Digestive Health - 10 Worst Foods For It!

Digestive Health - 10 Worst Foods For It!

Taking a balanced diet not only helps in maintaining overall health but also helps in curing indigestion. The right mix of carbohydrate, protein, water, fat, vitamin, salt and fiber is important for the body to function well. Apart from maintaining a healthy diet, it is also essential to refrain ourselves from food that triggers indigestion.

Here is a list of worst foods for digestive health:

  1. Dairy Products: Dairy Products contain a protein called the casein. This protein can be highly allergic and inflammatory. Its strong insulin response can hold up fat and make someone look fatter than his usual self. Lactose, the carbohydrate found in milk is extremely difficult to digest. If you are lactose intolerant, you should make it a point to stay away from dairy products such as kefir and yogurt to ensure smooth digestion.
  2. Gluten: This protein molecule is found in barley and wheat. Gluten is extremely difficult to break and has the capability to create a lot of damage. The unbroken molecules of gluten cause inflammation and bloating. People, who have GI issues, should definitely eschew gluten to ensure food digestion.
  3. Sugar: Patients suffering from indigestion should stay away from sugar related products such as candy, cake and crackers. Intake of sugar increases the rate of inflammation, feeds harmful bacteria and suppresses the immune system.
  4. Fake fats: Fake fats are extremely difficult to digest and make the cell membranes more rigid. It can also show symptoms such as cramps, loose stools and bloating.
  5. Gums: Guar and xanthan gum are proved to be responsible for causing colitis. People with bowel disease are strongly suggested to stay away from gums and thickeners in order to avoid indigestion.
  6. Soy: Soy possesses protein inhibitors. It is an enzyme that restricts digestion. The carbohydrate content of soy is not recognized by the GI system. This leads to bloating, cramps and gas.
  7. Nightshade vegetables: Vegetables such as potato, bell pepper and tomatoes contain a compound called solanine. The latter is known to be responsible for indigestion. People with a compromised GI should not consume these vegetables at all.
  8. Red Dye: Many fast food items contain a red dye which is known to decrease the production of energy, disturb nerve signaling and is an inflammatory agent.
  9. Sweeteners: Fake sweeteners show GI symptoms such as bloating and gas. Replacing this with sugar is not at all a good idea since it causes indigestion over a period of time.
  10. Legumes and beans: Legumes and beans contain compounds called saponins and lectins respectively. They are a major cause of a leaky gut and inflammation.

If the pain was sudden and severe then it could be the stones (kidney) If pain is low grade and constant could be due to colon, maybe mild constipation.

No, you may get a bad taste in the mouth or have loose stools for a few days due to the antibiotics, but the therapy will not affect the Crohn’s disease.

I am suffering from wheat allergy from 5 years. I know about allergy from 2 years. I eat food gluten free food from 2 years. But from some days my situation is critically. I am very ill. I have do not hunger. My stomach all time water sound. My stomach all time full. But I do not eat food. Only one glass milk whole day. My all stomach all time pain.

I am assuming you are a case of coeliac disease Please stop all wheat completely, that means no bread, no noodles, no biscuits, no pasta, nothing made with wheat, or maida. No samosa, no puff etc, even many soya snacks on the market all have wheat in them. Lots of restaurants put atta (wheat flour) in dal to thicken it. Some chocolates and sweets also have wheat flour in them as a thickening agent. Stop milk, stop oats, no bournvita or any such malt drinks (some malt comes from wheat) You can have curd instead You can have rice, Dal, jowar, bajra, eggs, meat etc But do not eat anything that has wheat flour (atta- maida- Rava) If you follow a strict wheat free diet you will see benefit after 6 months.

The tablets prescribed to you are good, continue them as advised In some cases may have to take medicines for a few months before the medicines are gradually reduced Try out yoga and exercise (not ab exercise) as they hep these symptoms if done on an empty stomach. Yes it is curable, may come back occasionally but can get treated again Avoid very spicy food, normal spicing for taste is okay Avoid oily foods and keep a gap of 3 hrs between dinner and sleep time.

I am 40 years old with apparently no disease. I have allergic cough but the doctor diagnosed it as GERD and I took raciper plus for 5 months. On stopping the medicine I had nausea and I was irritable with lack of concentration. Another doctor then prescribed me neopride 25 mg and mirtaz 14 mg which I took for 8 months. Now I stopped taking these but again I am having a feeling of nausea, dry mouth and irritability. All these symptoms are relieved by neopride but I don't want to take it. Please suggest what should I do for relief and how long will it take to cure.

MD-General Medicine, D.M, Gastroenterology & Hepatology

Continue the raciper and neopride for a month, then stop neopride and continue raciper Take raciper in the morning 30 min before breakfast for best results If you are not satisfied with your motions please also take isphagul 2 tablespoons with one large glass of water at night daily for at least two months Keep a gap of at lease 2-3 hrs between dinner and sleep Eat slightly smaller meals, and maybe more frequently. Do not sleep on your right side at night.

GERD can be controlled and cured with help of medicines but it also requires lifestyle changes Avoid oily and very spicy foods. Oily foods even if not spicy can cause GERD Eat slightly smaller meals but more frequent so you don’t loose weight Keep a gap of at least 2-3 hours between dinner and going to bed. Continue whatever medicines have been prescribed and do not stop unless you’ve been advised to stop. Suddenly stopping medicine could again increase the GERD Ideally the medicines are stopped very gradually.
