Rotavirus is an infection that causes diarrhea. Initial symptoms are a fever and vomiting, followed by three to seven days of watery diarrhea. The infection can cause abdominal pain as well.
HOW IS ROTAVIRUS DIAGNOSED?
Diagnosis of Rotavirus is done by a paediatrician who observes these symptoms and also does stool and blood tests to check for the virus.
HOW IS ROTAVIRUS TREATED?
Ideally, oral rehydration therapy is provided to such kids immediately. Besides this, for toddlers diet restrictions are imposed and soft foods like rice and potatoes are suggested. Breastfeeding is encouraged because the milk is easily digested. In rare cases, intravenous therapy or nasogastric intubation is needed. Delayed treatment can lead to risks of fatality.
