment will help to decide what kind of detail diet plan has to be created for you.

It is best to lose weight by lifestyle changes than by taking supplements for long term perspective. If your height is little more than 5 feet than your eeight is ok. Just do some exercise or work outs. At your age that is the best approach.

Hi lybrate-user, it is your your hormones which have made you fat and keeping you fat. Unless we make correct diagnosis and and create a diet and lifestyle plan to correct that hormonal abnormalities you will not be able to lose weight for long term. Continue to avoid all junk food and all kind of sweet food. Low fat diet does not work for majority of people. Don't eat multiple times. Eat only 2 or 3 times a day. Eat wholesome nutritious food full of fibers, good quality fat like ghee and coconut etc. Don't focus on calories but on nutritional density and diversity. Simultaneously working on exercise and diet will surely help. Best rate to lose weight is 1/2 kg per week. If that happens, it is least likely to go high again in future. Trying to lose weight in very short time will need some form of crash diet. Even if you lose weight doing this kind of crash diet, you will get it all back within no time and all the gain will be mainly fat. Not good for your health. Running 10 km per day is wonderful. You are on right track. Do that at least 4 times per week. Be gentle and patient with yourself. Demonstrate commitment in your persistent efforts. Make comprehensive change in diet, exercise, sleep and stress in your routine. This is called lifestyle medicine. If you can not do it on your own, find some lifestyle medicine expert who can help you in this over extended period of time my best wishes to you.

Hello lybrate-user, based on your medical problems and weight gain in central part of your body, I suspect that your obesity is driven by hormones rather than excessive calorie consumption. Your diet style should be according to the root cause of obesity. Merely walking and eating low fat, low calorie food is therefore not very effective. Proper diagnosis and customised approach involving nutritional changes, graded exercise, meditation for stress management and sleep improvement is needed. This is called lifestyle medicine. Best wishes.

Recently I have realized that I am becoming more anxious about things, thinking too much about things and not feeling like doing social interactions at my new job which I joined in December last year. I sometimes feel I am not able to motivate myself to excel. I know what is to be done but do not have the motivation energy to achieve the goal. I do not like my present condition specially the dirty chaotic environment which India is providing. I dream of settling in a quite calm place like ooty or dharamshala. I am at 104 kgs weight but other checks are normal. Can my excess weight is strongly related to these feelings?

Hi lybrate-user, any exercise which makes you jump will not allow your planter fasciitis for sure. You need to take break for couple of months from bokwa. Most people have hormonal issue underlying their weight problem and simply doing exercise for 45-60 min per day is not very effective for weight loss. Deciding a diet plan as per your metabolic profile is most effective tool for sustainable weight loss without struggling with hunger or low energy. Avoid all junk food and all sweet food. Low fat diet does not work for majority of people. Eat wholesome nutritious food full of fibers, good quality fat like ghee and coconut etc. Don't focus on calories but on nutritional density and diversity.
